Rob Wigley Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 i think garry churm deserves the fame, any stories to tell ? I've known him since i was 12, garry will be 48 in june but will swear he's only 39 ! A true and loyal suporter of the 60s scene he has attended most clubs often turning up in places you least expect to see him. To say he travels the length of the country and doesn't even drive is a magical feat. great memories travelling to wigan on the Bus and THE RAVEN in Wigan having a few pints before the Nighter. Most people know him so any stories--nothing slanderous please ! or the first time you met him ?
Simsy Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) You were serious about the GC thread! Seriously, why shouldn't you be all you say is true. He is a top bloke, very friendly. I met him at the 100 Club about ten years ago. I got postcards from'Robin Hood Country'. The titles of the tapes he's done for me over the year's are first class 'Northern Nightlife' and 'That Was The Beat That Was' amongst a few. There is no way this guy looks his age, can't believe he is nearly 50 He is one of the nicest blokes I know and one of my best friends on the scene. Mandy Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I know Gary Churm - none him for a long time When I was living in Manchester he came to stay one weekend - came up from Canterbury on the train/bus with just his work clothes on (teacher to boot!!) and proceeded to go to Lowton in them - came home - me driving he was very drunk and he snored all the way back from Lowton. Next morning he got up bright and breezy, I could hear giggling from the living room and went in to find Gaz watching Gimme Gimme and still wearing the same clothes. Then went to the City Centre for some retail therapy (still wearing the same clothes). Had lunch out at a very nice Italian Jobbie and then took him to the bus station for his bus back to Canterbury - still wearing the same clothes!! Great lad (I know he's 48 but certainly doesn't look it or act it ) - had some very funny postcards from him (he used to call me Janice Battersby which totally confused my postman at the time) and used to sign them "love Les"!! Don't have a phone call with him though cos you can't get a word in

Steve L Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Went to Wigan with Garry for the first time in 78 ( you as well Rob, remember? ) Been good mates & kept in touch ever since, even when he moved to Canterbury cos my mother in law lives down there. I've never met anyone who knows as many people, has travelled as many miles on public transport or who has been as consistently hardcore on the scene over the last 30 years! Top lad - definately an icon of the scene in my eyes.
Guest Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 Yes, I know Garry Churm quite well and have done since the days when we were at school together. I still remember the day when he stood up on the tables during an art class and sang "There's No Business Like Show Business". He looks younger today than he did in the seventies Sadly, we can't expect him to join forums like this, as it would probably be way beyond his technical capabilities. In fact, he still thinks the 'net is what Ena Sharples used to wear to keep her hairdo in-place.
Rob Wigley Posted June 10, 2005 Author Posted June 10, 2005 HELLO kAREN, which school were you at ??? gary always had a moustache from the age of about 13 i think which made him look older then. ! You didn't go on the North Africa cruise did you where he sold the ships towels in Morrocco in order to buy souvenirs for family and friends !? TRUE BY THE WAY I'm gonna have to get my photos out !

Mandy Posted June 13, 2005 Posted June 13, 2005 Guess who turned up at Cleethorpes Rob, I've caught the train from Newark ! will post pictures soon link I bet you had a ball but I bet your ears are ringing now My first encounter of Gaz was at a Cleethorpes weekender - his first words to me were "would you like one of my sugar worms" and promptly handed me a bag of pick n mix sweeties!! ACE
Steve L Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 Having read these libellous comments all I can say is that they're all true, or near enough to be thrown out of a court of law just in case I decide to sue. It might be worth it just to get enough cash for my next ticket to wherever. I decided to go to Cleethorpes at the last minute last week, and using the same resourcefulness that's allowed me to venture North and South by bus/train links since Adam was a lad, I arrived at the venue 'round midnite. It's a great way to travel and if I hadn't done so I wouldn't have met so many of you...wonderful people out there in the dark! tbc... gc
