For more years than I care to remember, I have been proud in the knowledge that our little Northernsoul community have saved, or at least cherished some of the abandoned and forgotten American Soul tracks. We all know the story of black soul artists coming over to perform for or little clique and being blown away at the response this side of the pond due to the fact that they are more often than not obscure and forgotten back home.

Beach music, I must confess to not knowing very much about this subject but every now and again I find out that one of our adopted US tracks isn't the forgotten and abandoned track as we often assume, some of them enjoy a lease of life as part of the US Beach Scene, if that's the right terminology?

My first ever ignorant fumble into Beach Music was courtesy of The Futures Party Time Man.

I was mindlessly Youtubing music, as you do and came across the Beach boys playing Papa Oom-Mow-Mow, can any one throw any light onto Beach music for me please, how many cross pollinating tracks are there and what size of following and who by is beach Music?

Is it any thing like the UK Northernsoul Scene?

its a scene in America as far as i am aware mostly around the the carolinas. They revere a lot of the same music we do but a lot of the music seems to be new records made in the style of the drifters et al, My rugby club went on tour to America in the late ninties and went to a beach music night with a live band they said it was a cross between "animal house and lemon popsicle /porkies" . Their words not mine but they said they had a great time.

When I was watching live bands in the mid-60's it seemed that every one that hadn't made the charts was doing either Soul/R&B covers or Surf covers (Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Surfaris etc. etc).

Keith Moon of the Who was a big Surf fan and I am sure he actually sat in as drummer at a Beach Boys gig in the U.K.

One of the VERY VERY best bands I remember from that era was called Tony Rivers & the Castaways. The name will tell you which category they fitted into.

They hailed from East London of all places!!

Their recorded stuff never seemed to live up to their live performances - but below is a little taster.

I think Beach Music and surf Music are two very separate things.

Surf music is sixties harmonizing made popular by The Beach Boys.

Beach Music I think is more RnB influenced slower Rock with a dance a little like a slower Jitterbug called the Shag?

That's about as much as I know apart from us sharing some of the tracks that have entered into our Northernsoul Culture.

My reference to The Beach Boys was due to shared tracks Papa oow mow mow done by played at The Casino by The Rivingtons and The Sharonattes?

Again this information is second hand from American guys i have spoken to. Beach Music is so called as its a type of sound that brings back memories of American holiday camps like in Dirty Dancing and holiday sites such as fort Sumptar in the movie Shag because most of these places were on the coast the genre became known as beach music to the fans.

Imber Boy is right about the dancing being partner influenced and like slow jive/Ceroc in style.

I was also told that it was called beach music 'cause it was happy.

Hi Simon

I have a friend in the States who I met on a NS site about 10 years ago. He was brought up on the beach music scene in South Carolina, and there are a lot of crossover tracks. He's been over here to visit a couple of times and came to the 100 Club and Bisley, and was amazed when he heard some tunes that are played in both scenes. Their dancing (shagging!) is very different in they dance in couples, but the really good dancers are great to watch.

And see below a top 100 list of beach tunes, but you have to bear in mind that these are a bit like a Kev Roberts northern top 100, in that they've been played for donkey's years and certainly won't be cutting edge. Beach afficionados seem to be a little more, ahem, open to embracing current soul tunes than a lot of folks in this country.

Yeah it's a different type of music - Tony Rivers & The Castaways played west coast harmony pop - Beach Music really doesn't have that many similarities with Northern Soul apart from the fact they dance to SOME old r&b records

Pete I recon there are a few tracks that cross over but the scene seams very familiar:

Predominately white people, the cloths look nigh on the same with the smart casual look, and take away the couples and the dancing looks closer to ors than any thing I have seen?

Going back to the music, it sounds like a typical RnB room to my un trained ear?

I've got loads of Beach stuff, Simon.

The UK scene has been playing their stuff since the early 80's.

Such 45's as the Fantastic Shakers massive 'Northern' track "Biggest Mistake" and Debby Dobbins "Glad I Found You" were big 'made for the market' Beach tunes.

