Guest ShaneH Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I would love to hear any interesting stories about any of you out there who have been to the US on buying trips. I know this thread has been covered more than once but I always like to hear interesting stories. So come on.....have you been held at gunpoint by a crazed junkie or did you find a Shrine 45 stuck to the bottom of a piss-pot? Shane
Guest Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 ill come up with a few old chestnuts but its only 4pm here so gotta get on with some work
Simon T Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 did you find a Shrine 45 stuck to the bottom of a piss-pot? In Chicago I think it was, there was a shop with about six long bins of 7's with out any sleeves @ 50 cents. One record didn't have any labels; in the run out it there was a raised'X' as in Sylvia and fcuk me Shrine! Also, there was SR 104, now what number was J D Bryant?! Getting home and putting it on the decks it turn ed out to be the Cautions Watch Your Step, still it could have been worse e.g.Linda & the Vistas!
Guest Dan Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 went on one trip mid to late 80s with my mate dave morris stayed in a hotel next door to the greyhound station in cleveland - inch thick glass on the reception was a bit of a giveaway. young black girl, about 17, got in the lift with us to our room and promptly took her top off and started gyrating around wiggling her tits at us. it was a small lift, too. dave was all up for giving her one but i pointed out the obvious folly in this and we passed on the opportunity much to her displeasure ('faggots' was her parting shot). slept fitfully in our fleapit room overnight, with the sounds of a couple rowing very violently in the next room - 'bitch...aaarggh...motherfucker....aaarrrggh... you for it now cocksucker etc etc etc'. at about 2am i got up and pushed a chest of drawers against the dividing door linking the rooms. next morning we tentatively removed the chest and pulled the door. it wouldn't open so we pushed and it opened immediately (ie no lock and opened their way so the chest of drawers was a bit pointless). fully expected to find bodies but they had made the bed and left a tip for the maid. bizarre. got absolutely no records at the cleveland record fair that day because it was actually in cincinatti. my mistake. got the greyhound bus to pittsburgh to meet a guy who will be know to many on here but whom i won't name for reasons of libel. picked us up in his little caddy and drove us to his house in the woods, spitting his chewing tobacco gob into a cup every 30 seconds. no word of a lie, it was almost full by the time we got there. showed us in, threw some great records at us and went to make us a coffee. at which point we noticed his bookshelves were full of books about homosexual killers. he came back in, started talking about jeffrey dahmer and asking about the ripper...then said did we want to stay the night. we made our excuses and left. very funny in retrospect (to us anyway).
Guest Dan Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 brilliant Dan Shane link got loads more where that one came from shane! most unfortunately reflect on my ineptitude, cowardice, stupidity etc several times found quite big records and put them back in the pile only for whoever i was with at the time to go 'what the f*** did you put that back for, that's being played by so-and-so....i'll have it you twat' lesson learned quite early - never go without a portable record player unless you have a photographic memory!!
s7oul Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 My mates and me did six trips to the states during the early 90's. The frightening one was in Memphis - Visited a record store on the outskirts of the city, a brother was being zipped up into a body bag outside the store. Not wanting to pass the shop by two of us went in whilst the others kept the Chevy running. We quickly went through as many tunes as possible but there wasn't anything there and our minds were not really on the job. Left shortly after that to drive by the Stax site, not much to see but an experience all the same.

Guest Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 Lived in baltimore region for nearly 17 yrs,--moved back to norfolk last yr. mainly i collected jazz/blues lp's. but i did manage to find a few nice singles --the standout of which was a mint in sleeve yvonne baker "didn't say a word" for 2 dollars, met dave withers over there, & ran into manship at a record fair a while back. my usa mate jas (also a dealer now)is a top collector , he posts on here often. A few trips around with jas turned up some nice material.----but mostly i scored with southern soul lps.----oh one other worth mentioning a mint unplayed 1958 sam cooke lp on blackkeen for 5 dollars. besides the lp collecting --i've really got to say i had the most fantastic 16 yrs + seeing live soul/jazz/blues acts. regards to all. nige.
