For several years now i have had in my collection a copy of

WHIRLPOOL----MARVELOUS RAY----U.S ABNER

The record has some like plaster stickers on the TEARS side with the initaials R.J or R.S.The only thing i have been told about this record is that it was part of Richard searlings late casino playlist, but i have not heard it played out anywhere in the last 10 years.I really like the track can anyone tell me owt about it and is it desirable/valueable

Cheers--PATTO

She is from Cleveland, and Marvelous Ray is her real name! She cut several 45s for the Cleveland Abner label (not related to any other Abner labels), backed by Billy Wells' band (the guitar playing Billy Wells who had the 45s on Shaker, Sweet Soul, etc). This record turns up from time to time. A slightly different (don't remember how) version was issued on CD.

Thanks Maria fantastic info there.Think the track is a perfect dancer for today should get more plays. Thanks again for your help

Sold a vg+ copy a few months back for £125 if that helps at all. IMO it's almost a brilliant record but just lacks a real change of pace or break that would really elevate it to a top, top dancer.

Yeh Know what you mean it does just need that bit of a boost to make it a cracker, guess thats what Max is trying with the up-pitch.Still think it would be great mid nighter which is maybe how searling saw it.Thanks for the price info mine is a VG+ also

You are right. It was definitely covered as Baby Washington Harry, I posted up a Casino tape from the 7th anniversary where Richard plays it, absolutely fantastic record. I must have had 6 copies of this, always bought it for myself but ended up selling it. That version on the cd is identical as far as I can tell, though there is also an intrumental version of it. And I agree with Tim, doesn't need pitching up.

A lady came up to me at York Soul Club a while back and said how much she enjoyed me playing Baby Washington's "Tired Of Running Round In Circles". I said that it must have been the next DJ because I didn't play anything by her.

The conversation went back and forth for a bit and I could tell my arguing was frustrating her, because she was so sure of herself and even knew which songs it fell between.

...It was then that it dawned on me what it was and that it might have been covered up, so I quickly checked nearby and then said back to her:

" I'm so sorry - I'm foreign, so I only know my records by their real names" .

(She didn't seem to believe me when I explained, so I grabbed an English man to confirm what it was called.) ....Anyway, it made me laugh.

Each to their own, but I'm not a big fan of changing pitch, although I have dabbled. Even a bit feels like you may as well put it on your computer and make a remix. It's almost like cheating to make a record liked more -playbox desperation perhaps?

...besides, there's something pure about playing a record the way it was intended.

Pretty sure Marvelous Ray said that it isn't Pat Smith but her vocal on the unissued one.
