Phil, with reference to my earlier post, if you haven't already looked on the above mentioned thread - please do................ Page 3 posted by Barry May on 27 November 2008 entitled "Bradford Queens Hall Flyer", which contains valued track listings, a Mass Order download and comments and thanks from Barry etc etc. Interesting reading indeed. Alison H Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 That Bratford refosoul is getting some hammer mate Yeah ! Ive just hammered it too but I couldnt work out how to turn the volume up. Not the same when you have to shuv your ears right up to the computer - I would give owt to be getting ready now for our fortnightly fix of Bradford oops I mean Bratford. I loved both rooms equally. I know not many would flit between the two but I did & I feel (imo) I got the best of both worlds. Ali x

That is awesome to listen to as now that Ive found out how to turn my volume up on here (I havent had this laptop long!) its great hearing people chatter & swear (still shit hot!!) in the background & remembering the atmosphere of the place. What date in 91 did you record it ? Ive just checked one of my many diaries & this weekend in 91, 18/5 to be precise good old Queens Hall was on. I dont think I missed any so Its freaky to think that 18 years ago when I was dancing away without a care in the world I would be listening & feeling the atmosphere of the exact night all over again sadly from the comfort of my own home this time but its still good & bizarre as well. How nice is that Steve Mancha song. It makes me want to cry but I wont. I guess you didnt like Sandpipers cos you certainly cut that one short Right thats me done, off to bed now (huh wouldnt have been saying that 18 years ago tonight!) I bet I was there as well...never missed if I could help it...wouldn't even go on holiday cos I'd have had to miss at least one...well never missed from the time I started but wasn't there from the beginning, more's the pity. As for diaries I've not got any of them...life was far too messy back then for any form of organisation...no pics either Wish I'd done some taping...I used to do that mind...made some tapes at Burnley Bank Hall Miners...still got em somewhere, hoarder that I am...none from Bradford though...my recorder had given up the ghost long before that and I never replaced it. I've still got the tapes that he used to bang out at Bradford. Seasons of a Dove etc. When you next see him or speak to him will you tell him the young lass from Leeds (well I was in those days!) that came round to his flat in Manchester with Derek Pearson & a few others many moons ago says a big hello & sends him her best wishes. Alison H Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Would l be right in saying that The Modern Room (as we know it) only lasted 6 months May-Nov 91 And one more in Jan 92.....? Best time l ever had!! Surely not ?? It must have gone on longer than that. Mind you if it was every two weeks at certain periods then I s'pose thats why it might have felt like it went on for years. Im with you on the best time I ever had and that does go for the whole of BQH - Upstairs & down. from 87 right through to 92 Nothing compares for me I'm afraid. Al x

richardf Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Was a Bradford regular between 89 and the end in 92 I believe Barry and Dave ran downstairs between early 91 and Jan 92. I thought it finished in Nov 91 but remember going after Christmas that year. Michael Watford - Holding On and a big Disco re edit thing on Lifeforce (I believe) being the big tunes of the time. ( I'll have a look for it later) Funny how your memory plays tricks on you. I remember it going fortnightly from monthly but can't remember when. I do know that in the first few weeks everybody (myself included) hated what was going on downstairs, but soon grew to love it, and it was indeed a life changing experience. I still see Barry regularly and Dave occasionally. Used to see Johnny Kerslake at Southport, but not for a while. Always bump into Geordie Bri and Alison there too. Saw Steve Croft in Chesterfield market a couple of years ago. the man was (is) a genius. Also used to love the playlists, usually featuring Phil on the front page. Chucked mine away years ago, and always regretted. Great days and always worth the trip up from London. Happy memories Richard

