Which Tracks For A Compilation

I was speaking to a pal today and he told he was at a surprise party and the DJ's only played Northern tracks.

He asked me for a few tracks that summed up Northern. As I am new (5yrs or so) to the music I thought I would

struggle to fill a cd.

What 20-30 tracks would you put on the cd to give a good impression of Northern?

Or do I loan him my Ian D Wigan,Wheel series or my Cellarful of Motown cd's .... over to you.

I'll take him to the last Blacktrackin at the Woodside in July.

He won't go far wrong with the Wheel, Torch, Mecca, Wigan albums for the obvious ones from the early era as they're probably a good place to start - they've done incredibly well - at the last count they were up to 40k apiece - 160k total which is incredible in the current market, so they're pretty popular. However, they only reflect the Sony/BMG back catalogue so I'd add some of the obvious Kent and Goldmine releases plus that 'Soul Satisfaction' CD from Universal is pretty good too......

tony galla - in love

van dykes - save my love for a rainy day

valentinos - sweeter than the day before..

I always think when you give someone a cd for the first time... give them classics then the next one give them x/over etc...

otherwise when you try to explain what northern soul is the you give them a cd with 80's soul on it gets complicated.. when they have a couple of cd's then they can tell why you also like newer stuff..

only my opinion....
