All tracks were chosen by Trever Hall, and faded in and out perfectly from one track to another, his sleeve notes suggest the the sounds were played at his local Disco, all orig artist. side one 6 by 6 agent doble o soul take some time out whats easy for two youre not an ordinary girl this old heart something about you cant help myself side two festival time little darlin helpless lonely, lonely girl back street nothins too good for my baby whole lo of shakin in my heart all turned on

Just such quality of tracks IMO Also -- Soul Food (Minit 1968) 33 Minits of Blues and Soul (Minit 1968) BackTrak 6 with the Revilot stuff on it (again because of the period it was released)

If thats what was played at the Mecca, thank God I only went to Wigan. Curtis Blandon, Luv Bugs, Sandy Waddy, pile of cack. No, take that back, worst - Stax Northern Disco Sounds, compiled by Ian Dewhirst, Stax - as I said before, the only Northern compilation with only 2 Northern tracks on it. Got to disagree on this one....remember buying this as a teenager and my copy sits in my mates attic to this day. WILLAM BELL 'Happy', JIMMY HUGHES 'Chains of love', TEMPREES 'At last', RANCE ALLEN 'There's gonna be a showdown', thats 4 good tracks for me straight away... As for LEVINE'S, bought that too on release, yeah a few dud tracks but some absolute belters, especially at the time, SHIRELLES 'Last Minute Miracle', MAXINE BROWN, JACK MONTGOMERY, any compilation LP carrying those 3 alone could never be the worst in Northern History! Superb artwork too, compared to the Stax one which was ultimate cheese on that front! How either of these fall below that Spark compilation beats me!

Some I dont think mentioned. Record collector vol 1 on Destiny. Arin Demain, The Inticers etc. Great stuff. And a couple of naughty ones. Colin Bee's Lp, Northern Soul Gold with oldies like Otis Smith on, and All Night long. The Chicago Lp released about Stafford time. Mine is 533. Bought it new, wore it out, got another one, came close to wearing that out too... That was the first LP I bought, I remember picking it up second hand in about 1968/69. My first introduction to MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS - My Baby Loves Me, which to this day remains my fave. track by them.

Yeah Medicine Bend is awful, but at the end of the day compilation albums were a valuble introduction for a lot of people back then and I think 3 or 4 good tracks on an album actually changed some peoples lives. I know that when I bought the yellow cheapo MOTOWN album with the awful cartoon dancers on the front, FRANCES NERO'S 'Keep on loving me' explodede into my eardrums and was the biggest single influence on my 'conversion' at that time...

It always reminds me when I first got into Nothern, all tracks are winners!. I will post a scan at the weekednd when I get from Sweden (where I am working this week)

I was the cold one.
Sweeney Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 (edited) As a callow youth I had (still have!) all the usual suspects - the Casino Classics and the Grapevine LPs etc. They were fine and not a bad snapshot of the state of the Northern Scene of the time - both good and not so good. But the compilation LP that really changed and educated my view of how amazing rare soul could be was Kent's 'Pure Soul' (Kent 019). It blew me away - not a bad track on it.
