Pete S Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I'm sure Mike mentioned this about 2 years ago on Soul Source but there's a program called Shazam for your mobile or iphone and if you can't recognise a piece of music, you play it down the phone and it finds out what it is - yeah right I thought. So I found a record for sale with no details given https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NORTHERN-SOUL-60s-C-...3%3A10|294%3A50 then I listened, I couldn't identify it, so I played it into the Shazam program and it got it in 10 seconds! Corbett80 Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 (edited) I've tried this with some obscure but not neccesarily super rare records, and then things like the cairos which i played from cd....some it couldn't find, the latter it did. I think how it works is it accesses a database of every record thats been put to cd. Perhaps there is a central database somewhere? It dosen't seem to be able to find records that haven't been comped to cd at some point, at least thats what i've found. Would be amazed if it really can tell you any record ever recorded. For instance take a rare northern record like the tamangoes: i'll wager it can tell you what that is but i doubt it will recognise the b-side. Still an amazing tool all the same! I think you're right about it having to be on cd. Good though, and I was genuinely surprised when it found it.
Corbett80 Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Same here, a guy at work bet me i couldn't find a record it didn't know and when i came up trumps with one (can't remember what it was, something off the old soulclub site) i have to say i was quietly relieved after having spouted off about my knowledge of 'music no-one else knows about'
Pete Eccles Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 It has been going quite a while now, a few years back I used it to uncover a Terry Davies cover up as he played it, think it was a Lee Dorsey album track, he tried telling me I was wrong but I could tell he was gutted, and he admitted it years later,
Guest dundeedavie Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 woohoo i love this ...gonna have a great time playing with it

Guest NEV Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Sure it's only 50p if it identifies the track, no charge if it fails Tis correct
Mick Holdsworth Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Wonder how it would handle tracks like "What shall I Do"/Moonlight/New World etc, .. or maybe Cody Michaels/Liza Mae/Michael Christian etc. or any other variation on muliple uses. Probably come back with the First one it found without going further into it's database Mick
Pete S Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 pretty sure it's free on the iPhone I thought it was free on the iphone...it'd better be!
Guest NEV Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I thought it was free on the iphone...it'd better be! Say's Pete with a gulp and a sickly feeling

Charles Dickens - In the city in maybe 2000 I was applying for a job at motorola and the job was to work on a system that did exactly this. I didn't take the job because I would have had to move to London. I don't know if the system they were developing (or maybe contracted to work on) ended up being this or connected to this or if this shazam system was developed independently.
Ian Williams Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Some guy from Bristol showed me Shazam in 2001 or so at a do where Ady was playing (In the Soul Desert that was Bristol) Unfortunately noone that night played a cover up but I rushed home, got out me live tapes of the 100 Club from way back, fast fowarded through (remember that - before 'instant click' CD's..............founds Butch's Temptones cover up... ....and....NOTHING - DAMN
