Motown Chartbusters Vol 3. Not a bad track on it and the sleeve is divine!

Close to perfection - for the tracks included and the vibe of the time when it was first released. The age of innocence was ending.

3. My Cherie Amour - Stevie Wonder

4. This Old Heart Of Mine - The Isley Brothers

7. I'm In A Different World - The Four Tops

8. Dancing In The Street - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

9. For Once In My Life - Stevie Wonder

10. You're All I Need To Get By - Tammi Terrell & Marvin Gaye

11. Get Ready - The Temptations

12. Stop Her On The Sight (S.O.S) - Edwin Starr

13. Love Child - Diana Ross & The Supremes

14. Behind A Painted Smile - The Isley Brothers

15. Road Runner - Jr. Walker & The All Stars

16. The Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

It's hard to argue with any of the choices mentioned so far in the topic: I think I own every one!

The albums that have sustained me through decades are:

The Poet I by Bobby Womack (even though it's probably not his best work it's the album which got me into all of this as a current release and side two is just masterly. "If You Think You're Lonely Now" has rightfully become the anthem of soul music from the 80s);

The Many Grooves of Barbara Lewis (so complete and so beautifully put together);

Here To Stay by Darrell Banks (soul perfection from every conceivable angle);

Send My Baby Back by Freddie Hughes (a virtuoso singer's one shot at fame, still cruelly under-rated);

Friction by The Soul Children (a sumptuous and adult work, to me the very pinnacle of Southern Soul as a commercial artform);

Hold On by Tommy Tate (one of soul's greatest ever artists at his creative peak);

and last but not least,

Terry Callier's monumental What Color Is Love (still impossible for me to listen to "Dancing Girl" and not be mesmerised and moved by it).

Got to agree with most of those selections. I think I still know every lyric and line from Caught Up and Still caught Up. I remember buying Still Caught Up as a new import from the Contempo store ...only for my sister to wear it out within months.

And Roy C was unique.

Signs of another misspent youth there, Kev.

I still play most of those albums on a regular basis - and others such as Laura Lee's Hot Wax albums and Freda Payne's Contact album on Invictus.

A hell of a lot of pleasure for the price of a few school dinner tickets all those years ago ...no wonder we were all so skinny. :rolleyes:

Best wishes,

Another great selection, Adam - especially Garland Green, Jackie Wilson and Sam Dees.

I only wish Anette Snell had cut an album with Paul Kelly for Dial. It would have been a monster. But that's an idea for an another thread ...favourite albums which don't exist. :rolleyes:

I still love those Don Covay albums. 'Leave Him' is a masterpiece. Like Roy C, he had a style all of his own.

I rarely play the Don Covay albums from start to finish these days, but as you say Paul, tracks like "Leave Him" and "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" are truly exceptional pieces of soul music from a master craftsman and a true original. Ask Mick Jagger.

One I forgot to mention is Jimmy Lewis's "Totally Involved". Strangely I've never really played side two from start to finish that much but consider side one to be as good a twenty minutes by a single artist as ever committed to tape.

An artist who probably won't get much of a mention here that I keep going back to is Alicia Myers. Her three MCA albums stand up really well as cleanly produced, well written and exceptionally soulful: Detroit's last stand in the soul mainstream perhaps.

Posted

I also prefer albums to '45's , here's some of my faves :

With love from - The Lovelites [ UNI ]

Too many people in one bed - Sandra Phillips [ Special Agent UK ]

This is - Eleanore Mills [ Astroscope ]

The Poet 2 - Bobby Womack [ Beverly Glen ]

This close to you - Luther [ Cotillion ]

Detroit Spinners on Atlantic [ Ist album ]

Jealous kind of fellow - Garland Green [ UNI ]

Songs of the big city - Clyde McPhatter [ Mercury ]

Whispers - Jackie Wilson [ Brunswick ]

I'm gonna miss you - Artistics [ Brunswick ]

An album full of Soul [ Stateside various ]

Sweetest thing this side of heaven - Chris Bartley [Vando ]

Put your tears away - Jackie Edwards [ Island ]

Soulful Road - New York City [Chelsea ]

And lots of the choices made already , great thread !! Best ,Eddie

A beautiful album Gareth and Dancing Girl is indeed a moving, unique piece of music (and I think a brave choice for an opening track).

I always go back to Otis' Pain In My Heart LP - the disc that got me into all this in the first place.
