Trouble At Niters

Gigs

Recommended Posts

Have you ever been to an all-nighter and a fight or any trouble broken out? I have only ever had one experience, not directly involved myself but........about 77-78 I was at the K.G.B. club in Sheffield

and 3-4 skinheads came in,boots, braces and all.

All was well until around 4.30a.m. when the dancefloor seemed to be thinning out a bit,and two of these guys were dancing around mockingly with traffic cones on their heads, nothing was said or done until

a soulie was in the middle of launching himself into a spin and dropping straight down into the splits, where one of these traffic cone wearing idiots ran over and kicked him in the face, result was immeadiatley being surrounded by around 20-30 angry soul fans, who escorted them bodily out of the club.

It certainly livend up the rest of the niter, talk about cameraderie it was great to see everyone watching out for everyone else.............................anyone else got a story ? would love to hear it.

got jumped walkin from wigan station to the casino by a load of blokes who had just come out the pub:wanker: , then when we got outside the casino it was kickin off with the soulies and punks who had just came out from an earlier function, so on the whole a good nite:thumbup:

Simular story to the above, walking up from the train station in Wigan, walked passed a few pubs on the way to the Casino, punks following, draged into the doorway of a shop, the doorways were like corridors, took a beating and told to stay away as they want the Casino for their punk nights,

Outside the Casino, fights between the punks and soulies, well more like chasing each other up and down Station Rd. Still went back week after week

On the way to a nighter at the Casino, me & a mate Dave H got jumped outside the corner entrance to Woolies, moments before this Dave had bought a hamburger complete with onions and tomato sauce.

As the onslaught started Dave immediately put his hand on his head to protect himself, complete with burger :D. It didn't half mess up his hair! meanwhile i was curled up in a ball in a fire escape doorway waiting for them to stop kicking/punching mewhistling

I was in the queue one night for the Oddfellows in Leicester, and a group of guys had a go at a few Mods on the opposite side of the raod. About 50 of the queue tore over and chased the attackers off...and I got nearer the front of the queue

Does anyone remember standing outside Wigan when a load of locals walked down the road obviously hellbent on starting a fight, I must have had about 10 bags thrown at my feet saying look after me bag, I've really never seen anything like it but believe me the locals soon backed off  .

not so much at the nighter, but on the way, think ive posted this story before, we used to travel from york on the train and change at manchester, there was about an hours delay so we used to go in a pub called the rowntree bar, one of the lads who used to go with us was BILLY [WHIZZ] JOLLANS R.I.P, anyway those of you who remember billy will also know he liked a drink or two and could be a right pain when pissed, so this night we go into the rowntree bar, now if memory serves me right there was a bar at the front but to get to the toilets you had to go through the back bar wich was sort of a pool room, very dodgy usually full of locals mostly coloured guys, some very peculiar smelling smoke in that back room, well it was for a seventeen year old fresh faced kid who`d only been as far as bridlington for family hols before then. Billy pissed out of his head decides he wants to go to the toilet, comes back, goes to the bar, orders his drink, then starts looking for his wallet, "SOMEONES NICKED MY F*CKIN WALLET" head in hands i look up only to see him opening the door to the back room. "OI WICH ONE OF YOU B**CK B**TARDS HAS NICKED MY WALLET" believe you me, i never considered myself a sprinter, but that night HUSSAIN BOLT had nowt on me, VAULTED the turnstiles back onto the platform in the station n hid in the toilets. thought billy must have been killed. sat in the casino about 2am in falls billy "WHERE THE F*CK DID YOU LOT GO:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Is that Peter Sutcliffe??? - just checking

The Mum of my mate Simon from years ago from Bradford was a teacher - so was Sonia Sutcliffe.

Sonia and Peter came round for dinner a few times and did the washing up in the kitchen - cleaning all the big utensils like kitchen knives

My mate Simon's other claim to fame was that he once (regrettably) opened a door for Enoch Powell.

Cheers

Rowntrees was my local from 1970,there were some interesting people that used to drink in there,Bouncers,Doormen,Boxers,Probably the best afternoon in there was on a Derby day when a bunch of Irish reds started to sing ira songs, not realising that the brother of one of the locals had just been shipped back from N.I badly injured!!!!!!!!

Or when a team of us went to a nf meeting in The Mitre round the corner, three white lads, three black lads, one Sri Lankan, two gay, they couldn't cope with us.Hey ho your only young once!!!!

