Guest Paul Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 so come on who are the uncoverers ill say brother louis brown ,now who can honestly say they new it was wilson pickett 1st It amazed me that more people didn't recognise such a distinctive voice. In fact, I'm still puzzled after all these years.
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Worry ye not Paul. I uncovered it. Bought the LP in Fox's in Doncaster and was gobsmacked to find the Top nighter sound on the LP. But not as gobsmacked as Pat was when I played it an hour before he came on - uncovered! Sean
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Curiously, from the same stash, I uncovered Richards, Sandy Linzer cover up - Reuben Howell "Can't Stop A Man In Love". Became convinced that the Top DJ's only shopped at bargain basement stores for their rarities - and then I made a career of it! Sean

Diddy Morgan Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 One is just a slightly different version to the other though, as far as I can tell Frankie Karl / Aviators is the same record apart from one intro being longer i wonder who uncovered joe mathews or did richard reveal it himself, although the exclusiveness of that one record attracted thousands to the casino,so maybe not!!
Douglas Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Kev Draper uncovered The Group featuring Cecil Washington "I Dont Like To Lose" when he obtained a copy himself, Richard Searling felt he should have still played it as Joe Matthews to maintain its mystique, also concerning distinctive vocals Pat Brady covered up Bobby Womack 'Find Me Somebody" as Lenny Curtis and that fooled a lot of people.

I had reviewed the record in Black Echoes long before it was played on the scene. Apart from having hundreds of copies I assumed everyone would have instantly recognised the voice. Paul
Douglas Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 When did Pat cover up Bobby Womack, i didn't know that ever got covered up? Pat Brady covered it up as Lenny Curtis 'Someboby To Love" in fact you can actually hear him on refosoul on this site at Wigan Casino dedicating it to Guy Hennigan, some of his other cover ups were spot on as soundalikes Magnificent 7 covered up as The Chandlers, Pat Lewis covered up as Eula Cooper etc.

I had been around to his house, I took some of my unknows and he was playing me some of his. He was still living in Skipton at the time.
Douglas Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I dont know if there has ever been a thread on here concerning covered up records that sound nothing like the artists they were covered up as, if not i would suggest a couple Cecil Washington aka Joe Matthews-nothing like Joe and General Assembley aka Don Varner again nothing like Don.
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Apart from having hundreds of copies I assumed everyone would have instantly recognised the voice. Paul That's whats amazing isn't it Paul. Nobody did! Pat played it for months as 'Brother Louis Brown' and had everyone guessing (certainly at Clifton Hall 1980). Then again, how many Northern Soul Nighter goers, at the time, ever really listened to Wilson Pickett? Sean

flashback Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Richard searling made the mistake of saying the correct title holder of the record and talking out loud "oh sugar" and that was that.Didnt lose but in the end liked to.
Eddie Hubbard Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I remember Richard playing The Four Reputation " Call on me " on Millage at Stafford C/U , I went up to him and said I've got this [ bought it a few weeks before by The Presentations for £5 ] anyway on hearing this news he uncovered it right in front of me .Didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't the copy that I'd got !! Though they are pretty similar .Best,Eddie
Kev Moore Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Story goes my brother Mick uncovered lots of Casino tunes. Apparently he used to buy em of Richard and uncover them the same night in the record bar. can't be certain what tunes they were as I was a youth then and not paying too much attention to the records. Richard, Pat or Guy would know more or our Dave Kev Edited May 11, 2009 by Kev Moore
