Guest Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 No top 500 stuff please, just quality sides that you havnt heard played out for years......the more obscure the better !!! Russ Here you are Russ, here are five bona-fide awesome records that have been neglected to varying degrees and for varying reasons, but played together would represent 10-15 mins of top drawer US dance Soul! BOBBY SHEEN - WARNER - 'I may not be the one you want' - How this has never attracted more plays is beyond me. A beautiful, lilting mid-tempo tune that screams soulful quality from every second of every groove. Is it superior to the topside? It runs it a very close second if it is not....And it should be played far more often! MISS MADELINE - MARVELUS - 'Behave Yourself' - Oh boy what a record, gloriously youthful vocals aching young love and desire, fantastic backing track, magical vibes, vivid dance breaks and chug, chug sing-a-long traditional northern chorus line to top it all off. Top class production and totally neglected as far as I know. Never heard it played once but it's pace is perfect for today and ought to be enormous.... PAULINE SHIVERS - OPEX - 'Wont you come back home' - Utterly stupendous femme 6ts which ought to be in everybody's all time top 50 and sits much higher than that in my personal ratings. A mystery artist with a fantastic vocal range, well exhibited on this aching midtempo homage to lost love. A gorgeous melody, great production and again another record that should be massive today given it's pace, atmosphere and sheer musical quality. Only the northern scene can discover and neglect such wonderful records whilst championing so much mediocre shite! FANTASTIC FOUR - RIC TIC - 'As long as I live' - As Widd once said to me, the type of record that would be a thousand pounds if it was on some rare, obscure label...Magical, melting mid-paced Detroit at it's finest with 'Sweet' JAMES delivering a killer lead vocal over a sweeping, melodic backing track that brings tears to your eyes after a few late night JACK D'S! A well known record dealer currently offering one of these has descibed it as 'good detroit group soul'. Actually, if you like your northern on the midtempo and melodic side, this is a momentous record that pisses all over some of the big priced rarities in terms of soulful, musical quality. A1 Northern Soul for the real freaks! ARTHUR CONLEY - ATLANTIC - 'Put our love together' - A record that has passed an enormous amount of people by over the decades. I have been amazed by the amount of people who have never heard this and that includes some guys with huge knowledge. This is just pure soul beauty....Sounding more like Detroit than Memphis, Arthur croons his way through another deliciously melodic midtempo stepper that stops you in your tracks if you've never heard it before. I played it on a tape to Guy Cooch at five in the morning at Cleethorpes last year his reaction being ' I might be pissed Rich, but that sounds like it is one of the best soul records ever made!' Ten plays later and he was still standing by that, although my Missus then emerged and was not so enamoured being she's heard it a thousand times at home already! Again, this tune has probably missed out because of it's sheer availability, but it's time somebody picked up on it... Rich Chorley
Tricky Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Dells - Show me Mandells - How to love a woman Dave Hamilton - Shoop doop Brenda Parker - Help me find mr good man Delilah Moore - I,ll just walk away