EARLY DAYS AT THE CASINO AND 02.00AM START, ERALY SESSION WAS HEAVY ROCK AND SOME OF THE LOCAL GREASERS USED TO REGULARY COME INTO THE EMPRESS CAFE NEXT DOOR AND TRY AND GIVE IT THE BIG ONE. WELL ALL OF THEM WERE EITHER PISSED OR STONED & AND NEARLY ALL THE SOULIES WERE WIZZING THEIR TITS OFF THERE WAS ALWAYS ONLY ONE WINNER. IN THEM DAYS THE ONLY SOULIES I SAW GETTING TURNED OVER WERE THE ONES WHO GOT ROLLED BY THEIR OWN FOR THEIR PILLS + POWDER.

boxing.gif To be honest I can only really talk about the 7ts with great authority, I did witness a cat fight at Wigan in 75sh apart from that no, however on a personal level that is on a more seeder side of Northern Soul AL_NIGHTERS as an EX Drug dealer supplier of Amphet I came across some of the more heavy allnighter people who were all to pleased to roll you for all the efforts that I was bringing what the kids wanted, as such I have 2 stories that are relevant as if it was not for the fact we were armed the situation would of got really heavy in the CASINO (men's bog) the outcome was never to be repeated and in fact much improved this underworld position love it or loath it drugs were a integral part of all night soul at Wigan Casino, but most punters did not have a clue relay how there £10 bag of speed got there?. ph34r.gif DAVE THE DRUG

HONEST I THINK THEY GAVE HIM ONE TO PLAY LOL

THAT SIGNALLED THE START OF TROUBLE

Timmy Toad, l never attended this nighter, and am appauled to learn that a PUNK record was played at a soul venue.

I've been trying now for about 5 years to be heard by mainly promoters to start the what should be a natural progression and "evolution" of what is truely Soulful, why does it have to be that all things "Soulful" are oldies????

I've been on this Scene for 38 years, l love all soul music, Mickey Moonshine being my all time favorite, great classic oldie, The Epitome Of Sound, Purple Haze,Baby Boy, Don Thomas, Chuck Jackson, Walter Jackson, Baby Washington, the list is endless, all oldies all great tracks and all liked by me.

Yet unlike some l have moved with the times never once forgetting where my roots are, l appreciate every facet of the soul scene where it's origins begin, where they progress and diversify, and yet still we come to a dead end as regards "Oldies ,Newies,Modern"........(70's 80's 90's) and no mans land, so if there are these main catagories, does that mean 70's 80's and 90's dont exist ?.....l say that because when coming face to face with die hard "OLDIES SOULIES" they are only too ready to slag off "MODERN", please explain to me why some of these class anything that is soulful dating post 60's is to them "DISCO CRAP", l really need to know this because to be very honest l am rapidly losing the will to live.

I support as many local and national venues as little old me can humanly manage, and week after week get the same old biased, unfounded negative comments.

So as l have already mentioned just a few "OLDIES Artists" Thought l'd mention just a few more with a bit of zing behind em...................................

Aretha Franklin "Integrity" 1986 !

Drizabone "Pressure" 1994 !

D.J.Genesis "Tribute To Betty" !!!!!!!! 2005 !!!!

Skip Mahoney "Janice" !!!! 1980.

Keni Burke "Let Somebody Love You" !!! 1981.

Randy Brown " Always In The Mood" !!!! 1978.

Johnny Bristol " Love No Longer Has A Hold On You " !!!! 1980

Greg Perry "It Takes Heart" !!!!1982.

Flaming Emeralds "Have Some Everybody" !!!! 1977.

Micheal Proctor " Love Dont Live " !!! 1996.

Joi Cardwell " Let It Go " !!! 2000.

Ron Hall & The Mutha Funkaz " The Way You Love Me " !!!! 2005.

All the above have been played in almost every venue that l have attended over the years at one point or another, So what makes these suitable to be played in the "OLDIES" rooms when others are dismissed and labeled "KRAPP" !!!!!!!!!!!!........l think this is what most intelligent people would consider to be a hypocritical.

Well l and Gilly do for starters.

So you tell me what are oldies ??, because the most popular negative comment about modern is " if it aint 60's it's modern", which also begs the question " where does cross-over fit in ? ".

Why on earth can it just be" Simply Soul Music " because thats what it is. "Simple Dot Com".

As for a Punk record being played well , maybe l should shave my head, wear a pair of cut off Levi's, Boot's and braces, approach a D.J. with a "Modern " record l want playing and demand the D.J. comply...............Fookin Hell l wish l'd of read this before going to lifeline, then maybe Cliff Steele would of played the record l requested (He said he would, was gonna make it his last one), Wee "Try Me".

Wee Try Me !!!!!!!! we fookin do.

Sandi and Gilly said ditto.

Sandi it's very very simple - the reason people say that is because the records don't sound like the original music that they got into, i.e. 60's uptempo dancers, not everyone wants to "progress", they're happy with that 60's sound and that's what they go to listen to - there's plenty of outlets for the other stuff. If I went to a Northern venue playing the records you listed, I'd never go again. Hello Goodyears.

There was a discussion on here a few years back, talking about punks attacking soulies near Wigan Station.

Johnny One Trout, posted my fave line ever, saying about a load who got together at crewe, and planned to get their retaliation in first.

He described the soulies as being

Hepped up on goof balls.

Paints a picture, I think you'll agree.
