word of a new book out on friday

THE STAR-studded career of an East Lancashire DJ who shared a bill with The Supremes and Edwin Starr has been chronicled in print.

Since making his debut at Burnley Mecca in 1969, aged just 16, John 'Ginger' Taylor has performed in venues across the globe.

But the 55-year-old from Todmorden is probably best known from his time at clubs in Blackburn, Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle.

Now the Northern Soul fanatic's adventures have been documented in a new book.

The book, On the Right Track with DJ Ginger Taylor, has been written by 58-year-old Northern Soul aficionado Rob McKeever.

Hiya,

You're not missing anything m'dear - Everyone knows him as Ray but when you click on that link, the journalist calls him John.

My initial thought was 'who wants to read a book about Ginger' he's a normal bloke!. but when you think about some of the artist's he's met and some of the stories he'll have to tell, I reckon curiousity will get me and I'll give it a read too. :wicked:

sorry if I'm not making sense now, I'm a pint of wine into the evening.

it matters not what you think of anyone who wishes to lay his life bare in the pages of a book.....as much as they are a subject of derision the chaps who were there in the beginning have had a huge input into the scene....you cannot deny they must have lived a fascinating life and met many people who we will never meet...........and i have never read a book about "northern soul" i dont know why but hey i may just read this one....

oh and ps...its "pope" john ray....sorry ginger

Not denying the input ,and what scene are you talking bout re the beginning,is it the nothern soul scene up to when? Cant remember Ginger breaking many sounds to be honest ,could be wrong on that score however?Might be handy to name a few! Does someone get kudos and respect on this scene if there have met many artistes ? IM sure many have a tale to tell in that respect!!

It would be hypocritical to judge somethinhg i have not read, however Im not running out to get this one immediatly till a bit feedback comes through.

ID like a good read from Manship,John Anderson or someone like Butch to be honest people who have really sort the vinyl!!!!

Think it might be a better read and as for your sheep comment come on ,thats a bit over the top isnt it and a tad disrespectful.

Observation, book due out and already being slagged off, bit like the film and numerous other subjects, topics and threads, as I've said before if you don't like something then don't subscibe to it, a trait of this scene it would seem is everyone likes to be a face, everyone likes to have an opinion and have little or no thought for other peoples feelings, glad I'm out of it to be honest, pontificating bollocks on the whole.

met many people i said not artistes we have all met a few of those for gods sake..i think you took that from the newspaper article there is more to it than the "big faces" other people own great records ya know  .......does one have to break new sounds to be a part of the "northern soul" scenes history?...i just hate it when someone or something is condemned without a fair trial.....gets me the same way with people who dont know a record and automatically assume its shite...reserve your judgement until you have sampled what is on offer is all i am saying......

cookie

point 1 ofcourse other people own great records,im from the north east where collectors have plugged away for years without regognition.Sercondly why should you round on my comments a tad presumptious thinking that i I equate big faces with discovering records ,quite the contray to be honest, and been part of the scene and active throughout the eightties where lots of records wee discovered by good freinds and people without the razamataz sourrounding them demonstrates a slight contradiction. Alot of djs own importance has been embelised in the books, cds, kudos etc while missing the whole point ,its about the artistes not the djs.

I mention Butch as an example of someone whos really got his hands dirty in the US which surely from a collectors point of view is of more interest to vinyl entusiasts.

I dont assume the books shite cookie f--k me where did that come from,I dont think Ginger is shite also, however if he is a big name and lives by that perhaps he should accept constructive critisism .Nothing more nothing less,im not a star gazer also, dont get that at all lol/

Point taken Mark im not a face im a north east record colector nothing more nothing less, never cared for the egos,i express an opinon that i will not rush out to buy a book and then im public enemy no 1 ,otthers made the comments also.Just think from a collectors point of view other material may be more intersting.

  • Ginger's all time personal fave is Right Track
  • He is one of the most genuine DJs on the scene
  • He was there in the beginning and is still there
  • How can you slag a book you haven't read, and a bloke you haven't met

As someone rightly said earlier, if its not for you, don't buy it. He had a lot of time for my lad when he was starting out on the scene, and still asks about him.

Thanks,

Brian

Thing is, it's not Ginger's book is it?

It's a book about him written by somebody that must want to do it, for whatever reason.

I'm sure Ginger is flattered (and why not) and will obviously co-operate in the process but is anybody on here willing to say that they would expect somebody to turn down such an opportunity, no matter how limited the appeal may be.

He's a good bloke and on that basis alone, good luck to him and the author.

  • How can you slag a book you haven't read, and a bloke you haven't met

It is amazing how easy it is: that's technology for you!

Half of the problem is that there is a book in most people on the scene - I remember Swish starting one in the 70s (if you know Swish you'll know that could have been the first Northern book to make it into the science-fiction section). So when something comes out a small section feel that someone has just p*ssed on their territory - it's understandable, and it makes the 'you have to read it first' point hard to apply. Some will not give it a fair hearing whether they've read it or not. A shame because whatever the weakness of the book, there's bound to be some, the strength is that it offers another part to our collective history. And as contributor above said, Ginger has played as bigger part in that history as most others: he has every right to voice it and good luck to him. Well done - getting it out is an achievement in itself!

I dont have to read EVERY book , by every person who writes one to know whats of interest to me. Ive listened to Ginger for over 30 years and to be honest, have not heard much of interest, to me. Thats not to say others dont enjoy him. I have not seen him out and about as a punter much either...out there on the floor dancing away and sharing his charisma with the rest of us. Thats not to say YOU wont find this interesting. Im sure you will. I know I dont like the style of Barbara Cartland and therefore dont feel the need to read all her books in order to judge them. Having seen her interviewed and having 'listened' to her philosophy and opinions, I just know shes not of interest to me. Its my perogitive.

Baz, I've been trying to make sense of your comments on this thread:

Are you saying the book is crap or are you saying give it a chance?

I suspect, from what I can piece together, you don't like books, but you're quick to slag them off (even if you haven't read them) because you are more interested in the records and think people are writing books to blow hot air up their own backsides? Is that about it or have I got it way wrong?

And who won the TV?
