i actually do have respect for Ian and what he has done ....however , i ask again , that show was meant to be a MOD show so what relevance does Ian have to the MOD scene ?

I didn't know he played any carvers for sure but when listening I did think the Parliaments sounded muffled compared to rest of playlist. Was it a carver then James?

And Margie Singleton Ian said was unreleased and yet on a previous thread I think you and Chalky said you'd been playing it or at least already knew it. Is it unreleased?

On the carvers, Levine was playing them at Crossfire, that's a fact. There were at least 3 in the first hour of this BBC 6 thing he just did which were bootlegs/carvers, or were they mp3 cuts? Have another listen back, it could be another 'hang man' type game we could play, like "guess the unknown northern soul monster discovery" but this is "Guess the carver".

I wonder if he played the Parliaments off an MP3 that was pulled from this site? That one sounded particularly rough. Very sad having to play records other people have made big after his boasts about the '400 great unknown monster northern soul records in a special box'.

I guess some folk still need their idols to believe in. Keep the faith, people :thumbsup:

I don't think it's meant to be a dick measuring contest, I presume he was told to do a 2 hour show which will entertain the listeners so he can play what he wants basically, doesn't matter who discovered it or where it came from as long as the audience enjoy it - and out of that audience of, say, 100,000, there's 3 of you listening out to see if he's playing a carver, which is very sad really.

has anyone got any more info on that unreleased contours record cant fight the feeling?? cellarful of motown vol 4 anyone??

Think that sounds like the unreleased Contours I've been playing two or three years....I first played it at Lifeline and one of the Skeggy Weekenders. Karl Heard been playing it as well, John Poole too, if it's the same one.

Hey, I hope you're not including me in that. Didn't expect him to play carvers and only replied to James that I thought Parliaments sounded muffled compared to the rest of the stuff.

I think in the context of the argument on SS between Ian and James, There was no sign of the 400 or whatever "newies". There was nothing new 60's wise to me and even though I know bugger-all about 70's only Impact, James Lovejoy and Latimore track were new too.

You may be right that Ian didn't set out to showcase all new stuff but if I'd been at loggerheads with James and others I certainly would have done.

That spot in a club with the odd tweak woulda suited me down to the ground. I think it came well within James' reflections on the current scene where there is no oldies V. Newies but just good records delivered by enthusiastic and passionate djs.

Despite a certain faction desperately wanting it to be otherwise , it would appear that the show has been given the seal of approval in respect of credibility , by those SS members who listened purely and simply for the music , and more so , who listened to it without predudice .

Not a bad show for the BBC. Alas James Lovjoy was a disappointment and the Parliaments sounded very low kps

Thanks me old china, the show was accessible to "foreigners"..

Thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the show, some really superb choices, ( except James Lovejoy ) but after the Exciters; which I still love hearing, as part of my(our) youth , it really did remind me of why I find it difficult to connect Ian Levine the innovative DJ with the producer of the same name... Some very dull ones and really nothing to get at all excited about.

And why did he have to mention Boyzone and all that utter boyband drivel FF sake ? HIGH NRG !! NO ! ohmy.gif

And I am DEFINITELY NOT feeding/backing JT's anti Levine camapign by the way, just a personal view in case I could be any way connected :rolleyes:

Sorry, but I am one of those peeps that absolutely LOVE TO BITS this 45. Ady used to play this at the 100 club I believe and also Spaghetti Weston has also been playing it more recently. I think Martha Star's stuff on Thelma is great also. Unfortunately Sweet Temptation is a rarity on Charay and very highly prized and priced accordingly. So no real chance of owning it. However, I have a version by Cressa Watson on a compilation album, which is the same; apart from the instrumental break in the middle being missing. Each to their own.

thanks, for the tape of a record to be found on the floor of the woodward building in detroit it really needs releasing to the masses, I thought I was well past the stage of walking around and mumbling ....need it......got to have it...... i wonder how much

you didnt put it up on refosoul about 12 month back Chalky?? I seem to rembember a few soulies going into raptures then

no that was Hitsville Chalky. The one in refosoul is the same as Ian's with the digital beeps in it, its the same on most cd's kicking around with it on.

