Guest remus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Across The Board right...this type of event is for people who really think they are the creme de la creme of NS punters. They get all of it, not just the 60's, therefore they are BETTER and MORE KNOWLEDGABLE than Mr Average punter who only wants to hear 60's, and they waste no time in telling people that they should open their minds and embrace 70's 80, whatever soul because after all, we all love soul music and you can't like 60's and not like 70's, can you? If I'd have had a machine gun when Albrighton started up, I could have saved the Northern scene singlehandedly link These across the board nights are for people who are into Soul music, simple as that. People who like Soul music DO want all of it, that's the point surely ref?. The across the board crowd ARE more knowledgeable about Soul, simple fact really. You can like whatever decade of Soul you like, but the fact remains that someone who has a "healthy" appetite for Soul music from 5 decades is going to be more knowledgeable, simple maths!
Guest Jamie Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Somebody was going to say it Jamie. link Can't hold my own p*ss can I????
Guest Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Can't hold my own p*ss can I???? link No, but it was just that I couldn't think of a funny reply like you did Victoria
Guest Jamie Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 No, but it was just that I couldn't think of a funny reply like you did Victoria link Nice one Penfold
Pete S Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Well im happy to call our nites across the board, and not because i Andy Dyson or Joe Dutton think we are more knowledgeable or the creme de la creme, just that we have 3 rooms running, northern modern and r n b.We have to call it something and across the board fits the bill . link Sorry Andy, misunderstanding here - 3 rooms, genres seprarated, fine - I'm thinking more like one room, all styles played, I personally wouldn't like it
Pete S Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 usually dancers so that the blokes can do their stomping and their wives can dance to a bit of disco thats all they are link How to make friends and influence people
vaultofsouler Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Just catching up on thread so no "personal attacks" meant.... just answering selected posts "on topic" Well im happy to call our nites across the board, and not because i Andy Dyson or Joe Dutton think we are more knowledgeable or the creme de la creme, just that we have 3 rooms running, northern modern and r n b.We have to call it something and across the board fits the bill . link Totally agree with you Andy on this .... especially at a "niter" venue.... something on offer for all us "nocturnals" .... personally think "soul nites" are a different thing.... hence reply to next post.... Thats the idea blade one room events have never been a favourite of mine,at middleton july 16 [blatant plug]3 rooms 24 djs about 15 record dealers booked in all genres covered, thats my idea of across the board.Have to say though not in favour of one room events mixing the styles, and the one room events i attend i prefer them to be 60s northern, just my poinion. . link As said for "niters" I'd agree.... presume your on about niters.... but have to disagree here though Andy if meaning "soul nites" as well, and I don't really think you are but it's got me thinking.... "local" soul nite "one roomed" events have to cater for "everyone" at the end of the day otherwise people wouldn't come back.... our nite is a "one roomed" event and we put "accross the board" on our flyers to indicate it ain't just "the same old same old", an excuse "to cover our backs" or "to apologise for what you might hear".... but neither are we adverse to "playing" what the "punters" ask for if the DJ's got it and is asked for it and it fits in with how the night is running then it's a goer in my view.... sometimes a soul nite can be "too many oldies" to some, "too much crossover" to others, "one to many modern" to some, "more underplayed" to others and of course the old chestnut of "not enough of ~~~~ (put what you like here) to anyone else.... we've been going 5 years and I "still" get these comments.... usually from the same people and their mates.... but I've learnt to think "f*** it".... as these people still come month after month.... prety much the "you can't do right for doing wrong" aspect of things IMHO.... when you've only got one room for the nite with a multitude of ideas of what "should" be played then you do what the nite appears to be demanding.... we've had successful nites of the non traditional stuff.... also more traditional stuff.... depends on "the floor" on any particular night.... These across the board nights are for people who are into Soul music, simple as that. People who like Soul music DO want all of it, that's the point surely ref?. The across the board crowd ARE more knowledgeable about Soul, simple fact really. You can like whatever decade of Soul you like, but the fact remains that someone who has a "healthy" appetite for Soul music from 5 decades is going to be more knowledgeable, simple maths! link Tottally agree on this where "soul nites" are concerned.... not neccessarily "niters" if they have the rooms as said in last bit.... but then again I'm easily pleased and brought up (dragged up ) on a "one roomed" niter that was Clifton Hall after my first few Wigan and other places visits.... What really pisses me off is when a niter/soul nite has say 2 rooms, northern and modern, and a guest DJ booked for both does his "modern room" spot THEN comes downstairs/moves rooms/whatever and proceeds to "carry on" playing his/her "older modern" in the "northern" room thinking it's what "we" want and carries on for a few even when the floor empties.... and I've seen/heard a few "big names" do this.... Sorry Andy, misunderstanding here - 3 rooms, genres seprarated, fine - I'm thinking more like one room, all styles played, I personally wouldn't like it link As said.... niter NO cause people travel to hear what they believe is being advertised.... "soul nite" YES cause of the "wider" sprectrum of visitors/punters likely to be present cause at the end of the day everyone "wants" to hear something they wanted/hoped they would hear.... horses for courses and one man's poison is anothers pleasure and all that.... Just an opinion and all that.... like an arsehole we've all got one .... now I need a beer ....
Russ Vickers Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Exactly right Ged. Re your point about Stafford though, 10 years before, ALL the major all nighters mixed 70s (inc new releases) with the sixties stompers.East Coast Connection, Gil Scott Heron, Willie J and Co Todays People etc were all massive records across the country. Its not a phenomena created by Stafford or any of the other major eighties all nighters, and all the sixties diehards who were around in the mid seventies can't deny the part these type of records played in the scene. Also, Sam and Athurs breakaway scene was known to all and sundry as the modern soul scene(early eighties), its not a nineties thing. If its soul music or northern soul music, the date should not come into it IMO. Steve link Ditto...........................Rock City ruled !!! Rules

If I'd have had a machine gun when Albrighton started up, I could have saved the Northern scene singlehandedly link Dont talk bollox & climb down from ya own arsehole mate, we're in the 21st Century & an All-Nighter should include all appropriate soul music from all decades, if it fits the night & the sounds are good enough play it. Newbury & Albrighton Nighters were a breath of fresh air & helped bring the scene kicking & screaming up to date. I think the only person that thinks they are better & more knowledgeable is you Pete. Open up your mind, & if you engaged it before you opened ya gob, ya might find you enjoyed something other than oldies , stop wallowing in the past. Russ

Simsy Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Yes it is, and they invented it so that's ok...but why do people have to copy an original idea? Sorry, just grates a bit thats all. link Yeah, if they did invent it, it's been copied quite a bit. About six and a half thousand references to '6t's' on Google. Not nearly as irritating as 'M8'. Or people who say haich. Or people who partake in rising inflections, going up in pitch at the end of a sentence. These people need to be destroyed, now.

Guest Soultown andy Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 As i said vaultosoul m8,i personaly prefer the rooms to play specific types of soul but i do realise there are many succesful one room clubs yours being one that do very well, and long may that continue. After all if we all liked the same stuff it would be very boreing,i myself started promoteing at a one room club but it just was,nt for me.The thing is wigan was one room, sheridans was two middleton is three and ive got me eye on one with four,so i might be in touch with you soon pete to talk about a bit of reggae .

Just to repeat.... agree whole heartedly on this issue where niters like what you run are concerned.... but soul nites are a different entity and a different type of paying punter all with an idea of what they want.... one feeds the other IMO for getting people to progress/move on to a more specific type of venue with a room for differing genres after hearing them all (sometimes) in one room.... Tek care .... Edited June 21, 2005 by vaultofsouler
