For some reason i always assume everyone on here has always been around for ever on the northern scene and i'm often surprised when someone tells me they've only been into Northern Soul for a few years. Personally i don't care how long anyone has been around or how old they are. There are people on the scene who have done more for the scene and made more of an impact in a few years than i ever have and good luck to them.

I just thought it would fun and informative to do a poll and find out what the average time around is. Is it true the scene is full of relative newcomers or lifers or a mixture of the two?

If you are a returnee add your first time around to your second time around (or third if you keep clearing off then coming back).

Hope you're right mate, I think I have at least another 30 years in me yet ( as long as I can get my zimmer through the door and people dont mind the smell of pxss !!! :) )

The zimmer frame sounds like a really good idea... but i was thinking more around the lines of the electric chair. Obviously quicker than the zimmer frame, more comfortable, and you would beat the Golden Torch brigade to the bar every time! (presuming that is, that they are not camped out there already!) :(

221 votes is pretty good, thanks everyone. Here is my final graph then, obviously a small sample of the scene but if we say there are maybe 3000 people tops active on regular weekends that's still around 8%. But llike i said just for fun, although all the anecdotal evidence is that the mid 90s was a lean period and so it seems in terms of newcomers. Cheers.

Started about 74-75 Radcliffe youth club,

Great looking guys,Pulling fantastic looking girls, dancing to some decent sounds(Casualeers etc.)

Me all spotty shitty haircut and greasy skin,

What am I doing wrong? I think to myself,Hence my introdution to Northern Soul,

6 months later standing in a line on Station Rd,Thinking how will I get home when they dont let me in!!

35 years later sat on my fat arse and talking about it to people I've never even seen let alone know,

Now that's what I call music

Grant

I have been into it 13 years now started when I was 15 northern soul till I die its in the blood for good as they say

You still in Radcliffe mate?

Interesting thread Matt, nice one.

Despite 'only' 200 odd votes, I suspect it paints a reasonably representative picture.

I think it was May 1969 but it could have been 1968, I can't remember if I was in the lower or upper 6th. It's been hilarious!

PS I did have some leave of absence in 76/77 for punk but kept going to nighters dressed oddly.

Have those who have voted counted those years from when they first attended a venue and included a number of years when they weren't actually "on the scene" or do the answers just show the years spent on it ?

Hello mate,I live in Hollins, have lived all over the place,Bury for the last 15 years.I left the scene in 1979,but started coming back in the 90s was amazed that the scene was still going. It was sparked by a phone call out of the blue from the late ,great Martyn Ellis, when he started DJing again.Tend to go out to niters every couple of months(it takes me a week to recover,Im an old git)but every 4 weeks at St Bernadettes on Manchester rd,a cracking oldies night.Cheers Steve

Hopefully the answers are those years spent on the scene, not including any 'time off' as it were. I count myself at around 21 years, since i had around ten years off, otherwise i'd be 31 years, like Mark Freeman who started going when i did but has never had a break... and it shows.

When I was a lad back in the early 70s, I...

a. knew no one else who liked Northern Soul to any great degree,

b. had very little money and...

c. had no transport, so I never went to a Northern Soul night.

I still haven't been to one and at the moment, a. and b. still apply :(
