...are you absolutely sure about this? I have what I think is a complete run of the Creative Funk label, all of which I bought as new or nearly new releases, and they're all purple with silver print.

Why would just that one be originally released as red and silver rather than in the regular 'colour scheme'?

I have to agree, I'm sure the Red/Silver were company reissues. I think the fact that all of the releases that aren't (weren't) in demand are Purple/Silver as well is telling. As well as "I need you" by Diane Jenkins.

Hello

Millbrand have obtained exclusive rights to the Creative Funk catalogue, including a few songs previously published by Kassner, for the world excluding US and Canada.

Deek DeBerry passed away recently but we're putting the history together with the help of other family members.

I have all the Creative Funk and Adelia 45s apart from 'Recycle'. If anyone can provide a dub and scan I'd be very grateful.

Best regards,

Paul Mooney

We own publishing rights and we also have master licenses so we might issue an album on Selecta/Shotgun or lease it to another label. Right now we're trying to verify any unissued tracks other than 'Truth And Love' by True Pages of Life.

I know there were other things but they've yet to be found.

Any info will be much appreciated.

Many thanks for the scan.

I also need confirmation of writer credits for 'Gee Baby, What About You'. Deek's brother Gary thinks it's an old doo-wop song or an adaptation ...something that came via James Shepard or Clarence Bassett. Clarence is also deceased.

It's nice to see so many people hold Diane Jenkins in such high regard. 'Ready Made Family' got heavy airplay in New York in 1972.

Does anyone know if Bell promo man Oscar Fields is still around?

Thanks again, Graham.

Mike Lofthouse has also been very helpful. Between us we have all the 45s apart from 'Recycle'.

I have the Wisdom 45 on US Adelia and UK Crystal but I didn't realise it also came out on Creative Funk.

By the way, does anyone have the version of 'I Need You' with a spoken intro? Does it actually exist???

I have a copy with spoken intro. (I think it's cool, but I wasn't aware that it was particularly rare)

As I recall, the Creative Funk "red(dish)" labels were widely regarded as bootlegs at the time.

The spoken intro one,if i'm not mistaken,is the same issue number as the ordinary one.?.A studio acetete of "I need you" went thru ebay some time back.Who got it?

I bought a Maroon and Silver coloured Tow A Way Zone from Craig Moerer and he assusured me it was the original.

It looks great quality vinyl and label, it does not look like a boot/pressing.

I had a Purple/White label boot of "I Need You" on Creative Funk and that looked every bit like a boot/pressing.

ok so are we now saying

purple/silver 1st label

red/silver 2nd

better sell the red one then-20-00

know purple and white was the boot

Thanks Dave,

I could use a dub if you could oblige.

Is the label copy exactly as the same as issues without the spoken intro?

Hello Mel,

Not sure if it's rare, it's just that I've never had a copy with the spoken intro.

I'd heard about it but I don't recall hearing it.

Hello again Dave,

I wonder if it's the same copy that Ian Levine once sold?

I have a master for the A side but Ian told me there was an intrsumental version on the flip of his acetate. If there is I'd appreciate a dub.

Best regards,

Paul

PAUL - got the Recycle 45 if you need for scan ?

Hello Glyn

Yes please I could use a high-resolution scan of both sides and dubs too.

Some Creative Funk master tapes have just arrived and it looks like they contain some unknown and unissued stuff. In a few days I'll know which tapes are okay and if there's anything good that we haven't heard before.

Let's hope we don't have any major problems with oxide shedding etc.

Best regards,

Paul

I bought "Tow-A-Way Zone" when it came out, chiefly for the ballad side and some time before it went big. That copy, which I still have, is purple/silver.

I wouldn't normally second guess Craig, but I think he's wrong. There's no reason at all why the first issue of this 45 should be maroon when, as previously stated, all other CF 45s were purple.

And the purple ones came through first, too. As Mel says, the maroon ones only pitched up after there was demand for the track.

I guess you had to be there....

Hello

I have the same Crystal promo, nice quality, as is the Wisdom 45 on Crystal. David Kassner sent me one back in 1975. I'll ask him if he can recall how many it sold. Not very many I think.

Best regards,

Paul

Hello Tony,

It was probably a quick repress but, who knows, it may have been a bootleg. Deek DeBerry was concerned about bootlegs at the time. he must have had a reason.

Best wishes,

Paul

P.S. I have some masters with unissued tracks now but, so far, all are instrumentals. It would be nice to find an unheard Diane Jenkins track.