You won't see me anymore at Southport as I've well and truly retired. Can't remember the last time I was there. Must be my age and a menopausal thing I think I must have missed out on the first bit of Bradford cos I was off the scene raving and I didn't know about it til 90, maybe 91. I'd have been back like a shot if I'd known what I was missing Loved the playlists too, I also kept em, probs still got em in the bottom of old handbags somewhere in the attic/garage, cos that's a hoarder for you. I'd have travelled to the ends of the earth and back for Bradford, that's how much I loved it. Mind you you travelled far enough my lad Happy memories indeed...if I could just go back there one more time...I'd wanna go again
Guest Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Extremely Happy, and you are so right,l didn't understand downstairs and thought it was 'Too Ravey' but it wasn't it was just great contemporary Soul Music!! Crofty !! I would love to bump into him & his mum (I think she was called Betty) She was a real good sport staying up all night with us lot making sure we were all fed & watered. Aint seen him since Bradford closed which is a real shame. I did bump into his co-promoter Adrian (the quiet one with dark hair & glasses-he'll kill me for saying that) at Prestatyn a couple of years back and y'know somat the jammy bugger hasn't aged at all & is still a lovely guy. I think I chewed his ear off most of the night about how great BQH was & how we needed a re-union. Sadly I dont think the upstairs could facilitate a re-union as I believe there is a bar in the middle of the dancefloor (thinking about it that could be handy for some punters!). Im not sure what is going on downstairs (just like back then) so maybe there is a glimmer of hope if Crofty & Adrian ever read this read. I know people will think get over it & move on and believe me I have tried & altho I do have awesome nights at other places nothing quite does it for me like Bradford did. (I think I should change my name on here from Alison H to BQH Forever !!) It was good to see you again at Southport even if it was just as I was leaving ! Thats Southport for you ! Ann Nesby stole the show for me. Take care Richard & see you somewhere soon. Ali x (BQH Forever!!)
Alison H Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Don't know if its any help but posstot on here is actually Dave's brother and sees him on much too often a basis Which brother ?? I knew Paul,Jeff & Barry (I hope I have got all their names right) & there's another brother I think but as I only met him once and I cant recall his name. Aint seen any of them for ages. They did a stint of running the modern room at Winsford which was brilliant. Nice set of lads & Paul's wife Julie was such a lovely lady (hope they are still together). If posstot (ha ha trust one of them to have a name like that!) wants to remain annonymous will you pm me which one it is & I'll say hello to him. But in the meantime I'll say helloooo ! to all of them on here ! Naked Music Rules !!! Al x

Phil Johnny Kearsley is from Wigan married to the wonderful Sue (I cant remember Sue from Bradford but met her later at various soul nights/nighters). They still get out & about occasionally (last saw them in March at my birthday party ) but as they have become grandparents recently they are spending time at home with the family. You will definitely know him. He was as mad as you & .... still is Al x
richardf Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Ali Always nice to see you at Southport Adrian. I saw him at a soul night in Doncaster about 7 years ago. An unsung hero. The room at the top of the stairs, the best cup of tea at 5 in the morning that money could buy. Unfortunately I believe Steve's mother is no longer with us. Always knew Johnny as 'Johnny from Wigan'. I may have his surname spelt incorrectly. I apologise if I have.. Jill. Still banging on to Barry about On Hubert Street. one day!. The Queens Hall is now a Flares night club, or it was last time I was in Bradford. Crikey 5 yrs ago. I'll dig out the pics of it. Still remember being in there when Steve announced that David Ruffin had died and then played "Walk away from love" Memories eh. Phil, Just spoke to Barry, He sends his love. Richard
richardf Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Ali Sorry was on the phone between posts so apologies if I've duplicated some of what you've said
Guest Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Which brother ?? Al x The one your missing is Mike I used to knock around with all the Hawkins lads and lived at their house for a very short time Me and Mike ran the Soulful Shack in Culceth and are currently looking for a new venue, speak to him usually a couple of times a week Havent seen Paul (Jim) or Barry in years or Richard Connop that used to hang around with them but see Jeff occasionally and Dave usually round at Mikes or we have a game of golf once every so often Sure he would love to hear from you ATB Steve
Jill Bayles Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 (edited) Jill. Still banging on to Barry about On Hubert Street. one day!. I loved OHS...only other club I felt really at home at since Bradford...can't think why Didn't discover that place until very late on in it's life either...which is probably just as well or I'd probably have burned myself out there. And if I'd started going to Bradford earlier I definitely would never have completed my degree...I came out of temporary retirement to go there and boy oh boy am I glad I did. I read on here a while back that Barry was considering a Bradford Reunion but I'm not sure where that notion of his went to...that would be the bestest thing ever....just one more night to see if the magic is still there...and of course it would be. OHS-come-Bradford...nowt finer...I for one would be in heaven Think me and you should work our magic and see what we can come up with... Edited May 18, 2009 by Jill Bayles
Alison H Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Ali Sorry was on the phone between posts so apologies if I've duplicated some of what you've said No need to apologise you daft un! I know what you mean about surnames tho. People dont know that Im Lady Hamilton (well the people who read this thread will do now ). I must admit I thought your surname was Franklin for years so we all suffer from the surname syndrome - actually at times I suffer from the first name syndrome also . Aaaw Steve's mum was a real part of that night & I bet she is still missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Im signing off now as Im completely shattered - all the brilliant sound clips, the memories & this banter about what we got up to 18 years ago is as if I've been doing it all over again ..... only now I cant take the pace . So nite nite to my fellow BQH's Im off for some Al xxx
