Would class it as 'Cross Genre' really if I really had to pigeonhole it. Fits the bill on whatever scene you want to play it on. Just a quality record by a quality artist. dthedrug Posted June 19, 2009 Share Posted June 19, 2009 Hi in the 7ts I used to work as a roadie with several PA & Lighting companies, as such I had the opportunity to work with quite a few soul bands that toured the UK, GIL SCOTT HERON was a classic soul/jazz man, he was promoting his JO-BURG release it was strange for me at the time as the BOTTLE was a big sound at WIGAN CASINO with its great intro that hooked the dancers onto the floor it all the ingredients for dancers and purist lovers of soul it is not norther soul but SOUL OF THE TIME. the man and his band like most good quality bands were professional musicians and when in rehearsal they jammed across there set and it was very jazz/funk jamming that the music went where the musician wanted it to go, Gil was very influenced by the AFRICAN ONE "FELA KUTI" AS QUITE A FEW BLACK AMERICANS WERE at the time?. I Also worked with KOOL & THE GANG and there jamming style was the best FUNK that I have ever heard there were very influenced by Ed Kyser, however that's another story DAVE KIL Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

Well it was played in just about every club & disco down here in the South on its release, so I don't really think you could make any case for it being played on the Northern scene anytime before it was played elsewhere, let alone years. The South doesn't count does it? In the North it wasn't played in the normal clubs till the late 70s. It was played on the Northern scence in 74 from the LP. Not the single or the 12. My intention when I posted the reply - Genre : Soul , jazz fusion , which was taken from the original release for the 7" - was to simply highlight the original category the record was placed under , not to state , dictate or imply , that the record is , or should not be a " northern " one . " The Bottle " as you know , gained its' first , and favourable plays at The Mecca , where it was accepted without predudice , by open minded people who did not , or attempt to " label " the sounds that were played there . From The Mecca , the record was played at other venues , where it was similarly accepted , and gained popularity for what it was - a bloody good and danceable record . As Martin ( Cunnie ) stated in his reply - " The Bottle " crosses genres : IF we have to put it in a category , it should be " disques sans frontières " ........ The fact that it "crossed over" to be embraced on the wider Northern club circuit says a lot for it's popularity and the broad tastes of the average punters back then... or perhaps the lyrics touched a collective nerve! So, as the North was among the first to embrace the "The Bottle", I reckon we have a right to call it a "Northern sound" by reason of that initial dancefloor reaction, whatever it's beat 'n rhythm!
