Pete S Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 PETER MY LOVELY MATE, I think it is time for another chat...... Oops. Er, sorry Sandi, must go, speak another time yeah
Ian Parker Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) IAN hmmm, not had any trouble at a niter but i remember being picked on by two 'blockheads' ??? on Crewe station, dec '79 (waiting for train change) with caveman Pete and a couple of other grantham lads. before we'd had chance to either stand and fight or leg it, a woman from further down the platform walked up and gave the trouble makers a right ear bashing . I also remember St Ives around the same time, some trouble kicking off on the dancefloor, a couple of brothers' local to me (mentioning no names ) taking on quite a few geezers and dropping em one at a time as they came at them. strangely enough a few yrs later i worked as an hgv driver with one of the bouncers from there and he remembered that occasion too. Guest rod Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 rod do you remember the night at the wheatsheaf when the twat with the volvo bashed the door on your wee ford escort (yes the one wi all the wee red and yellow dots where you had rubbed it down for a respray that never happened) and his volvo looked worse the wear when we went outside and sorted it and his mates out, think the solicitors onions and pugh dealt out some retribution by way of a tyre iron and a crooklock, happy days matey. ... & the the time those 2 HUGE skinheads come down causin' shit. Seem to remember you banging him about 6 times as he strode towards you & then smackin' him streight across the teeth at full pelt with a bar stool & him just shakin his head a couple of times, lookin at you with that "Wanker" look in his eyes & still walkin' toward you before the whole club jumped on them, evicting em "Not tonight mate" style ha ha. Oh that was mad.
Ian Parker Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 weights?....were you pumping iron at the same time as dancin ? I do pump a bit of iron , but not when im dancing!
Blunny Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 (edited) Timmy Toad, l never attended this nighter, and am appauled to learn that a PUNK record was played at a soul venue. I've been trying now for about 5 years to be heard by mainly promoters to start the what should be a natural progression and "evolution" of what is truely Soulful, why does it have to be that all things "Soulful" are oldies???? I've been on this Scene for 38 years, l love all soul music, Mickey Moonshine being my all time favorite, great classic oldie, The Epitome Of Sound, Purple Haze,Baby Boy, Don Thomas, Chuck Jackson, Walter Jackson, Baby Washington, the list is endless, all oldies all great tracks and all liked by me. Yet unlike some l have moved with the times never once forgetting where my roots are, l appreciate every facet of the soul scene where it's origins begin, where they progress and diversify, and yet still we come to a dead end as regards "Oldies ,Newies,Modern"........(70's 80's 90's) and no mans land, so if there are these main catagories, does that mean 70's 80's and 90's dont exist ?.....l say that because when coming face to face with die hard "OLDIES SOULIES" they are only too ready to slag off "MODERN", please explain to me why some of these class anything that is soulful dating post 60's is to them "DISCO CRAP", l really need to know this because to be very honest l am rapidly losing the will to live. I support as many local and national venues as little old me can humanly manage, and week after week get the same old biased, unfounded negative comments. So as l have already mentioned just a few "OLDIES Artists" Thought l'd mention just a few more with a bit of zing behind em................................... Aretha Franklin "Integrity" 1986 ! Drizabone "Pressure" 1994 ! D.J.Genesis "Tribute To Betty" !!!!!!!! 2005 !!!! Skip Mahoney "Janice" !!!! 1980. Keni Burke "Let Somebody Love You" !!! 