Best - Sold On Soul, compiled by R Searling, UNited Artists

Worst - Solid Soul Sensations, compiled by I Levine, Pye. If thats what was played at the Mecca, thank God I only went to Wigan. Curtis Blandon, Luv Bugs, Sandy Waddy, pile of cack.

No, take that back, worst - Stax Northern Disco Sounds, compiled by Ian Dewhirst, Stax - as I said before, the only Northern compilation with only 2 Northern tracks on it.

Always keep going back to "The Very Best Of The Dells" every track a corker, also something I found in a 1.99 bin a few years back called "Essential Blues And Soul" gets a fair battering.

No S.S.S. is still one of the best.

S.O.S. is ok too, apart from "Walk With A Winner" always hated that record.

I can't remember what was on the Stax one?

Worst Casino Classics or Black Magic Treats!

Have to agree with you there Pete. That's what happened when Dave Godin rang up in '74 asking if I wanted to compile a Northern Soul Stax LP! I said yes, of course, and then I realised I wasn't exactly working with the best core material. I'd rather have done the Southern one to be honest......and I was equally as scathing when Ace brought out the recent Stax meets Motown comp........

Meant to tell you something that made me laugh, I found an old issue of a mag I wrote circa 1992, Beatin Rhythm issue 6 I think it was, and I was reviewing some old fanzines and there was one, I'm sure it was called Talk Of The North and it went something like "there's contributions from DJ Frank the only purpose of which seems to be to tell us how many women he's shagged" :D:huh::lol:

Yep, that sounds par for the course LOL. Don't know where I got the energy for 2 all-nighters and an all-dayer every weekend then a shagging marathon on the Sunday night. No wonder I was always knackered 'til the following Thursday............

I can't believe nobody has suggested the Motown comp.

'This is Northern Soul Vol 1' every one a winner with the possible exception of Goodnight Irene (I think it's because my parents used to play the proper version of it from the 40's when I was a kid and I have been left scarred by it).

Volume 2 is pretty fine too.

1. Think It Over (Before You Break My Heart) - Brenda Holloway 2. Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - Frank Wilson 3. This Love Starved Heart Of Mine (It's Killing Me) - Marvin Gaye 4. Goodbye Cruel World - Linda Griner 5. Share A Little Love With Me (Somebody) - The Monitors 6. Forever In My Heart - The Temptations 7. I'm Still Loving You - Kim Weston 8. He's All I Got - The Supremes 9. Just Walk In My Shoes - Gladys Knight & The Pips 10. Keep On Lovin' Me - Frances Nero 11. Crying In The Night - The Monitors 12. You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me) - Kim Weston 13. Like A Nightmare - The Andantes 14. A Thrill A Moment - Kim Weston 15. I'll Keep Holding On - The Marvelettes 16. Truly Yours - The Temptations 17. When I'm Gone - Brenda Holloway 18. Just A Little Misunderstanding - The Contours 19. No One Could Love You More - Gladys Knight & The Pips 20. You Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New - Virgil Henry 21. Goodnight Irene - The Originals 22. I Gotta Find A Way (To Get You Back) - The Temptations 23. What More Could A Boy Ask For - The Spinners 24. It's Never Too Late For You And Me - Gladys Knight

Are "Greatest Hits" allowed?

Up with the very best of them must be the first U.K. Temptations Greatest Hits - TML 11042 from 1967.

If I was selling example below it would be in my "shabby chic" category. Looking like every 1960's album cover should. Every crease a battle scar from some teenage party or youth club evening.

Click on the link for Amazon and hit the "Listen to all" button. Something very, very near to musical perfection will emanate from your speakers.

I wonder how many of us had our first slow dance or snog to one of the tracks on there??!!:wicked::D

My favourite LP is Backtrack 6 which I bought when it came out in 1970.

Lots of great Detroit tracks including If This Is Love I'd Rather Be Lonely, Headache In My Heart, You've Got To Pay The Price, and my favourite: The Parliaments - Don't Be Sore At Me.

This is northern soul for me does it (the grapevine one) except for tony middleton to the ends of the earth which i never really liked much, but all the rest are CLASSICS! Feel I got to stand up for stax northern lp, introduced me at a young age to Rance Allan, The story of my life, Chains of love wont set me free, temprees, also pye disco levine comp - masqueraders do you love me baby , do you believe it, shirelles just off top of my head. All comps have duff trax and agree that UA searling comp is a classic but still contains Surrounded by a ray of sunshine which I loved at the time but really is pop rubbish. Controversial !

One I bought when it came out on cassette in the early 70s was "Motown Memories 16 none stop Tamla Hits" with 6 x 6, Festival Time, Take Some Time Out For love etc. I found a copy in a charity shop for 50p recently, put it on, and although I have heard all of the tracks a million times over in the last 30 years, it just took me back to the age of 14 again(not literally). One that started me off all those years ago.

Just found it and here is the track listing

Six By Six - Earl Van Dyke

Agent Double O Soul - Edwin Starr

Take Some Time Out For Love-Isley Bros

What's Easy For Two-Mary Wells

You're Not An Ordinary Girl-Temptations

This Old Heart Of Mine-Tammi Terrell

Something About You-4 Tops

I can't help Myself-Earl Van Dyke

Festival Time-San Remo Strings

Little darlin'-Marvin gaye

Helpless-Kim Weston

Lonely Lonely Girl Am I-Velvelettes

Back Street-Edwin Starr

Nothings Too Good For My Baby-Stevie Wonder

Whole Lot Of Shakin' In My Heart-Miracles

All Turned On-San Remo Strings

How excellent is this? all running into each other brilliant!!!

That was originally posted in 2004 for a similar thread

As for the first post on the thread about "Jumping At The Go Go" when I bought it I thought it was great, apart from judy freeman & blackrock, hold on, th track still does nothing for me.

As for best compilation album / cd,

I will put forward,

Deep Beats 60's Northern Soul vol 2,

Tracks include:-

First Choice -- This is the house

The MVP's --- Turning My Heartbeat

Al Wilson --- Help Me

Jackie Wilson --- I Don't Want To Lose You

Tony Lammar --- In The Nick Of Time

Maxine Brown --- One In A Million

Chuck Jackson --- Good Things

Carmen Taylor --- You're Putting Me On

Young Holt Unlimited --- California Montage

A few other's a bit dubious including Wayne Gibson for example, but for a low range priced cd about 7 quid you cant complain,

From the compilation point of view, and with related choice track as per question, whilst initially certain compilations "did it for me" the track albeit that didn't follow traditionalist "Northern Soul "ilk but was always "ringing in my ears" was the Curtis Mayfield penned "Make me believe in you" by Patti Jo as part of the Solid Soul Sensations Album.....A difficult acquisition I believe as a 45......but one I let go early doors

My 2 favourite compilations ( blue one and red one ) was the Ollie McLaughlin story, with picks from all his labels covered and some great classics like Belita Woods- Magic corner , Jimmy Delphs , etc on the two albums. They were a US import i think and came out in the 80,s.

best

Pete M

(can pull them out and do the lists of tracks if someone really wants to know them)
