Instumentals being classed as soul has never really sat with me very well, but as part of a dance or overall genre they can be great.

I've always loved Scrub-Board by the Trammps.

Not northern, but I don't think you can get better than Fred Wesley & The JB's - Blow You Head

Like I said, I hate instrumentals but this tune is far too good for vocals!

Ronnie n Robin - Sidras theme, the snare drum on every beat with the simple 2 beat fills does it for me. great tune

Love instrumentals and will always play one or two when DJing (any more than that can get stale). Many favourites over the years but two that I'm currently playing are:

Matta Baby - Do The Pearl Girl

Subway Riders - After The Session

Are they as popular as they used to be? No.

I don't generally like to hear instrumental versions of a good vocal record - one that really springs to mind is the instrumental version of Mickey Lee Lane - He Sha Lo Ney.

I do like good instrumentals in their own right though & 2 of my favourites are-

Green Onions - Booker T & The MGs - been a favourite of mine for about 25 years & still gives me a tingle when I hear it

Detroit City Limits - 98 cents plus tax - pure, seemingly effortless, quality

Ihave only been a member of SOUL-SOURCE justa few months and here we go again? so I have limited it to a instrumentle that I got first on a europian LP of KIETH MANSFIELD & HIS ORCHESTA 1st things 1st I highley recomend his LP a must buy, 2nd the CLASS INSTUMENTAL on the Album :- BOOGALOO its absulutly brill, 9 months ago my mate jim and myaelf were talking about the LP and the ex trax on it, he informed me 1 of the LPs trax come out on CBS in 68 in the UK...called SOUL CONFUSION iI informed him although I had not got it I nwe of its exsistance, he then told me he had a copy of BOOGALOOAS a US 45.this I clearly did not no, I now have a copy and its has become one of my favourate INSTRUMENTAS of all time? South like West .. Johnny Guitar Watson, Fi Yi Dance.. Soulful Two, Johnny Mirage .. New love inst.( fantastic John Vincent play from the Fleet days.

Instru-MENTALS need to be back in vogue, not enough played thesedays IMO.
