I bought quite an expensive acetate on ebay last night, it was wrongly titled 'Jingle jangle' but I think it's actually called 'The Tingle' and it's so blatantly obvious that it's a Detroit production from around 1965-66, in my opinion Mike Terry's distinctive sax can plainly be heard and you only have to listen to the drum fills to realise it's the same guy who played on many of Popcorn Wylie's productions (Uriel Jones maybe?) - the vocalist is a kid and I reckon there's a good chance of it being Carl Carlton. Anyway, vocals aside, the backing track is a monster and could do some real damage on the dancefloors. If any of you think you can shed any light on it, please send me your email address and I'll send you a recording of it. Thanks.

No, this is way way better than that one. Completely different track.

Hang on I'll see if I can a clip up.

Pete,

Was watching this (as were a few others I'll bet), you're right about the backing track but the vocal was (is) atrocious. I'd put my money on a Detroit production too. It sounded (s) unfinished to me, almost like a demo. The production was certainly poor which in my opoinion would rule out any Wylie/Hestor connection. (Unless it was actually unfinished). Nice sound though and if the vocal had been better it may have been winging it's way to my place as opposed to Wombourne.

Nice buy either way.

Whatchoo talkin bout Dave, the production is stonking, listen to the bass!

That was just it fo me. To me it's all bass. Also sounded 'muffled'. Great potential as a backing track I agree, but I couldn't decide whether it was male/female or duet either at first. Little Carl Carlton is a fair shout but I'd also not rule out someone like the L'il Soul Brothers or the like. I quite liked it and did so on first hearing though.

I actually liked the vocal as well, I'm just thinking of it from the point of what it would sound like out loud, not on my pc or my stereo...I wouldn't pay out for sommat like that usually but it's got some big potential. I compared it to Nothing Sweeter Than Love's B side and I think it's him. Anyway I just got offered almost 2 months rent money for it so it wasn't money wasted

Pete,

After listening to it it does sound very similar to "Nothing Sweeter", but to me the production sounds very much like the Dave Hamilton stuff. Only listened to it at work on my mobile, so will have a proper listen when I get home.

In a strange way listening to this took me back to the Casino when Richard first played Eddie Holman "where I'm not wanted"

I like it and i think your right, it would sound fantastic up loud in somewhere big like the king hall.

Had it on my watch list as well but couldn`t see myself paying any sort of big money for it as condition and the dull lyrics really left sth to be desired. Sax sounds Detoit but so have others. If it would by Mike Terry it would be maybe more dominating the melody though. However, maybe you still invested better in comparison to the (un)lucky buyer of that Sammy Lee "acetate"....

I honestly loved it first time I heard it and my actual bid was double what I got it for - it sounds really brilliant through my speakers (sounds very tinny on my other computer. It's definitely Mike Terry, I'd bet every record I've got on it.

I was watching it too

IMHO its an almost record that could have been fantastic but didnt quite make it (unless there's another take knocking about)

Had a conversation with someone who really does know about these things and they say it is almost certainly an unissued Popcorn Wylie production.

No mate I knocked the scan up on the computer - I got a carvers cut of it as the original is not in my hands anymore.

That looks briliant Pete - very convincing! thumbsup.gif

Wouldn't mind hearing it if you don't mind sending me a PM of it too please :D

Cheers

Think maybe if I change the ink to black and make the star smaller...

Just get rid of the star Pete.... leave the ink colour.... then quite passable....

The star looks like it's "floating" which kinda gives it away....

I'll do another sound clip but it's gonna be a short one, I'm not going to jeopardise the sale of the original - send me your email address if you want one.

Just to update this story: I played the record to Steve Calloway and Chalky. First thing Steve said was "that's Uriel Jones" (the drummer, obviously) and I said that's exactly what I thought, he said yeah thats his signature 'fill', and he was one of my closest friends. So thats that bit sorted. They both thought it was probably (some of) the Funk Brothers playing on it. Meanwhile JM and apparently Keb both reckoned it was awesome and that nice JM bloke sold it for me to a very big name DJ, won't say how much for but it's the second most I've ever got for a record (the most was £2500) so I guess that'll be taking off very soon. JM and keb also think it's a girl singing, not a boy.

When I cleaned it up it sounded incredible, especially the break towards the end.

I cut one acetate, for myself. So that's that really.

Hi Pete

Gave this a listen last night and it was bugging me that it reminded me of something??

Not that i'm suggesting any connection between the two apart from maybe DETROIT

Anyway it finally came to me after a few more listens....

, - ,Edward Hamilton - Call Me.mp3 -

Think there probably is a connection cos it's the same people playing on it by the sounds of it - but I'm not getting any connection to it sound-wise though..

exactly. I am amazed to learn that a "big name DJ" pays more than 2500 UKP for what is a very cool backing tracking with lyrics so poor they make even James Duncan `s 3 little pigs sound like the cream of the lyrical crop. Also makes you wonder why the new owner did not decide to buy it at 500 USD plus when it was on ebay with a soundfile when most of us decided to leave it. More then 2500 UKP is more then 8 times as much, so bearing that in mind it was indeed obviously a very good find..

If you read what I said, I actually said 2500 was the most I ever got for a record, I didn't say it was for this record.

Not everyone is on Ebay, so thats another of your points answered.

And thirdly, the most important thing, and it's the point you've totally overlooked - it's one of the most perfect Northern Soul records you'll ever hear, including the vocal.

p.s. no need to put "big name dj" in brackets as if you think I'm lying. You wait to see who plays it out.

Pete, to put something in brackets is not indicating a lie it is simply indicating a quote...

A Big name DJ (no brackets used now as I already indicated my quoting once before..) I would imagine is also one of the guys and gals who are on top of the game. Therefore I would imagine they should indeed have an eye on almost every possible source incl. ebay for new stuff. IMO. So thats reflecting my thoughts on your point made.

If not it seems as if its just another case of "you are only as good as your main dealer is..." That goes to explain why I couldn`t understand that a big name DJ wasn`t going to buy it off ebay when it was there for over a week for everyone to see and hear.

And thirdly, the most important thing indeed, its simply not a very good record IMO. And far far from being the most perfect Northern Soul record ever...I mean, come on..really.

All only IMO and no need to feel offended at all. Good luck with it to whoever bought it. Seriously.

I love the vocals personally, they got a kind of raw innocent husky sound to them and the backing track chugs along very nicely indeed, class tune and a great result for you Pete good.gif

Just cant wait to hear it out in a big room and a LOUD sound system thumbup.gif

Another strange statement Marc. An awful lot of people, including myself, aren't aware of anything that's on ebay until the last day - I only ever look under 'ending today'. So it could have been there for a month really, I still wouldn't have known about it. Secondly, did you see the header of the sales listing? Listing it as Jingle Jangle, I nearly didn't bother clicking on it and only did because I'd got nothing else to do. So a great deal less people probably heard it than you think.

Anyway I don't give a monkeys really, I love it, the buyer loves it, most other people love it, I've got my own copy and I've got the money for it so it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

To quote John Manship: they all dislike it except it'd be different if they owned it - then it would be the greatest record ever :D
