Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I don't know whether AATS is the right place for this, but we'll start here and a mod can move it if they feel it's more appropriate elsewhere... I have just received the distressing news that not just one but all of Mark Lamarr's Radio Two shows are about to be axed by the BBC in what I assume is a cost-cutting excercise. Given that Mark is one of the best friends that specialist music has ever had, these actions are nothing short of disastrous. And the fact that they can't find space of any kind for a man who really plays a bit of everything - and, more importantly, loves everything he plays - is truly criminal. There's a petition going round to save Mark's "Shake, Rattle & Roll" show. Given that companies like Ace need all the Mark's we can get to promote our wares on the airwaves, I'm more than happy to post the following up here: "Hello friend or stranger You may be aware of the cancellation of Radio 2s Shake Rattle And Roll and of our campaign to rescue it. So far we've been collecting names on myspace with the eventual aim of a mass petition to Radio 2, and we need your help. If you have a database, do a mass mailout, run a blog or publication or have any other means of contacting the audience who may be disappointed by the loss of the show, please include an alert of the situation and/or a link to the myspace page. This is the first stage, as soon as we have a good amount of response there we'll get the petition in full swing and be in touch again, as we know not everyone necessarily wants to be involved in the murky world of social networking! In a month or so we'll issue a statement and an email address so that anyone else who wants their voice heard can simply leave their address, thereby joining the petition. It goes without saying, of course, that this database will be used only once then destroyed and you won't be receiving ads for Viagra and timeshares for the rest of your days. Thanks in advance, The Campaign To Save Shake Rattle And Roll. All of the details of our grievance can be found here https://www.myspace.com/saveshakerattlenroll ...if you feel you want to lend your signature to this worthy cause (as I'm just about to) please let your conscience be your guide... Simsy Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Should do something on Facebook also. This is a real shame - ML's alternative sixties show was one of the best on the Radio.
Ian Parker Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 grieves me to know that they will axe a quality presenter and his shows, but leave old 'has beens' and their egos: Steve Wright (dreadful), jeremy vine etc etc. Lamarr plays some good stuff on there. the BBC should leave him alone !!!!

Guest ScooterNik Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Tell him its a disgrace that he's getting dumped on, surely it goes against everything that Radio 2 is meant to do? I'm disgusted with this news.

Guest in town Mikey Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 (edited) But he is from Swindle! He also came to a few Eat gigs, so he cant be all bad. I remember him introducing Eat at some weekend festival type event in Portsmouth, and jigging away at the side of the stage. He also came to see them at the Camden Palais, and I believe tried to pick up Embo, one of the FMB crowd. Ask him if he has her number Ady, because I lost it. Last I heard she was working at XFM. It is a shame though. Radio 2 has emerged into a good station to hear some music that comes as a nice surprise. Edited June 4, 2009 by in town Mikey
Pete S Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Right I sent that message out to my entire mailing list, many of whom will be listeners so I hope it will help. That'll be a fiver please.
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Its required listening in the early hours of a Saturday morning after dropping off the Hemsworth soul contingent following a Friday night session somewhere in Yorkshire. Its a heady eclectic mix & always something interesting and indeed educational. The David Ruffin voiceover tied in with a reggae backing track was certainly a surprise on last weeks show. Whats next the demise of Brian Matthew on a Saturday morning !!! all in order to pay an extorinate amount of money to that *&^**^%%^&&* J. Ross Dave
Guest Richard Bergman Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Sad to see this is the case. Have met him a few times at Beatin' Rhythm and he is a welcoming chap who is passionate about what he does. I suppose these qualities don't mean alot in radio-land. Gerri Halliwell hasn't taken up a role at bbc 2 has she ??

Ady Croasdell Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 The chap's in good spirits and is very pleased with the campaign. I've sent him a link to this thread, so you should get your fiver soon Pete. I think on one of his last shows he wasn't even allowed to say goodbye to his listeners; they're pre-recorded and the Beeb are terrified about any potential controversy.

He can keep his fiver, I think Marks' shows are the best thing on the radio since Mark Radcliffe's original show Out On Blue Six which was like the first to play a really good mix of good music, be it from the 60's, 70's, whatever decade. I also doubt very much if Mark would have any trouble being able to replicate these shows on another station because there's obviously a demand for alternative music like this, it's always great to hear music which isn't just the familiar 500 record playlists that all radio stations have

Guest bobby's girl Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 What a bloody travesty this is. Seems they're out to homogenise the airwaves now. Has any of those Radio 2 controllers got any pedigree to speak of? I mean keeping Alan TITmarsh on. For funks sake! Mark Lamarr is probably one of the most illuminating, truly eclectic deejays out there, with a genune passion for his subject. Aside from his interest in northern, his knowlege of rockabilly/western swing is second to none. Some years ago he did a series on 2 called The Broken Spoke - a true Texas Honky Tonk, about a legendary country music venue in the lone star state. Mark went out to Texas, really got into the spirit of things, talked to some of the old boys from the Texas Playboy days and, well it just made for one of the best, most entertaining radio docs I've ever listened to. Pure class. Where do I sign??!!!
Guest Krissii Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 plus the reggae show - FULL knowledge of studio 1 / coxsone / treasure isle / trojan / blue beat discographies plus so much more.... what is the deal with these DICKS ruining music and knowledge of music?

