What are your top ten RnB records that have crossed over to be Northern Soul floor fillers?

I guess mine are:

I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robins

I Can't Get Enough - Johnny Sayles

Sweeter Than The Day Before - The Valentinos

What Good Am I - Mickey Champion

Sippin' Sorrow - Pearl Woods

My Baby Likes To Boogaloo - Don Gardner

If You Don't Come - Patience Valentine

The Champion - Willie Mitchell

It's Your Voodoo Working - Charles Sheffield

I'm A Big Man - Big Daddy Rogers

How much change would I get from £1000 for that little lot?

Catch that teardrop - 5 Royales (well this one probably owes its style to doo-wop maybe). Huge record everywhere and loved by all those who dont like RnB :P . First played by Hoss about ten years ago apparently.

I wouldnt have put the Valentinos in there to be honest but what do I know? :P

I was told Lonnie Lester - You can go is RnB.

To me its just Northern Soul, par excellance.

Same with Larry Davies - I've been hurt

Is Diamond Joe - How to pick a winner RnB?? If so I love it long time Jonny

If You Don't Come - Patience Valentine

Aw please tell me you don't really like this-it makes my skin crawl. The vocal is the scariest thing ever..I can make my 7 year old daughter do ANYTHING if I threaten her with a few bars of this record :P

You wouldn't put it in because you don't feel it is RnB or it's not a top ten?

I don't consider it to be RnB to be honest. I consider it to be solid group Northern.

IMO of course.

good thread though mate.

I don't get this. The following records were classed as Northern before anyone had associated the term R & B with this scene:

I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robins

I Can't Get Enough - Johnny Sayles

Sweeter Than The Day Before - The Valentinos

What Good Am I - Mickey Champion

The Champion - Willie Mitchell

The Valentinos is about as out-and-out northern as you can get. The Champion, r & b?

Load of bollocks...

I was pretty much thinking the same Pete, generaly speaking we could say that all the records we listen to is r&b but didnt we adopt these records on our scene many years ago and label them northern soul ? :P

Only recently heard this and can't get it out of my (limited) brain:

Dorothy Williams - Watchdog

Hippo.

P.S. Pete - another who agrees with you on Wilson Pickett, never got the appeal of that one at all!

Firstly as with all styles of music on this scene what may float one man's boat will often sink another and the R'n'B style is no different, you have to define R'n'B as some of the stuff played has no connection with the style at all, as i've said before a good bench mark record to possibly define the style already mentioned is 'Jimmy Robbins'.

Others that spring to mind are:- Hayes Cotton, Ray Agee, Dusty Wilson, Cookie Jackson, Little John, Marion James and numerous others, all in all these records deserve to be entered into the mix as long as the quality is there, however i think it all gets a little cloudy when the likes of Dean Barlow, Barbara Redd and Hopalong Cassidy and Co are given turntable action.....still as i say whatever floats your boat!

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

True enough Mark, one mans meat and all that...must admit that my benchmark is probably Big Daddy Rogers (oops, another Big daddy :P ), that kind of crunching beat is ideal Northern IMHO. Some of the almost doo-wop/rock 'n roll stuff is just too early for me, but I'm trying not to write it all off like some people as there'll always be something that grabs you and says "I'm the exception to the rule..."

None Martin, afraid to say they'd cost you more than that.

Having just totalled them up I think I would be lucky to get change from £1500 :P

Nice list Andy, but as you say not much hope of filling a northern night dance floor :P

Is that a sample of what will be played at Blocked on Saturday night?

I thought the idea of this thread was to list the big rnb tunes that crossed over to the northern dancefloor. It has become a thread about current rnb faves which wasnt the idea.

I like the idea of this thread and maybe it should be regimented in a similar style to the top ten northern guru's ?

Come on Rbman tell them the score :P

Oh no, that Wilson Pickett track is dire and shouldn't be played in mod clubs either. Glad to see someone listing that Ray Scott, my favourite of his, even better than Love Piled On Top Of Love, but not as good as Gladys Tyler, which is both RnB and soul, as is Mickie Champion. :P
