Did not he play the royal esquires"aint gonna run" on prix - covered up back in the 70s (playing the part of a fool or something) this went on to be BIG BIG BIG Now we all have a copy in our boxes !!! And Its still a fantastic record and always will be IMO Surely this has got to be one of his most significant discovery's spanning decades covered up and eventually being available to everyone ? I played it at home the other day - not having heard it for a while - with an open mind ! Its fecking brilliant ! Edited June 2, 2009 by mossy
Supercorsa Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Did not he play the 5 royals "aint gonna run" on prix - Or do you mean the Royal Esquires? Its fecking brilliant !
Petebangor Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 He covered it as The Embers-Playing The Part Of A Fool. The last couple of years of Wigan, where he was playing quality 60's right next to new releases in the same set, were the best musically IMO.

Dynamic Deadbeats seems to sum up the spirit of that time very well. Cecil Washington for me though.

Full of good tunes, Court Davies and Cecil Washinton on it I think... Jayne.x Edited June 2, 2009 by Miss BurySoul

The Michelles (Dee Dee Barnes) was suprisingly a Russ c/u . I didn't find out who it was until I started collecting Arctic and by then couldn't remember the c/u artists name just recall badgering Russ at the time (early '78ish?) to find me a copy or give me a clue who it was every time he played it.
Theresa Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I'm Under Your Spell - Mind & Matter, c/u as Merlin & the Magicians. I know I'm a disco dolly at heart, but hadn't heard this for years until heard it played out at a nighter recently and it sounded brilliant.

Sad thing was that some Saturday nighters especially after the Friday Oldies niters the attendances got to be as low as a couple of hundred. Regards Dave.

Dont think Cecil Washington is on that LP. Might have a look one day and see whats there. I know i gave some early British motown LP,s to a mate last year but cant remember what else was there. Steve
Baz Atkinson Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Too many to mention really ie in cover up names - the one he used to play for the aycliiffe crowd at the time was Eddie Jefferson wont think twice no explaining needed on that point.Daves right 78-81 was awesome imo so much every week from Richard,Sam,Pat[pure soul band]and Dave himself was a wonderful time and great memories.Hard to believe its 31 years ago, what is TRUE is how many of these tunes have stood the test of time in both rarity and quality, well never see times like that again!!! Sorry if I'm drifting off thread topic, just responding to questions on thread: Jayne - Don't think it's expensive but then again I've not been looking for one, it can always shock me what has become rare over the years, wouldn't think it's that rare though. soulsalmon - I don't remember if Chris had a hand in these. Are you confusing them with his "Triangle Connoisseur Sounds - The Motown Hitsville Masters"? I never saw volume 2, I have vol 1 that has Marvin Gaye's Lonley Lover on. I know Chris had a big hand in those but it was several years later. Like the "All Night Long" album the labels are white blank paper, no attempt at design. Edited June 3, 2009 by Dean

purist Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I vaguely remember something that I think Richard played that I loved dancing to. Now over the years my memory has faded so can some less forgetful soul help me out? It was called something like " Space Age Lover" or "Automatic Lover" or " Space Age Automatic Lover" you get my drift. He may have credited it to Bill Brandon, but just as likely I'm wrong on that also. I bought Bill " Space Lady" in the hope that this was what it was, but It wasn't the right tune. I bought quite a few Bill Brandon/Sam dees tunes over the years in the vague hope they might get me closer to the answer, they didn't, but they were all good records so no harm done there. Please somebody, HELP !!!!! If you don't know the identity but remember the tune please shout up, so I know I haven't gone bonkers !
John Benson Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 No you haven't gone bonkers Space age lover - click here Read the above Soul Source link from 2006
Dave Raistrick Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Discovered at wigan maybe, made big at clifton hall deffo Played at Wigan....but maybe not discovered at Wigan! Right, Clifton Hall, Rotherham played a HUGE part in pushing the scene forward and mixing the styles and tunes that worked at the time...Daybreak, The Escorts, Jewel, Leon Bryant alongside most of the BIG 60s discoveries of the day - A Wonderful period. I'd love to hear it again, even half the track, or a dodgy live venue recording, just to remind myself. Am I about right date wise for this thread, or was it earlier?
John Benson Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 (edited) Bill Brandon - I'd say it was in the region 1979 to 1980 when I seem to recall it getting spins. I've no idea where you might hear it though... I suppose you've already checked on Refosoul? Edited June 4, 2009 by John Benson