1981. Randy Brown " Always In The Mood" !!!! 1978. Johnny Bristol " Love No Longer Has A Hold On You " !!!! 1980 Greg Perry "It Takes Heart" !!!!1982. Flaming Emeralds "Have Some Everybody" !!!! 1977. Micheal Proctor " Love Dont Live " !!! 1996. Joi Cardwell " Let It Go " !!! 2000. Ron Hall & The Mutha Funkaz " The Way You Love Me " !!!! 2005. All the above have been played in almost every venue that l have attended over the years at one point or another, So what makes these suitable to be played in the "OLDIES" rooms when others are dismissed and labeled "KRAPP" !!!!!!!!!!!!........l think this is what most intelligent people would consider to be a hypocritical. Well l and Gilly do for starters. So you tell me what are oldies ??, because the most popular negative comment about modern is " if it aint 60's it's modern", which also begs the question " where does cross-over fit in ? ". Why on earth can it just be" Simply Soul Music " because thats what it is. "Simple Dot Com". As for a Punk record being played well , maybe l should shave my head, wear a pair of cut off Levi's, Boot's and braces, approach a D.J. with a "Modern " record l want playing and demand the D.J. comply...............Fookin Hell l wish l'd of read this before going to lifeline, then maybe Cliff Steele would of played the record l requested (He said he would, was gonna make it his last one), Wee "Try Me". Wee Try Me !!!!!!!! we fookin do. Sandi and Gilly said ditto. That is a really great post Sandi. But, take me back 30 years (I know some of them tracks weren't around then) and I would have wholeheartedly disagreed with you. However, having been off the scene for quite a while and then coming back onto it, I've realised that some of my old prejudices were exactly that, prejudice. Don't get me wrong, "oldies" are still my first love, but with having kids that love the "crossover/modern" stuff and actually listening to it for a change, I have found I actually can move my feet to it and enjoy doing so. Back to the post point though, I always had trouble at niters. Not being one to indulge in any 'energy' products (yes, there was one or two of us), I always fell asleep around 5 o'clock. Always ended up full of bruises from people kicking and stepping on me. More fool me for falling asleep on the dance floor I guess Edited July 2, 2009 by Blunny
Guest Brett F Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Early 80's (82/83 ?) at Samanthas Sheffield, Searling and co were playing there was a set to between local Sheff Utd boys and i think Middlesborough or Darlington lads, i remember because i was just a fledgling boy at SUFC, it all blew over and the night continued. Another time i remember around the same time being outside Winter Gdns Cleethorpes when the same outfit Darlington/ Middlesborough had a slight ruck outside in the carpark as i was queing to get in (was on Sean Hampsey's coach from Sheffield, think i was about 18). I remember these lads because they dressed in the then casual terrace culture that i grew up with. Don't want to go on, but i do remember at Prestatyn about 5 years back , very early morning after the opening nighter i saw a lad kick hell out of another outside a chalet as i was walking back to mine.very surreal, thought they were larking about until he started to kick his head............ Lastly around 88 at Samanthas again for a nighter a local feud (football related) erupted bottles etc, oh happy days Edited July 3, 2009 by Brett F
Guest Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Is that Peter Sutcliffe??? - just checking The Mum of my mate Simon from years ago from Bradford was a teacher - so was Sonia Sutcliffe. Sonia and Peter came round for dinner a few times and did the washing up in the kitchen - cleaning all the big utensils like kitchen knives My mate Simon's other claim to fame was that he once (regrettably) opened a door for Enoch Powell. Cheers Richard sonia suttcliffe taught my brother in law here in bradford. will check but think it was thornton school!

