Don't know what the general asking price for Gloria Hill is ? Was this about right ? I thought with recent JM auction prices in mind this might have gone higher ?

What happened to the Kenny Gamble then????? unsure.gif

Dont know phil it was still there earlier today as i played the soundbite but i didnt see it at the end, perhaps someone else can have a look.

£853 Is it worth that much ?

Yes that's slightly more than I got for my issue. This was mint unplayed, so this seems to be about the going rate.

i've got a few of his more traditional 45s and have seen this on ebay a few times but can't quite get on with it.

it does seem popular though.

I paid about £130 for Emmanuel Laskey about two years ago...thought that JM's price was the current rate at the moment?

Its the silver (inferior imho) label version with the wanky synth as the backing comes in that goes for a few hundred isn't it?

Posted

The Emmanuel Laskey 45 seemed to receive a boost collecting-wise when certain deejays were playing the rarer (arguably inferior) version by Clyde Milton.

Should never really go for a couple of hundred quid as it's not really that rare is it? Something of a cheap staple in the collection of anyone who was interested in the early 'modern' scene. I'm sure a quick straw-poll here would yield the result that many have owned a copy of this 45 for at least some period of time. Once the price went to three figures I sold mine very easily.

Exactly the same scenario for me Gareth

I now have the Silver label version which although is not as good as the Green one (probably because it shares the same backing as Clyde Milton) is probably harder to get hold of ???

I don't get it, and never have. I've had this friendly arguement in endless record bars at Niters since these tunes were in their first years of play. Surely the Fourth Day version is the one to own? Everything about this record is way much better than E.L. but the final 40+ secs of the F.Day track are heartwrenchingly soulful ( you know the bit when the singer lets go a bit) Plus the lyrics fit much better, the overall feel of the record makes all other versions/takes of this backing sound like unfinished demo's to me. In my memory it was always the F.Day version that filled the floor back in the day. I can only figure that E.L.'s versions were deemed as " rare" and therefore more worthy, but recent internet sales don't seem to bear out this "rare" tag, or am I wrong ?

I've always thought that if the E.L. versions had someone else's name on it then it would have never got beyond 3 spins and out. And before you start throwing stones I am a fully paid up member of the E.Laskey Appreciation Society and love almost all of his output, just definitely not this one.

Sorry.

I have kept Fourth Day, for all the reasons you mention above, plus also for the fact that it has a very good b-side.

And strangely, for once, more sought after on UK than US. Not that I'm complaining, I like it that way.

I think it's way harder on US, I've literally lost count of the amount of UK ones I've had, but it is over 15 copies. I don't even rate this at 100 quid on UK, seriously.

I concur. Always been relatively difficult to buy on US.

I trod on my U.S. Demo when P**ssed years ago.

Cracked it right across !!!!!!!!!

Have a Soul City one now and I loved the auction price.

Wonder if John wants another copy ?

My "more sought after" comment really referred to the AMAZING price fetched for the UK release.

Wouldn't dream of arguing with you on the Backbeat being rarer. Partly 'cos I'm not that knowledgable on US imports, except perhaps the R&B stuff.
