Guest Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Love that Archie Bell although IMO the flip is even better (Don't Let Love Get You Down). Recent cheap acquisitions Emotions: Can't Stand No More Heartaches (Brainstorm) Deon Jackson: I Can't Go On (Carla) Artistics: It's Those Little Things That Count (Brunswick) Marvin Gaye: When I Had Your Love (Tamla) Caesars: La La (I Love You) (Lanie) Sapphires: Who Do You Love (Swan) Webs: Tomorrow (Popside) John
Gene-r Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 "Tomorrow" by the Webs on Popside is absolutely smashing!! Also came out on UK London, which can be bought relatively cheaply. Also worth mentioning "I've Got Mine You Better Get Yours" by the Sapphires on Swan, available for about £20 or far less on Ebay!! The final release on Windy C, "Change of Pace" by the 5 Stairsteps is also worth looking out for. Like all the Windy C 45s, it can be picked up for about £5, but sounds like it should be worth 50 times this amount!! Gene
Guest Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 There's a change of pace for sale on ebay at the moment
Dave Abbott Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 The final release on Windy C, "Change of Pace" by the 5 Stairsteps is also worth looking out for. Like all the Windy C 45s, it can be picked up for about £5, but sounds like it should be worth 50 times this amount!! Absolutely brilliant!! Been banging this one down on the south coast for a while, I know Russ Vickers has just got one so should get further exposure. And with superb cheapies like this, why do people need to play reissues/boots/etc (NO, i'm not starting that debate again!)

Citizen P Posted April 8, 2004 Author Posted April 8, 2004 Oh well my shopping list just gets longer and longer. On a quick count up about 50 good sounds here, that's about a third of a nights playlist. If we keep it going we should come up with a bloody good night of music all for the price of half a Shrine release. Some Motown to carry on David Ruffin--I can't stop the rain Martha Reeves--Heartless Temptations--I'm coming home Originals--Good lovin just a dime away Dynamic Superiors--One nighter Edwin Starr-- Love the lonely peoples prayer Most of these are 7ts things but the Martha Reeeves is a right old storming motown mutha. Tony

Guest mattmale Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Who's going to be first to promote a "Cheapies Night"? link It's cheapies night, every night, at my house. Already got 'Aint gonna rest/you can't see' and 'Playgirls Love' by the Stairsteps, with the other mentioned earlier that'l be 3, i feel a collection coming on... coming on strong even..... Anyone know any more by them? M.
Guest mattmale Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 The best cheap record i ever bought was Bobby Bland - Aint Nothing You Can Do - Duke £7 ....but only because it has 'Honey Child' on the flipside. IMO one of the most soulful gritty sounds ever, and really does sound like it's worth ten times that. Matt
Headsy Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 One record that even SOUNDS rare but isn't is "Lonely Girl" by The Young Folk (aka Miss Madeline), a bloody unbelievable record and would surely have been huge had a million copies turned up link you might say '' a proper northern soul record '' and no I am not trying to agree with you !!!

Guest Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Good pick!... but must say deffo go for the Miss Madeline release! then ya gets the brill "Behave Yourself" on flip!... and they the same cut anyway Steve link Only just heard this, this morning, liked it, just bought one on ebay for less than a tenner. One of my fave subjects, cheap records. Looked through loads of sales boxes through the '90s never really saw any bargains. Except maybe a beat up Dynells atco demo £30 at Canklow, no spare cash, Maggie had her lager head on. Last few months I've managed to cross from my wants list. Jimmy Norman, Lucky Laws. Since '93 from a Trevor Thomas tape. Ultimations, Pinches twins tape. Buddy Lamp, June Conquest. Old Roger Banks tape. Tommy Cook & Fantastics. Old Saus tape. James Brown-Money won't... Picked up on through this forum, cheers. Jean Wells. Holgate club York. Bobo Mr Soul. Old tape revisited. Is it Archie Bell ?? Superlatives. Browsing Manships recomended list. Continental four, TSU Tornadoes. Valatone CD. Joe Tex-Baby be good. Josephine Taylor-Good lovin. Heard at a barbeque this summer. Steve Mancha-You're still in my heart. Heard Whilst browsing Soul Club. Aside from the Buddy Lamp. $47 didn't pay more than £15 for any of the above. Sometimes Gemm, or Netsounds are cheaper than ebay. Craig Moerer is often cheaper than ebay. I did the 1st hour at the Holgate club a couple of times and tried to play the cheaper side of soul. Had I better get my coat ??

Guest Soultown andy Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 We need referees no doubt there will be some debate on the nite as to what is worth under 50 quid these days, should be fun.
Ady Potts Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 THE PROFILES - I STILL LOVE YOU - BAMBOO. About a tenner, brilliant. Pottsy.
pikeys dog Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 We need referees no doubt there will be some debate on the nite as to what is worth under 50 quid these days, should be fun. link How about inviting a small panel of Soul Sourcers to help judge? Either that or use Johnny Ovenchips Guide as final judge... that would make it harder as most £50 are more in there...... WOOF!

pikeys dog Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Somebody would try to get round that by only playing their UK release stuff. link Proposed Ground rules are: 1. U.S original 45s only. 2. Must be currently available for less than £50 in EX condition. 3. Must be 'Northern' in style. 4. Must be a Dancer. So this means...... No UK (or other foreign release). No Goldmine 7s. No Grapevine. No Boots. No Dodgy Acetates. No battered copies of £200 records. No 'Oh I paid a tenner for Sam Dees' Lonely in 1988' WOOF!

Guest Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Exactly Woof! link It's easy to take the piss out of this in the details, but I'll bet there's not many on here who'll gainsay the basic theme of this. I'll bet the Yorkshire DJ's will come out on top... There's nobody tighter
