Guest Krissii Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 its all good, i cant believe RS's WHOLE last wigan set is on the player... thank you for pointing me in the right direction! all we need is some proper video footage now instead of slow motion spinning
grant Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 its all good, i cant believe RS's WHOLE last wigan set is on the player... thank you for pointing me in the right direction! all we need is some proper video footage now instead of slow motion spinning the gary rushbrooke recording on here from '81 is pretty good as far as audio quality goes, as the recorders we had in them days were crap most wigan and stafford niter stuff from tapes is usually unlistenable
Guest Krissii Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 at least some exist though... i didnt realise until today that there were any... absolutely love the Gary Rushbrooke tape though the 70s RS one is really good too, real insight into how it really was instead of how compilations make out it was ktf
Guest ralfmouf Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 QUOTE (purist @ Jun 4 09, 12:10 AM) I vaguely remember something that I think Richard played that I loved dancing to. Now over the years my memory has faded so can some less forgetful soul help me out? It was called something like " Space Age Lover" or "Automatic Lover" or " Space Age Automatic Lover" you get my drift. He may have credited it to Bill Brandon, but just as likely I'm wrong on that also. I bought Bill " Space Lady" in the hope that this was what it was, but It wasn't the right tune. I bought quite a few Bill Brandon/Sam dees tunes over the years in the vague hope they might get me closer to the answer, they didn't, but they were all good records so no harm done there. Please somebody, HELP !!!!! If you don't know the identity but remember the tune please shout up, so I know I haven't gone bonkers ! think it was an acetate only that he played along with the cleveland eaton thingy "quazar one" both top tunes mate.
Guest ralfmouf Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Yes M8 u are nearly correct it was "Space Age Lover" by Bill Brandon but was on a demo lp only never released I too am after the same track, heard it @ the clifton halls in rotherham in the 80's & i quote the dj saying " this will be a biggie in the coming months" but never heard a thing since then ... I do have a sound byte of the trk if you want to confirm your still after it i can send you the bit i got ..... RALF alf@soulfans.co.uk
hullsoul Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Can't believe Chandlers & George Kirby haven't been mentioned? Can't remember what the Chandlers C/U was? But George Kirby was never C/U as Richard came to Hull to dj at 21st birthday party & he'd just got George Kirby & not had time to cover it up & we all jumped on stage to see what his new sound was.So knowing what gob shites us Hull lot were he didn't bother covering it up What about one of his finest..........Spyder Turner & The Webs which of course was John & The Weirdest, both sides. Got a tape with him playing it for the first time & it's dated February 1980?? Cheers Martyn

A living LEGEND who's contribution to Rare Soul is unquestionable....................so one question WTF re - issue THE EPITOME OF SOUND "You don't love me" c/w "Where were you" RUBY ANDREWS "Just loving you" MEL BRITT "She'll come running back" A man of RS standing & knowledge not to mention his connections, could rival Kent in the fantastic releases department with his new label, 3 battered oldies that are all available else where, very, very disappointed indeed, it could have been soooooooooooooooo much better, please try harder & dig deeper, RS must know/have some amazing unissued material or at least extremely under exposed that we would all be going mental to owjn if reissued, so why these three has beens . Russ

Russ Was thinking exactly the same Russ when I followed the link Dave put up to Richard's Blog. Maybe just lazy and going for the reborn-oldies/wannabe DJ crowd. Either way could do better. No disrespect intended. Maybe he will make enough to finance something a bit riskier? Pete
Guest DeeJay Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 QUOTE (Awake 502 @ Jun 2 09, 04:39 PM) Cecil Washington Spyder Turner and the Webs, both sides ( John & Weirdest ) Court Davies Betty Boo Eddie Holman both sides... Little Ann etc etc....... So many fantastic sides from the last few years of the Casino, and then there were all the recent new issue stuff being played, a great time... Without doubt '78 to '81 Was a fantastic time to be at the Casino - So many GREAT new SOUL discoveries from the 60s/70s and the new 80s Modern Soul items of the day - Tremendous stuff!! Sad thing was that some Saturday nighters especially after the Friday Oldies niters the attendances got to be as low as a couple of hundred. Regards Dave. Yesbut Rastus, you were only peddling choons, you werent exactly out there giving it what for on the dance floor, apart from when the odd Brice Coffield track came on;)

