It's from 1983. "Family" is Chris James of the Natural Four plus his kids. he told me ALA was run by richard pryor. Totally unrelated, but someone else recently told me that AVI was run by liberace.

I wonder if there is a connection between Mr G and the GC labels? Is the "G" in the labels the same person?

It would probably be better to look into funk releases from the same area, rather than chase the label. Texas, Jazzman has researched it a lot for the Texas Funk compilation.

The culture clash in the area and the studios used gave the best funk sounds in many people's opinion, independents, doing their own things, experimenting with sounds they believed in without commercial constraints. Mavericks of the soul circuit. Carleen and The Groovers, Mickey And The Soul Generation, Soul Seven, Lou Pride et al. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those key bands shared the same studio at some point, the sound from that area is very distinctive. One of the studios used in the area used a sewage pipe for reverb and an old 1950s recording deck. The production is very distinctive, perhaps even unique.

Texas is to 'deepfunk' what Detroit is to 'northern'. To be honest I've never really taken much interest in areas, studios, producers etc. I'll do a bit of research for you, Baz, see if I can report back with any info...

Imstill of the view that it is one of the few states in the us where you can still find tune after tune,gonna try and dig a bit deeper next trip!I can remember when Guy came back from Houston late eighties boy did he have some stuff,sure Kitch and Dean Anderson riaded along with many others,no one picking up rare funk however/could be wrong.

Jazzman's site is probably the best place to find it. Ignore the shocking cover design, the sleeve notes are good and the choices on the album are decent. Although I imagine the sleeve notes are available on the net and many of the choices on the album are available on MP3s on the net somewhere, maybe even on this site...

The thing about rare funk, 68-70 type deepfunk, is it so much rarer than rare northern soul, probably 10 times rare, maybe more. The number of good rare northern records is in the 1000s, good rare archetypal deepfunk is only in the 100s. I guess that not only was it made over a much shorter time period, remember it only existed in the first place because of experimentation so by the nature of the musicians who made it would naturally move on and experiment away from the sound, it was also much harder to make, the musicianship required was more skillful, the nature of the beats, it's 'jazzyness', was harder to make than the simple beats of motown soundalikes et al.

To put it in perspective, Sharon Jones and Daptone have been performing together at least twice as long probably three times as the period over which the music was originally made in the late 1960s. And because of this it's no wonder that almost all the original serious funk collectors from the late 90s early 2ks have moved on to other sounds such as RnB, jump jive, rock-a-billy, northern soul, crossover soul, beat ballads or disco to satisfy their search for new sounds, because new deepfunk sounds very rarely turn up...Good luck in your Texas search though
