Guest Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Little Samson - Don't Take Your Love - EL D £174 good price for that one!
John Al Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Shirley Lawson looks very expensive!! Most shocked that anyone bid for the Diana Ross, I know it's a collector's item but did you click the soundfile???
Dylan Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 emanuel laskey was very cheap imo dave verging on disco though for my ears not one of his best.
Pete S Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Shirley Lawson looks very expensive!! I'd sell you 3 of those for that price!
Guest Polyvelts Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Don't know what the general asking price for Gloria Hill is ? Was this about right ? I thought with recent JM auction prices in mind this might have gone higher ?
The Tempest Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 £105 for The Spellbinders album ! And I thought the Tempests album was getting silly prices !
Glynthornhill Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Three of four way over the prices other dealers would get. However, Emanuel Laskey around 60% of its usual price. Not ' trendy ' enough yet for the cheque book charlie collectors !
oldsteve woomble Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Emanuel Laskey v good value IMO...... Great record
Mark B Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 What happened to the Kenny Gamble then????? Dont know phil it was still there earlier today as i played the soundbite but i didnt see it at the end, perhaps someone else can have a look. mark
Upthejunction Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 What happened to the Kenny Gamble then????? £853 Is it worth that much ?
Quinvy Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 £853 Is it worth that much ? Yes that's slightly more than I got for my issue. This was mint unplayed, so this seems to be about the going rate.
Gigs Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 SHIRLEY LAWSON-----HOW MUCH ----F%^KIN HELL THATS MORE THAN THE BACK BEAT DEMO, BET G BROWN WAS BEHIND IT, CHARGING IT TO HIS EXPENSES
Guest posstot Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 verging on disco though for my ears not one of his best. Verging on Disco?? . I like that attitude, keep it up!!!
Dylan Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Verging on Disco?? . I like that attitude, keep it up!!! i've got a few of his more traditional 45s and have seen this on ebay a few times but can't quite get on with it. it does seem popular though.
Denbo Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Shirley Lawson - One More Chance c/w the Star - Soul City £569 Jesus that one hell of a price Gloria Hill - Be Somebody - Deep £709 Shirley Lawson - AMAZING price. Gloria Hill - AMAZING record.
bri pinch Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Shirley Lawson - AMAZING price. FOR WHAT REALLY IS A UK REISSUE OF A THREE YEAR OLD USA 45. BRI PINCH. SUNDAY CHILLOUT, 7TH JUNE, HORSE AND GROOM PUB, EAST LAITH GATE, DONCASTER.
Corbett80 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I paid about £130 for Emmanuel Laskey about two years ago...thought that JM's price was the current rate at the moment? Its the silver (inferior imho) label version with the wanky synth as the backing comes in that goes for a few hundred isn't it?
Garethx Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 The Emmanuel Laskey 45 seemed to receive a boost collecting-wise when certain deejays were playing the rarer (arguably inferior) version by Clyde Milton. Should never really go for a couple of hundred quid as it's not really that rare is it? Something of a cheap staple in the collection of anyone who was interested in the early 'modern' scene. I'm sure a quick straw-poll here would yield the result that many have owned a copy of this 45 for at least some period of time. Once the price went to three figures I sold mine very easily.

Once the price went to three figures I sold mine very easily. Exactly the same scenario for me Gareth I now have the Silver label version which although is not as good as the Green one (probably because it shares the same backing as Clyde Milton) is probably harder to get hold of ??? I don't get it, and never have. I've had this friendly arguement in endless record bars at Niters since these tunes were in their first years of play. Surely the Fourth Day version is the one to own? Everything about this record is way much better than E.L. but the final 40+ secs of the F.Day track are heartwrenchingly soulful ( you know the bit when the singer lets go a bit) Plus the lyrics fit much better, the overall feel of the record makes all other versions/takes of this backing sound like unfinished demo's to me. In my memory it was always the F.Day version that filled the floor back in the day. I can only figure that E.L.'s versions were deemed as " rare" and therefore more worthy, but recent internet sales don't seem to bear out this "rare" tag, or am I wrong ? I've always thought that if the E.L. versions had someone else's name on it then it would have never got beyond 3 spins and out. And before you start throwing stones I am a fully paid up member of the E.Laskey Appreciation Society and love almost all of his output, just definitely not this one. Sorry.

I have kept Fourth Day, for all the reasons you mention above, plus also for the fact that it has a very good b-side.
Denbo Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Shirley Lawson - AMAZING price. FOR WHAT REALLY IS A UK REISSUE OF A THREE YEAR OLD USA 45. BRI PINCH. SUNDAY CHILLOUT, 7TH JUNE, HORSE AND GROOM PUB, EAST LAITH GATE, DONCASTER. And strangely, for once, more sought after on UK than US. Not that I'm complaining, I like it that way.
Pete S Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 And strangely, for once, more sought after on UK than US. Not that I'm complaining, I like it that way. I think it's way harder on US, I've literally lost count of the amount of UK ones I've had, but it is over 15 copies. I don't even rate this at 100 quid on UK, seriously.

Have a Soul City one now and I loved the auction price. Wonder if John wants another copy ? Kegsy

Wouldn't dream of arguing with you on the Backbeat being rarer. Partly 'cos I'm not that knowledgable on US imports, except perhaps the R&B stuff. Edited June 4, 2009 by denbo
Garethx Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 anyone got a 4th day clip thanks There's a clip of each side of the DT 45 in refosoul.
