Guest Paul Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Yes,but what are/is the best??! I wouldn't like to say who was the "best" but, in my opinion, Eddie Holland was probably the finest lyricist of his time. And the songs of Holland/Dozier/Holland became the soundtrack to many people's lives. Can you imagine life without them???
Guest Paul Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 HDH leave the rest behind And they had a huge influence on other great writers. They changed pop culture more than anyone else.
Garethx Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 And they had a huge influence on other great writers. They changed pop culture more than anyone else. More than John Lennon and Paul McCartney?
Guest isis Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 bridges-eaton-knight Couldn't agree more...Fred Bridges is a God.
grantdyche Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Holland Dozier Holland,Norman Whitfield,John Lennon.Paul McCartney,Chuck Berry,Carl Perkins,Neil Sedaka,Pual Anka,George Gershwin,Paul Weller,Marvin Gaye All have written great songs or music,Soulful or not, Take this into consideration, Take a Northern Soul classic for instance:-The Dells "Run for cover" The music and lyrics for that little ditty could have been by grantdyche, Does that take away the fact that it's a good song The point I would like to make is that songs are made by song writers,Good song writers,Dont in general make good plumbers,And good plumbers don't in general make good song writers, Horses for courses,There are some good and some better, Grant
grantdyche Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Why have plumbers suddenly got into this thread, unless of course Rodger Collins was given a mention...You Sexy Sugar Plumber..I'll get me coat! Yeah ok mate,I do go off the road a bit sometimes,The point I was trying to make is that most good songs are by good song writers, For future reference to all SS readers,ANY posts by me after about 22.30hrs,Should be totally ignored, because Iam more than likely pi**ed,and in one of those moods, ask the wife she will tell you. Grant

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 More than John Lennon and Paul McCartney? ...Nobody changed pop culture more than Lennon & McCartney. Even H-D-H would say that if they were on here... The greatest soul songwriters have yet to be mentioned on here - Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. Individually and collectively. Even though the latter co-wrote "Stay With Me" - I can almost forgive him that, so good is the rest of his output.... Let's hear it for Bert and Jerry!
boba Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Carl Davis outta Chicago Tops for me(sorry Helen) gotta be H-D-H carl davis was mainly a producer -- what is your favorite song he wrote?