Just my opinion, love Martha usually and this is a good track but it doesn't give me the "tingle" "WOW" factor even if God himself was playing it or however much it is worth.

Not that I know of, i did pick up a 10" acetate of it years later but it's the same version.

PS I'd love to find Sharon Scott, if anyone has any clues.

He's a liar, he's a fake and he's a glory hunting ego maniac who's out of touch and out of date.

It's great, Ady. What a wonderful way of representing this music to the nation. Brilliant.

Ian was the only one who had the track. The intro was completely destroyed and the entire track had 'bleeps' over it. They recreated the intro from the middle section and got a sound expert in to do equalisation to remove the beeps. So WE is Levine, his producer and a sound angineer.

Levine then played it at the Rocket and put it on the Rocket Rarities cd which was given away free. Anyone else who has played it has taken it from that original source, which was Ian Levine's.

So he's not a liar...and you're wrong to try and show him up for this one.

I don't know and I have no opinion on that really, though he did play me 6 or 7 records down the phone the other day (which I duly noted down and found one within seconds, a second one I found but it was too expensive so already known couldn't find the other 4 or 5)... but I had to say something about The Originals thing because no-one would have ever heard it had it not been for Ian.

I'll see if I can get him to record me a cd of some of these unknowns and what he does know is that I will say it's good if it's good and it's crap if it's crap.

Then maybe I could post some up or do a podcast????

Just listened to the first hour and thought it a great selection of marvellous enjoyable music which I'll be recording and playing again, and again when I feel like it.

I don't generally get in to the bollotics of the soul music scene, each to there own as to music, personalities etc etc. Can't be arsed with it and I've no axe to grind with anyone. I enjoy my soul and people as they appeal to me and tend to stay away from those that don't. I have my own view of Levine's personality but credit where credit is due the guy had an immeasurable impact on the scene. Many of his productions don't do it for me but for me the first hour shows what great taste he's still got (my opinion).

Yeah, he can get on my tits with the "I am" "I was" blah, blah. However, Levine is, apart from being a lover of soul music, a business man who in the real world needs to make money. No-one ever made money by dumbing themselves down so I can live with the bigging it up of either himself or his productions.

James Lovejoy?????? For me a very good backing that sadly was let down by the vocal.

I heard the Smile by Impact for the first time via his show, manged to get one Sunday for next to nowt...so for that alone thank you.

Yeah fantastic, playing other people's discoveries off bootlegs while he boasts of having a box of "400 great and unknown monster northern soul", good stuff.

I especially liked the part where he talked about the unreleased things being 'rescued off the floor by his friend' and then (I quote) "WE pieced them back together, and here they are!". But these are tracks people have been playing for YEARS, so how does that work?

He's a liar, he's a fake and he's a glory hunting ego maniac who's out of touch and out of date.

It's great, Ady. What a wonderful way of representing this music to the nation. Brilliant.

But if he was playing other people's discoveries that's good that he's not being ego-centric because he could have easily filled the time in just playing his own discoveries, let alone his own productions and he didn't so I think that's a good thing.

He did it because all he's sat on is a pile of 80000 shtters, an empty 400 count box and hundreds of dead duck productions that nobody wants to hear, let alone buy.

ten minutes in to the second hour and still no duffers say what you like but the exciters was a classic of its time and the 4 vandals is an amazing 60s sounding record produced in the 80s

I'm not posting this to contribute to any Ian Levine slagfest but this Four Vandals recording puzzles me. I'm not saying it's good or bad - that's a matter of personal opinion (I happen not to like it, others do and that's their choice). What has puzzled me from day one is people thinking it sounds like it was recorded in the 60s. Frankly, they cannot be very discerning. Whilst it is done in a vaguely 60s style, how anyone with half an ear for a tune think it ever sounded like an actual 60s recording is beyond me. First time I heard it (at a do in Cheltenham, I think) I thought people were having a laugh and it was a wind-up. Then, when the penny dropped and it was clear these people actually believed it to be a 60s original...........................in all honesty, I felt embarrassed for them ............... unsure.gif:yes::D:D:)

Im not here for a Levine slagfest , but I am interested in these 400 OG unknowns ? A false start on the J Lovjoy but hopefully plenty more to come ?
