Off you go. The Alfie Davison 12" Curtis 12 Both spring to mind but are you asking for sounds that came out on 12" only as this would make them rarer with no seven available.

Just 12" 'Holy Grails'. Don't matter if they got a 7" release as the 12" is normally a different mix anyway. Good call on the Alfie Davison, far better version IMO but wouldn't call Curtis a holy grail as not that rare.

Soul Shrews Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 What was the first 12" single...Was it Daddy Cool by Boney M? Nah............................... it was "Ten Percent" by Double Exsposure (Salsoul) Dunno 'bout "holy grail" 12s ...............but my "dream" 12 would be Charles Johnson "Never Had A L ove So Good"........y'know during the fade when he really starts singing ? Another couple of minutes of that pleases Cheers Paul

Ste Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 not sure if its rare but been after one for years with no success Chamberlain - Tease ( C.E.C. ) saw it on a playlist years ago so assume it exists, think Steve Davis played it on his show from 12" as well. steve Just read the excellent UK holy grail thread & then saw this on e bay. https://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-MODERN-SOUL-BOOGI...7QQcmdZViewItem Any more? John Reed Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 (edited) For me its Al Mason - Good Lovin' - Al & The Kidd Hotliners - Cold Hearted - Budweiser Also quite intrigued about Wes Black - I Feel Good (Feeling Good) - Highland. Its twice as long as the 7" on Star West which states that its part 2, so what does part 1 sound like? Need the 12" to find out. I wonder if I'll Always Be In Love With You is longer as well? Bit offtopic: I understand the Alston/TK tapes are all accessable, has any record company shark ever tried to find out if they are tapes of the recording session of Charles Johnson?

SteveM Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Bill Brandon " Space age lover" Nah, not rare Simon. I got one of these off Soul Bowl's disco list for £1.25 in 1982 etc etc etc etc etc and Cunnie has a cd of a new remix by MC Trouble, which he played to me down the phone only yesterday. Plus its not on his wants list so it can't be that hard Seriously, I always loved this when Richard played it. Does he still have it ? If not, who does ? Can there be a 12 rarer than this ?

Guest Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Charles Johnson as a 12"?? What a great idea!! Charles Johnson was the first one that sprang to my mind. I saw one for sale recently, can't remember where... Manship's site? Neil Jones (BurySoul) might be the man to ask, he's got one of those, and a brainstorm 12" and the Eddie Holman track on 12' too (clear vinyl thing he's had since 1812 or something like that!) I remember Neil playing the brainstorm 12' at a golbourne nighter many years ago and then a few of them trying to dance all the way through it.... (was a good long while ago! ) Jayne.x.

But don't you think charles johnson and Mark VI sound so alike? I was thinking of Mark VI - if you can't tell me something good, which was the 12' purchased at birm. I'll get me coat! richardf Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 iv got a copy on miracle is that worth anything............cant stand it to be honest Not really It's not worth a great deal on Tabu to be honest, about 20 quid 12"s and 7"s are completely different markets There are some "holy grail" 12"s that are very common on 7": Brainstorm - We're on our way home, and Norman Connors - Once I've been there, are two. The Mark IV is a different mix to the 7" 12"s sound, sonically, much better than 7"s (and LP tracks), which is why they are generally more sought after from a DJ perspective. The Jackie Stoudemire is a great track BTW and has been "reissued" recently. I believe most of the TAP stuff goes for money. Quite a few 7"s have been "reissued" as 12"s, and I can't vouch for their authenticity, most noteably, The Gifted Four on Ham Sem, Family of Eve on Full Sail and recently the great Midnight Express on Tri Fire. I posted a while ago about a 12" release of SPG - loveland. Does any one have any info about this? I love 12"s Richard
Guest biggray1 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 The Jackie Stoudemire is a great track BTW and has been "reissued" recently. can anyone post info on this reissue please. Graham
richardf Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 On Numero Google it. It's probably generally available. Reissues 'spit'
Guest Awake 502 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 idris mohammad- heaven could be like this. always pricey on 12" for some reason. Really ? have a 12" demo of this somewhere didn't think it was that rare...
Sebastian Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 The Jackie Stoudemire is a great track BTW and has been "reissued" recently. can anyone post info on this reissue please. Graham Only the track "Invisible Wind" has been reissued on 12": https://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=00318 The rest of the tracks on her original TAP 12" along with a great unissued tune can be found on the TAP compilation CD/double-LP: https://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=00331 I personally prefer Arnie Love's version of "Invisible Wind", much better vocals and more punch compared to Jackie Stoudemire's version.
richardf Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I've seen both versions but never heard the Arnie Love. I just assumed (wrongly obviously) that they were different releases of the same record. There is another great Arnie Love record the name of which escapes me (also on tap I believe) As to who pays a lot for Independent 12"s? Well quite a few people it would seem. I've recently seen lots of 12"s go for what I would consider much more (up to twice in some cases) than their "book price". There is also a "healthy" (if that's the right word) market in "reissues" or bootlegs, some very convincing especially if buying from ebay, so beware. Threads like this make me realise how insular the rare soul scene can be and once you think you've got a bit of knowledge behind you, bang a load more different music appears. I love it Richard