The Animal Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Not sure if Richard Searling was responsible for discovering many of the aforementioned records. I'm sure William Powell was discovered by Arthur Fenn on a trip to the States. I thought records were "discovered" by people trawling through Record shops, Warehouses, Vaults etc.... People like John Anderson discovered records and sold them to the big DJ's and collectors. This is not intended to take anything away from Richard Searling and his immense contribution to the soul scene. He is in my top 5 DJ's of all time and was a genius at cover up names and titles. He also seemed to know when it was just the right time to break a new track even though he may have had it for some time. However, to be factually correct, I think he was responsible for breaking a lot of big records discovered by other people.

Guest soulmaguk Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 were all richards 79-81 plays all from original vynil or acetates from his source??? ie court davis ,,william powell? etc Saw him play at Newquay this Autunm, sure Cecil Washington, Vickie Baines were Acetates, someone remarked upon the exact same hissing on the tracks as he played at the Casino as i remember. The track he played that had some people talking at Newquay was Lawrence & Jaibi - You Make Me Feel Good. Previously unisued 1967 GWP. Its on Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol 4.

Monkey Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Court Davis (Herbie Williams) Eddie Day Guess who loves you ...he would often play these two back to back Ernestine Eady Let's talk it over (Dee Dee Gartrell) Larry Clinton Damon Fox William Powell (Bobby Jason) Little Ann (Rose Valentine) Cecil Washington Vivian Carol on Merben The CODs (the chessmen) Executive 4 (Robert L Martin) Jackey Beavers I need my baby Al Williams and Lester Tipton on LA Beat Don Gardener Cheating Kind ... remember the night he sold it ... possibly deemed surplus to requirements! the list goes on and on, fantastic records and all over the period of about 3 years, most considered newies at the time and most exclusive to Richard in the first instance ... mind blowing. With regards acetates he did have the actual vinyl of most but definitely had some of his tracks cut to multi track acetate. The likes of Eddie Holman and Little Ann etc. were either the original acetate or acetates made from unreleased tapes, perhaps someone knows which?

'kinell, I was just gonna mention Cecil Washington, Mr Soul and Larry Houston off the top of my herad then I read that list. That's a roll call of excellence! Phenomenal tunage, good ol' Dickie.
Douglas Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Damon Fox and William Powell were first spun by Soul Sam i believe, covered up respectively as Don Parker and Bobby Jason. Sam swapped these two to Searling for Z.Z and Co. - Getting Ready For The Getdown and Larry Houston - Lets spend some time together.

Your right I vaguely remember that now and thinking at the time Sam must have been mad to swap those two. I was remembering Richard's set, banging out William Powell and Damon Fox and think of them as part of his legacy.
Douglas Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Richard definitely got the best deal, William Powell always goes for a few grand when it comes up for sale,i was never a big fan of Z.Z & Co and Larry Houston is easy to come by. My personal favourite Searling/Anderson discoveries are Cecil Washington,Court Davis and Judy Hughes.
Billywhizz Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I swear it was R.S first played gone with the wind at wigan, or was it soul Sam. Cheers Billy:yes:

Agentsmith Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Yes Billy one of Richards...................first played as "The Velvelettes " "My Love Is Gone With The Wind" Cheers Paul CORRECTION MATE,.....THE VELVETS gobsmacked to find out it was rita graham on vocals even though she had nothing directly to do with the group. cecil washington without doubt one of richard's best....hairs on the back of the neck stuff...detroit with attitude!
Soulman Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Many of Richard's "discoveries" were in fact discovered by John Anderson of Soul Bowl and then leaked to Richard to gain maximum exposure. Court Davis has to be a favourite along with Al Scott "What Happened To Yesterday". Superb stuff. However, does anyone remember the phase that Richard went through where he covered things up using cartoon characters? Phantom Janitor (from Hong Kong Phooey)... Top Cat (Larry Houston) etc etc and who could forget (not cartoon related) James Mack & the Chicago Gangsters (Roy Dawson - Over The Top). And what about the time he played Holly St James for the first time at the Casino. I was there and even went up and asked him what it was because he really panicked as it cleared the floor. Don't even think he covered it up but look at that tune now... what a floor filler and what a DJ. Probably the most influential ever IMO of course. (Stick the tenner in the post Richard)