Guest welshruss Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Dont ask me the year because i cant remember it (brain cells not what they used to be). Any one remember the small corridor from the Casino balcony to "M"s............. was sitting in there one night with Caddy and Nige from Hollywell .Noticed we were being surrounded by some pretty hefty looking black guys.We were only 16 or 17 at the time and started to get a bit worried,so we decided to act as if they wernt there and carried on (nervously) talking. Then suddenly all the bouncers ran into the corridor, blocked off all the doors, said to us 3 "sit down, keep your mouths shut" and started to kick the holy shit out of all the black guys.It was pretty scary stuff to witness, and we were just hoping they didnt turn on us. When it was all over the bouncers calmly left the scene, and one said to us "there you go lads,no more bother tonite eh" as if it was us that started it ! Not sure if any one else was there, but if you were you wouldnt forget.
Chalky Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I haven't read all the topic but has the story of when the Wigan Rugby League Club went to the Casino and got a kicking been mentioned? Think it was Ady C that told it best.

Hi I wrote an early piece in this thread about an issue about bringing ALL nighter essentials so all you soulsters could stay awake all night? well it was a living these are the geezers that I was talking about, they used to hang around that pass-way but mainly used to hustle the kids in the piss pool (gents) as I say it was heavy and our actions back were far to heavy for them?, the people that you are on about were mainly from Wolves as i have lived here for 30 years now,its amazing what a great bunch of blokes they turned out to be, i don't want to name any one on this sight but nearly all of the became champions in various sports such as boxing karate and judo, and were to become UK champions and in 1 case went to the Olympics and one a bronze medal that's if its the same blokes i am talking about 74 to 76 ish, there is one thing coming from London area you are bought up in anticipation there's going to be a bundle on the dance floor, DAVE KIL
Guest welshruss Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 No mate he didnt have a Volvo.........we all used to get around on scooters in those days.............. Now theres another tale,me, Caddy,Coxy,Timmy S Jones,Ali and a couple of girls from Blacon having a running street battle with the local greesers......... happy days and all before bunking the train to Wigan.

macca Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Caught this a bit late. There was a time in 1978 when the Fleet All-Nighters in Peterborough became plagued with local oiks that would converge at opening time to hassle people queuing up. One night some lads from Nottingham I think, I can remember an Asian guy (or of Asian extraction) being singled out for taunts & general abuse. The oiks took on more than they'd bargained for that night 'cos he & his mates piled back outside and took the war back to the oiks, who got a right royal kicking. The only problem was that word spread and at the next nighter there were loads of them looking for 'the paki & his buddies'. I can't really remember what happened after that, cos I was picked up by Mick Cooper on a roundabout nearby. I think we spent about an hour driving around in circles, listening to tapes & 'putting the world to right', peeved that we were missing the first set of whoever was jocking that night. We were very keen and very young...

Tezz Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 First nite at wigan, bouncers warned us of probs as hand bags, personal property etc had been nicked. Trouble kickin off but that set the tone for a lot of oldies at the nite and a lot who left the scene for many years... I only went for a cou[ple of years now and then after that...
Guest madkev Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 at yates is was a load of rugby club knobheads, starting on dennie , dennie told em you wouldnt be starting if my mate jack was here, they said where is he , and dennie said in the car, they said go get him then to which dennie went to the car , got his jack out of the boot and returned and started beating the dum shits with it, never seen a car park full of meatheads clear so fast but funny as f*** , really miss dennie always good for a laugh if anyone sees him in glouster tell him to start getting his arse out again == kev

Ion T Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Did anyone go the all-niter in Keighley in the mid - 80's when the windows were bricked and a load of idiots tried to storm the building? There was a huge ruck at the door. I remember that niter all too well. I travelled up in a car with Guy Hennigan and Dean Anderson. We arrived at the venue late in the early hours and as we approached we were excited to see what looked like an enthusiastic crowd trying to get into the venue. However, as we drew up we realised the crowd were in fact a mob of locals trying to storm the doors having already set about the local plod. We were trying to come up with a stealthy exit strategy when the whole racist mob turned in unison, looking at our car, and the cry went up 'Get the '******' (Dean shares Marvin Gaye's good looks, if not singing ability!). Cue reversing down the hill @ 50 mph and driving around for an hour or so before we got in. When we did get in, it was pleasing to see that Pat Brady had slapped a couple of them when they had got too near to his tunes, but then the bricks started flying in which is not particularly relaxing when you are on the wrong end of a good night's worth. The way back was even worse, massive blizzard, car stuck in drift for hours, first pick up truck got stuck in snow and when eventually rescued the sweat from my hand had frozen! All in all, I can happily wait for the reactivation of that night. All best Ion PS I think I may have been one of the 'mods' set about at Leicester Oddfellows - the good old days eh!

From memory sure he said Pete Wid came from under the table as it kicked off and as he came up from under the table stuck the nut on one of 'em. Pet's a close pal of mine and yes he was involved in that with Randy. He tells the story brilliantly although it translates rather differently than the 'rugby guys got a good kicking' in fact Pete says it was notable as to how many people bottled it apart from him RC and a few others!
ianr Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 got jumped walkin from wigan station to the casino by a load of blokes who had just come out the pub , then when we got outside the casino it was kickin off with the soulies and punks who had just came out from an earlier function, so on the whole a good nite That would be the night the Sex Pistols played before allnighter. Hell on outside.
