Pete S Posted June 5, 2009 Author Posted June 5, 2009 PRAISE TO ISLAND RECORDS FOR GIVING US THE LEGENDARY NICK DRAKE . BRI PINCH. SUNDAY CHILLOUT, 7TH JUNE. BENTINCK, BACK ROOM, 19TH JUNE. Last week when we were in Wales I had to sit outside the caravan to smoke, and so to kill time I graded every track on one of my ipods, it's an interesting fact that of 3 Nick Drake lp's, only one track got more than 2 stars. Every track exactly the same. I love his voice, and the mood of the songs, but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Also interesting that apparently the 3 best ever Jam tracks are "Ghosts", "The Bitterest Pill" and "Smithers Jones"!

Pete S Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Enjoyed the program but yet again, it was so Marley-centric, anyone would think he invented reggae music.
Pete S Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Very interesting programme, thanks for the tip. Where were you in Wales?, and was it raining? Please tell everyone, it does not always rain in Wales!! P Only just over the border in Carno...it was so hot I even took my shirt off at one point, but that was to go in the swimming pool!
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 PRAISE TO ISLAND RECORDS FOR GIVING US THE LEGENDARY NICK DRAKE . Nick Drake - dull as dishwater then, dull as dishwater now. Never 'got' him at all at the time and his music still leaves me cold. Not a patch on his label mate John Martyn IMO. Just watched the Island programme - it was alright for what it was. There wasn't a lot of sense of a timeline, particularly in the early part. You'd get Blackwell talking about the early releases, then Muff Winwood would come on and say something like "when (the Spencer Davis Group) signed to Island (Blackwell) was just an importer of Jamaican music", conevniently overlooking the earlier worldwide success of Millie and one of Blackwell's other pan-global successes, the Caravelles. Then you'd see something like "Paper Sun was the first release on pink Island" when, in fact, John Martyn's "London Conversation" album was the first album and Owen Grey's "Help Me"/"Incense" was the first single (Paper Sun was the thrid). And what happened to the Sue label and Guy Stevens, surely a vitally important part of Blackwell's early empire building? Did it get a mention? If so I must have been out of the room for a nano-second. The early bit was good, though, even with the vagueness of the chronology....

You make me laugh Tony, I sat and watched it and saw that Traffic single with the catalogue number 6002 described as the first release and I thought to myself, I bet Tony Rounce spots that as well as me!
Pete S Posted June 8, 2009 Author Posted June 8, 2009 How good was Jimmy Cliff? A lot better than he was at Glastonbury last year!
Guest Brian Fradgley Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Enjoyed programme no end. Blackmore must be living one hell of a life! (I've seen his place in Jamaica!). Personal favourites not played include Robert Parker "Barefootin/Let's go baby" on white Island label Jackie Edwards "Feel so bad" surely one of the pioneers of Jamaican crossover Joyce Bond "Do the teasy" OK, I know it's Bluebeat/Ska but back in the sixties DJs used to mix it up a bit - it was all so fresh and new!