Ady Adey the man,s a fucking genius, the programme controllers are a sickly bunch of unaware control freaks who should be continually finding ways to retain this man,s services to the history of quality contemporary music of all genre,s ,and i might add, have little or no creative recognition or are too selfish to acknowledge such talent for communication and never will for as long as they themselves retain a hole in their anus, anni?(plural?)Who is the replacement then, Tobey :I have the pursed lipped look of a man who,s just had anal sex and DIDN,T like it,Anus? Guest bobby's girl Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hi, Just sent my complaint to the BBC. Goes something like this: Just writing in the strongest possible terms to complain about the Mark Lamarr show being axed from Radio 2. How short-sighted can you be? You have a unique talent in Mr Lamarr. A man who has a breadth of musical knowledge unlike any prime time radio deejay I know. His musical interests are expansive, covering everything from northern soul to reggae to rockabilly to obscure country. Where else would you find someone with that vast degree of knowledge? Certainly not Fearne Cotton, or Alan Titchmarsh, that's for sure. Why this mania to 'homogenise' the airwaves, making everything 'safe' and 'anaemic'? Aren't our lives homogenised enough? Mark Lamarr has invention, passion, and an intuitive knowledge of a wide range of music. These are qualities you should embrace and hold onto come what may. Why don't you play the maverick card? Re-consider your decision, and reinstate Mr Lamarr, and for once make a sound, intelligent, and intuitive decision. P.S. What do you think the late John Peel would have made of all of this... think you know the answer to that...! ...So guys its over to you. Pull your fingers out, an' get complaining. Been thinking of the people they might replace him with. Tara Palmer wots her face... Or straight from the terraces (of Wimbledon) Cliff Richard. (Ain't he a mate of Gloria Honeyford?)... Go on guys, cos I don't fancy the idea of waking up to Titmarsh and his f*cking petunias!

Guest bobby's girl Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 please explain, sounds of the 60,s is not being axed is it ? Apparently all the specialist shows are being axed. Only one they're retaining is 'God's Jukebox' ...tho' don't quote me on that!

Jayne.x No, Jayne, she's got the show before "Sounds Of the 60s". That's not going, as far as I'm aware - I believe that it's the most popular 'satnd alone' show that R2 has...
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 With an acknowledgement to "Bobby's Girl" for her inspirational prose, I also composed a snottogram to the BBC complaints department. I dont suppose I'll ever get a reply but if I do I'll post it up. Dave I feel I must write in the strongest possible terms to complain about the Mark Lamarr show being axed from Radio 2. This must be one of your most ill advised decisions in recent times. The man has a unique talent. His depth of knowledge and the ability to find and indeed play his broad spectrum of music which can range from Rare Soul through Gospel, rockabilly, early rock & roll, the early & indeed darker side of country music. His show is always worth listening too and can also be construed as educational, Mark's show crosses all musical divides therefore in order to continue with the eclectic appeal of your Radio station his show must continue. The late DJ, John Peel who did such a lot for alternative music on BBC Radio must be spinning in his grave at the thought of such a ill-advised, misinformed & knee jerk reaction from those in authority in Radio 2. Whilst not wishing to denigrate other DJ's on Radio 2, Mark has certainly proved that he knows a lot more about music that some of the other, more well known "names" to grace your programme schedules, indeed quite why in these fiscally challenged times certain "names" appear to command such extraordinary salaries when all they do is gabble on at length between CD tracks that are chosen by a computer makes me wonder if I am listening to a music station or have tuned into Radio 4 by mistake !!! You need to value DJ's who choose their own playlists and are not afraid to let the listeners hear something new, old, obscure. Music is one hell of a powerful tool in this enlightened world so re-consider your decision. I look forward to hearing from you,
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Whoops, I appear to have missed off "please" re-consider your decision. So thats me probably bombed out WebbyDublin, I didnt think that my avatar had a "reserved" label on it. Accept my apoligies but in my defence I did have the "Man from U.N.C.L.E." spycase given to me approx 1967 when the show was in its heyday. Open Channel D Mr Waverley !!! Dave
