Rain Stops Play!...no Way

Last night when rain stopped play in England's twenty twenty match down went the TV sound and I pulled an LP out of a box I new I'd not listened to for some time when I lowered the stylus onto the run in on side one and as the album notes say the Detroiters started to play and sing "bring back the love" there was no way any amount of rain was going to stop play!

This fantastic collection of tracks that is Greetings!...We're the Monitors has got to be if not the best 60s Motown LP it's in the top two for me with the brill Temptin' Temptations being the other one of the two.

Temptations' THE SKY'S THE LIMIT - always a joy to play, not a dud track on there - gets better with age.

Hard for me to think of another, though WHAT'S GOING ON? is close...

Difficult one there are so many Motown album's that really mean the world to me and would rate highly in my top ten. If I had to choose two they would be firstly

THE ORIGINALS - California Sunset

(The defining moment of The Originals career in my opinion this album is so under-rated its un true, showcasing the different aspects of The Originals talent from uptempo moments to beat ballads the album has it all. The line up for this album consisted of Walter Gaines, Freddie Gorman, Hank Dixon and strangely Ty Hunter rather than C.P Spencer and the line up gives a whole different feel.)

THE TEMPTATIONS - Phoenix Rising

(The return of The Temptations in 1998, following on from the death of Melvin Frankling during the recording of 'For Lovers Only' in 1995 and the departure of his replacement Ray Davies due to throat cancer saw The Temptations performing without a bass singer for nearly two years until Harry Mcgilberry JR formerly of The Futures came on board in 1997, Theo Peoples left halfway through recording the album and was replaced by Barrington 'Bo' Henderson, whilst Terry Weeks replaced Ali Ollie Woodson who was also suffering from throat cancer.

The new line up entered into the recording studio and prduced one of the most consistent and well produced modern day Motown albums, the result being Phoenix Rising. There are two reasons as to why this album is dear to me, firstly it was a standout point in The Temptations history, this proved that the group could survive despite the death of Melvin Franklin and secondly because the album hits the heights on so many levels. 'Stay' is simply the perfect Modern Soul track whilst 'This Is My Promise' is classic Temptations.
