Sharon Cooper Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 (edited) I know i don't want to start a big argument, but, can somebody tell me how Modern Soul got to be involved with the Northern scene. You got out to a Northern Soul night, you pay your money for a Northern night, you sit down, buy a drink, have a chat and listen and dance to both classic, rare and more often than not middle of the road Northern, you know what I mean, In Orbit, House For Sale, etc , etc. Don't mind that too much as long as somebody is brave enough to play something rarer or less well known and then right in the middle of the night you are treated to a hour of 'Modern ' As far as I am concerned the two should never meet. let the modern guys organise their own nights. How many modern nights bang an hours rare northern, or any other northern for that matter, into a modern soul night? None I should think. Keep `em apart `cause they don't meet, never have and never will. Edited May 10, 2009 by bridget

I don't think anyone's disputing that but the point was that someone played an hours worth of modern at a northern night. 2 records is surely enough. Bit like if I played an hour of reggae at a northern night - people would be expecting to hear NS.
Guest posstot Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 .............and we loved 'em!! In the begginning there was RnB.....which grew into RnB/ Soul......with grew into Soul/Funk/ Disco.... which grew into disco/ jazz funk /Garage/ House/ Kylie and Girls aloud. I know which i prefer.....THE REAL DEAL where it originated as Soul music late fifties through the sixties.....because it all went a bit bum tish, bum tish, bum tish, bum tish after that....and too many buttons became involved......toooooohhhoooooo!

Bit like if I played an hour of reggae at a northern night - people would be expecting to hear NS. that is the crux of it all for me I once traveled from Poole, Dorset all the way to Peterborough for a 'Northern Soul' all-nighter. I was thoroughly disappointed when I got there to hear hours of stuff from one DJ that didn't sound remotely like the music I was expecting; it sounded more like the stuff you could hear in a nightclub in Bournemouth - a mere 20 minute bus ride from Poole. I'm not saying that it was all rubbish, some of it was quite good, but not what I had travelled 100's of miles to hear for hours on end. The result for me was that I will never again attend a venue where that DJ plays.

Can we see a flyer or the advert?

Mark S Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 The strange world of Northern Soul I know lets have an across the board event it will keep everybody happy , it will honestly it will it will it will
Sharon Cooper Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 Yet if you go to a modern night you will find 90% of the people there have come from the northern ranks and are extremly knowledgable and appriciative of all gendre of soul (open minded). Perhaps if you mentioned the venue you were at the promoter could answer your question, was it billed as a northern only night or across the board, were people actually dancing and enjoying the modern stuff, was the night about the majority there who just wanted to dance and have a good time or chin strokers pis*ing up each others backs about who knows more about obscure records. Questions Questions perhaps you could start your own northern only night, but then you've just pulled out of your own night that was doing exactly the same as the one your no doubt whining about, So I really think you should know better. Perhaps you'll have a better night at Willington next week, now it's gone back to regressive soul. John John You obviously know Chris, but I don`t think he has the `benefit` of knowing you. Now far be it from me to jump to conclusions but I sense a tad bit of sarcasm here without you having the advantage of knowledge or facts! `Pulled out of...` is not really the correct terminology but to go into details about why he decided to move on from a soul night which he had been more than instrumental in running over the last 7 years was not the purpose of this thread and not really anyones business! I can`t think that Chris was `whining` here and having known him for 34 years I can say that he really isn`t a whiner (But again perhaps you would know better!) The whole ethos of his starting comments seems to have been lost on you but as he`s out golfing at the moment I`m sure he will respond more fully when he returns. Sharon
Guest dundeedavie Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 no surprises here but i agree that neither modern or R&B should be played at northern venues ...BUT ... i'm not entirely sure northern could survive without them , for me it's not a standalone genre anymore

Keep `em apart `cause they don't meet, never have and never will. 1st the question was Can somebody tell me how modern soul got to be involved with the northern scene, perhaps i should have added, 'To the extent that it has today'. 2nd I was'nt having a dig at any particular gig/venue, (what would that prove?) having been to plenty of different ones over the years, and enjoyed them immensely 3rd Yes Iv'e been to Grantham, which is out & out modern, there you get what you pay for. One of the best nights we've been to just recently was Rugeley where the djs played some modern but mixed it up just perfect has far as I'm concerned. 4th Actually i prefer to hear the oldies that you don't hear to much these days, like Lewis Clark, Jock Mitchell, Carl Spencer, but am happy to listen & play different music. I'm particulary fond of Akon at the moment. 5th Yes I have promoted a soul night where 'modern' was played by lots of our guests including myself. 6th We go to gigs knowing full well they will play modern, like Willington, and have no problem with that at all, but if it's so great why are venues turning back to the 'retrograde stuff' as implied by an earlier post. 7th What the hell as it got to do with anybody why I quit promoting Pilsley. I have my reasons and others can only speculate, but i can tell you it wasn't because of modern music. If I want modern I'll go to a modern venue, if I want oldies i'll go to an oldies venue etc etc. if its AtB fine at least I know what I'm getting. Edited May 10, 2009 by Chris53

Rich B Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I always find these threads irresistable! I started going to "northern" clubs in either December '71 or January '72, thereabouts. It wasn't even called "northern soul" then. Archie Bell's "Here I go again" was being played as a track off a new release import album. By the time I was a regular at Wigan (early '74) I was dancing to things like the Salvadors etc which were often only 2 or 3 years old at the time. By the end of '74 things like Carstairs, Lou Edwards, Mel Britt etc were monsters, all, again only a couple of years old. "Modern" has always been played if you take those tunes as a measure. I recall in the late seventies being bemused by people trying to 'stomp' to Todays People - though they clearly thought it was "northern" and were having an excellent time without worrying about when it was made. And as a final point, I was at the first Nottm Palais Revival (oldies) alldayer in the late 80's, and I heard a couple of guys (who would have been the same sort of age I am now) in thier fifties, say "its not been the same since they stopped playing Howling Wolf"! Dave Godin always said if we stop listening to new music we'll become the new "Teddy boys" - and how right he was, look at the trend for people to have made the clothes they wore 'back in the day' - bar towels etc. So, as I, and many others, have said before, its not about the date on the label its what's in the grooves! Best, RB

Ian D whether people want to admit it or not the "northern soul " scene is retrospective in that (for me) northern soul is 60's music and in saying that 70's is 70's and modern is modern ...remember folks you can employ as much semantics as you like about new releases etc but this is 2009 and not wigan in the mid 70's

A few too many 60's hangovers slipped out in the early 70's to be quite so cut and dried I think. James Lewis and the Case Of Tyme or Johnny Howard modern? Don't think so........ I reckon what's really needed is a proper definition of Modern Soul - I haven't heard a decent definition of it in 40 years........ Ian D