More recently General Johnson's Surfside hit "Bless Your Heart" also found Northern acclaim.

Embers "Watch out Girl" is a Beach indemander along with pretty much everything by Willie Tee and the Tams (Don't you recall "There Aint Nothing Like Shagging" being a UK hit a few years ago?).

Theres a HUGE number of CD compilations with tracks suited to both scenes (some issued by Kev Roberts - and pretty good too!).

I've lived in North Carolina twice in the early 90's and early 00's, plus I've visited nearly every year for decades. If you want to compare the Northern Scene and the Beach Music Scene then the biggest similarities are:-

- It's all about the tempo / beat, that's why records from different sources were popular on both scenes.

- They bootleg everything!

- They make 'tailor made' tracks.

- The majority of people are over 50.

- There are lots of record collectors on both scenes.

- They are both very passionate about their music.

It's called Beach Music because it started on the (Myrtle) beach on the NC coastline. Nowadays it's all CDs. Having been around both scenes I think they are very similar, Cheers, Ady

Back in 2005 RealSide Records scored in one of Beach Charts with several artists.Jacqui Williams, Leonie Parker and ex Drifter Roy Hemmings all got regular plays.the BIG track was Hold on to the Blues by Lonne Givens.

Heres the story...

Looking for a new track for RealSide to release I heard Rob Hurcombe play the tune at a soul night in Worcester.It sounded great and and via the writer Walter Thomas we contacted Lonne and licensed it for release.A promo cdr was sent to Kev Roberts who played it on his radio show which was also broadcast in the Carolinas. A deejay in the Carolinas lifted the track and started playing it and then it just exploded on the Beach Scene.It spent over 75 weeks in the Beach Charts mostly at Number One or in the top 5 and iiiwas voted the Number One Beach Record for the year 2005.

How i s that for selling coals to Newcasltle or in this case selling Soul to Mytle Beach?

Chicago based Lonne is now an established artist on the Beach Scene having recently scored another no 1 hit with Hey Mr Deejay (on another label) .Writer Walter Thomas' version was released on a very limited promo on RealSide and also got plays.

Our recent Angel Rissoff release was also very popular on the Beach Scene and our next release will be a Beach number one from Rhonda McDaniel.More info on that one soon.

I've lived in North Carolina twice in the early 90's and early 00's, plus I've visited nearly every year for decades. If you want to compare the Northern Scene and the Beach Music Scene then the biggest similarities are:-

- It's all about the tempo / beat, that's why records from different sources were popular on both scenes.

- They bootleg everything!

- They make 'tailor made' tracks.

- The majority of people are over 50.

- There are lots of record collectors on both scenes.

- They are both very passionate about their music.

It's called Beach Music because it started on the (Myrtle) beach on the NC coastline. Nowadays it's all CDs. Having been around both scenes I think they are very similar, Cheers, Ady

I was trawling through the vinyl at Tower Records in Los Angeles whilst on holiday back in 1983 and came across two albums;

The Beat Of The Beach from Arista and Endless Beach on Epic.

The Arista one included Right Here In The Palm Of My Hand- Garnett Mimms,Only Love Can Mend A Broken Heart-General Johnson, Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl-Patti and the Emblems as well as well known tracks by the Purify's, Trammp's, O'Jay.s,Clifford Curry,The Van Dykes and Shirley and the Shirelles.

Endless Beach included- If You Don't Want My Love and Who Could Ever Believe It-by Robert John, Everybody Loves A Good Time,We're Gonna Get Married and Mama Didn't Know-by Major Lance, We're Acting Like Lover's by The Spellbinders,And You Know It and You Ought To Be Having Fun by The Tower Of Power,Nevertheless and I'm Just A Man By Billy Butler, People and The Love That You're Looking For by The Tyme's amongst others.

I seem to recall buying Gone Fishin' by General Johnson/Chairmen on US when first issued but cannot recall the year, but these two albums were my first real introduction to Beach Music.
