I'm with Pete Smith on this one. :P

A ) The were all predominently played on the 'Northern' scene years ago. OK, there are a few on the list that are pretty recent finds/plays a la Big Daddy Rogers (didn't that cross over from the Mod scene to Northern??) that were broken by DJ's championing that type of sound. There weren't R&B genre specific clubs when stuff like Valentinos, Mickie Champion, Willie Mitchell were played.

They were all played under the banner of 'Northern' at 'Northern Clubs'

B ) So you can't now tell us that they are R&B and have 'crossed over' to the Northern scene. It just defies logic.

And don't get me started on 'Deep Funk' crossing over into Northern :P

Very fair points...... all called R&B in the States before they were tagged Northern Soul over here. I should have asked "what are your top 10 RnB records that you like to hear in a main Northern Room".....(if any)

On that premise most records played on the Northern Scene should be called RnB then.

Now where do we go ?

BTW, hello to Kens cat. :P

It's nice to reason with someone for a change

I like:

Ted Taylor - Somebodys Always Trying

Mickie Champion - What Good Am I

Mack Starr - Down By The Waterhole

Rex Garvin - Sock It To Em JB (CHEESE :P )

And that really fast stomper one that me & Karen like with the line that goes "Does She Love You Like I Do" - can someone please tell what that is called?

I'm always blasted when people tell me and can never remember it :P

I wouldnt like to get rid of the pigeon-holing. Soul is so vast you have to seperate it some how when discussing, buying, selling etc.

the name-tags for soul will never cease.

Rach I never heard that mentioned or played by any Northern dj's - first time I heard it was at a mod do I somehow found myself at in Hastings...same with Ted Taylor.

Big Daddy Rogers was played to death on the mod scene in the eighties. Was surprised on getting back into northern soul in 97 to find those two being played. Charles Sheffield was also played by one DJ back then, but never knew what it was at the time. But best place to buy the records was down the 100 Club off northern soul dealers. :P

Started off by shifty record dealers who didn't want to put slow, white pop, disco,

deep or fcking rubbish, on the sleeves in their sales boxes, to sell them to unsuspecting punters.

50 types but they nearly all taste the same these days.

And when I was a lad, you could hear the pips rattle in a Coxs orange pippin.

I didn't say The Champion was bollocks, I said your assumption that it could be classed as R&B is bollocks, and it is!

link

Tend to agree Pete, but That Driving Beat falls the other side of the line.

Isn't the point though that all these tunes were accepted happily on the Northern scene, Jimmy Robbins being a good example, until somebody decided to label them R&B.....then all of a sudden there are people that don't like em any more!

BTW I recently discovered that Jimmy Robbins is in some funk DJ's play boxes :P

Discuss! :P

Enthusiastic mate!

They don't seem to have pre-conceived ideas...they just get on and dance to good tunes, whether they know them or not.

Also played Black Nasty and Clean Up the Ghetto...seemed to like them as well!

(Baz referred to it as "that sort of ...STUFF" :ohmy:whistling.gif )

not picking on you dave but some are missing the point about name-tagging the different genres. I aint got a clue what my mate stevie cato is saying to be honest

This discussion isnt about what should be played and where its about the different names for the different styles. Imagine trying to describe a record without using words whistling.gif

Sorry Shane,

I thought Steve meant that different sorts of record can find a place in the same room regardless of the description.

That's what I meant anyway, rather than one should not describe them in a certain way.....though as I posted earlier I do find the R&B/soul argument a bit academic

I'm not sure if I've made that very clear....hope so....don't want to stray off topic
