Yeah I know they're all played out oldies.

But, just for a laugh lets poll the definitive northern soul record.

The record that encompassed and epitomised the time.

Feel free to add your own suggestion. Its only supposed to be a bit of fun.

If anybody wants to post a pre 85 poll, please crack on.

I can't comment post '85 as I was on a break....

Possibly the only other real contender IMO is 'Too Late' W & W.

Certainly not any of the three listed. And most defintely never Frank Wilson, the most hyped record ever.

refuse to take part in this poll what about records such as suspision,mr soul, bari track, dena barns the list is endless and there must have been so many records 'broke' 79-85 that have made much bigger impact and still are more definative than the above IMHO but as i wasnt there it dont really matter

I would refer the honourable member for Rushden, Northants to the statement made earlier in the debate -"Its only supposed to be a bit of fun"

The poll was a retrospective and fond look at some records that most of us enjoyed at the time.

It wasn't meant to be an opportunity for the self-righteous to hijack it with high minded and overly negative comments.

My favourite Northern record is Dena Barnes and has been since the first time I heard it thirty years ago and thought it was called "Teardrops and Heartaches" !

The next hundred or thousand swop positions all the time but that will always be my #1 !

HI ALL,

Started going to the Wheel at 16. 37 years ago, when the majic of American

Imports were still to come. The first, must have record from the Wheel for me was.

AT THE DISCOTHEQUE by CHUBBY CHECKER, closely followed by JUST A LITTLE MISUNDERSTANDING by THE CONTOURS. The record that stands out for me the most was a favourite sound at the Wheel, Torch, Up The Junction, Metro and

Blue Orchid. CHAINS OF LOVE - CHUCK JACKSON

Come go with Me - Gloria Jones

dynamite soul

On second thoughts Jack Montgomery Baby take a chance on me........first heard this at The Museum of soul in Leeds around 1971, played by Swish.

Anyone still see Swish, I saw him at Casino in August 1975, the last Allnighter I ever went to, Swish was not a hap well man at the time, his eyesight was failing, does anyone see him, tell him paul from Luton has asked after him.

At The Torch Reunion , Swish proved still how good and creditable a DJ he is , by playing this wonderful tune alongside the others in his spot .

When he played it , the hairs on the back of my neck and arms stood uo , and I had goosepimples ....... and it was 1972 all over again .

Debbie l think he's joking,love

Did you ever watch The Love Boat?

No I'm not, it was always the last tune played at the Mecca, all the lights would come on, we'd all

huddle about in groups seeing where we'd be going to next and this would be playing, I kid thee not.

Well if it was having to describe what northern soul was to a complete novice - no contest really - PAUL ANKER - CAN'T HELP LOVING YOU

The beat is so spot on its scary, string, arrangement, dancers love it, and the best thing is its a WHITE GUY singing it......Remember northern is a beat which is why at least %10 is from white artists. IMHO!!

Despite The Mecca musically progressing , " CM " was always the record played at the end of the night .

Whenever I hear it , it always evokes memories of the halcyon days of The Mecca .
