Being a Crewe (Shavington) lad, (latterley Northampton and then Kent) I 've always wondered about 'UTJ'S' origins, as I was only about 3 when it was going huh.gifhuh.gif .

All the other clubs get the limelight but I've always been curious about this little place on South St.

No one really has ever really mentioned it in detail, Who ran it? What was played? How long did it last? (About 12 months?) biggrin.png etc etc.

Would be nice to think my home town had some soul oomph shhh.gif

Thanx

HI,

I THINK IT WAS RUN BY THE GUY WHO RAN THE BEAU-BRUMMEL AT ALVESTON HALL IN NANTWICH ON A SUNDAY ,

WENT THERE QUITE A FEW TIMES ONE YEAR, USED TO BE A LOT FROM BRISTOL I SEEM TO REMEMBER,

MEMORIES NOT SO HOT BUT I THINK THEY PLAYED A FEW WILLIE MITCHELL 45s TO DEATH FOR A WHILE, THINK LABI SIFRE AND JOAN ARMATRADING APPEARED THERE,

EXPECT SOMEONE WILL HAVE A FULL HISTORY OF THE PLACE ON HERE SOON,

JOE.

May not be in the limelight much Jim but take it from me, it was one of the best Clubs around at the time, along with the Catacombs and the like.

I hope somebody comes up with the goods for you, I'd be interested too.

Daft this, but we were living about a mile away at the time and it's always been a constant annoyance to me I missed out! huh.gifbiggrin.png !! (As I was a bairn) told you it was daft.

It has tho', always been fascinating to me this place (it's a snooker club now) great to see those photos and flyers on t'other thread.
Perhaps a UTJ reunion opinion should be floated? I've always had a pervish interest in the lesser mentioned but equally important venues.

Regards

Frank wrote a book about his time "away" its called "in the shadow of papillion" by Frank kane and john tilsey (he helped frank put it together) is in smiths, ottackers, on amazon website, been published about a year now, did you not see him in paper or mags advertising it!! he was in nuts (yes namesake) and on radio, gotta come home an make a fuss aint he, our daughter wasnt to keen but shes ok with it all now. Frank was in the very famous prison that the film papillion was about!! he writes about all that he went though in the 8yrs he did, all true in fact had to cut some out cos it was too bad and couldnt name folk!!!! So get a copy matey, think its in library too if your skint!!haha and let me know what you think.

Would be nice to meet up so let me know tara abit Chris x
