Garethx Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Same her, got the gold one & never seen a purple one & have seen it around that price range too. What an incredible tune though. ATB, Craig I have it on a burgundy Mellotone label. Will post a scan when I dig it out.
Guest Johnny Mack Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I guess the maroon one is the rarer of the Mellotone releases - the one I have is the gold label like most other folks. I've three 45's by Billy - on Flash, Mellotone and Palos - not a bad one amongst them - the Palos 45 is great. Does anyone know if he cut anything else - Is there any background history on him - I'd be real interested to hear ! Take care John

Take care John he has another 45 on flash that is rare (it's a charley rich cover, not something you would actually want to play) and a 45 on USA. He was a member of the antennas on clay who are the same group as shirley and the squires on constellation. They also back perk lee on boss but are not the squires on boss for some reason. His brother george mcgregor was in the group too and cut a record on twinight. His brother is not the same person as the detroit george mcgregor, who is his cousin. Billy told me that mr shy was originally written for Ruby Andrews (as Mrs. Shy) but then he was persuaded to cut it on himself by Don Clay. I might interview billy on my radio show soon hopefully. Stefan Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Here it is: Thanks for your response ! Yes it's the one (burbury) that i've bought for a great price. It's a second issue or just different color of label ? Edited May 11, 2009 by ChicagoSoul
Garethx Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Glad to be of help. The consensus seems to be that the gold label is the more common of the two: I've had both but kept the dark red one. I used to have his Palos 45 too, but seem to have sold that. A record that once had a pretty hefty price tag but wasn't quite good enough to justify it. The George McGregor & The Bronzettes 45 on Twinight, Temptation Is Hard To Fight, is a tremendous ballad, and was even featured on the soundtrack of Season II of 'Mad Men'.

Thanks, so I am satisfied to have found the burgundy issue , "It's my turn" is a very nice deep soul ballad. George McGregor seems to be his brother and "Temptation is hard To Fight" is one of my favorites tracks. I like listened this in the morning ! There's info on Billy McGregor here: LINK Edited May 11, 2009 by ChicagoSoul
Stillsoulin Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I have the USA 45 also, Thank your mother and your father ( which is actually "The great creation" b side of its my turn, b/w we can over come with love, duet with Doris Young, a mid pacer that unfortunatly does not quite work, not for me anyway. The Palos 45 seems to elude me, I agree that the jewel in the crown for Billy is its my turn, got my copy (maroon) off mr Dearlove many moons ago at an Essence weekender, top tune. Rob h.
