Pete S Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 For some reason it woudnt play for me? chris Imagine a fast reggae version of Exodus with someone talking all over the top of it...typical UK production, sorry Andreas, I think it's as bad as those Torpedo things I sold for £200 yesterday!
Andreas Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 For some reason it woudnt play for me? chris checked it out here on another pc and it works fine. no idea why it doesn´t work for you
Pete S Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 checked it out here on another pc and it works fine. no idea why it doesn´t work for you It definitely works, but they don't like you putting mp3's up on the site, they prefer you to use the refosoul feature

claudio Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Honestly IMHO this is one of the worst, overrated and most overpriced records in Reggae history Not my cup of tea at all...
Pete S Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Honestly IMHO this is one of the worst, overrated and most overpriced records in Reggae history Not my cup of tea at all... Thank you, I'm not on my own then. I wouldn't pay 10p for it. Well I would, if I had someone to sell it to.
Andreas Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 Honestly IMHO this is one of the worst, overrated and most overpriced records in Reggae history Not my cup of tea at all... Claudio, I know that all is a question of taste, but to your meaning about this record (aside from your comment "overpriced"...I don´t think you have any idea how many of that pre-releases only record were made) ...I really would love to see your fav´s list to reggae and soul .....liquidator...the snake, is it something like that?
Pete S Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Claudio, I know that all is a question of taste, but to your meaning about this record (aside from your comment "overpriced"...I don´t think you have any idea how many of that pre-releases only record were made) ...I really would love to see your fav´s list to reggae and soul .....liquidator...the snake, is it something like that? Hey you can't slag of Liquidator, it was The Wolves theme tune for over 30 years!
claudio Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I know it's pretty scarce which doesn't make it good... There's one known copy of 'The Tickler' which isn't good either. Reggae: Junior Soul - Glendevon Special Trevor & The Maytones - Every Day Is Like A Holiday Derrick Harriott - It's Alright Dennis Walks - Belly Lick Roman Stewart - While I Was Walking Ska/Rocksteady: Alton Ellis - Mouth A Massy Alva Lewis - Hang my head Ferdie Nelson - Lonely & Blue Boy Don Drummond - China Town Hopeton Lewis - Cool Cool Collie Junior Soul - Miss Cushie My taste probably changes within a week, but that's what I like right now. it's much harder to make a good list on ska/rocksteady because there are soooooo many great tunes... Reggae is easier because I don't like most of that organ overkill "skinhead" tunes. I'm mainly into '68, Derrick Harriott, George Murphy, Duke Reid and of course Coxsone productions. Soul: Eddie Kendricks - Date With The Rain NA Allen - Thanks For Nothing Wild Sound Unlimited - I Know You Claude Huey - Drifting Montclairs - Unwanted Love Impalas - Speed Up Soul is much harder for me, there are just too many tunes to pick (Northern or Modern, I like both). I'm listening Soul for something like 1.5 years or so but been into Motown etc. for some time now.

No need to take the piss just because he doesn't like it. Like 90% of British produced reggae, it's just crap compared to the real thing. Stand that next to something like Austin Faithful - I Am Losing You or The Tennors - Reggae Girl or Derrick Harriott - Been So Long etc etc
Andreas Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 No need to take the piss just because he doesn't like it. Like 90% of British produced reggae, it's just crap compared to the real thing. Stand that next to something like Austin Faithful - I Am Losing You or The Tennors - Reggae Girl or Derrick Harriott - Been So Long etc etc Pete, which of them is a reggae tune? for me all three are rock steady songs in the same way as from claudio´s list Reggae: Junior Soul - Glendevon Special Derrick Harriott - It's Alright Dennis Walks - Belly Lick but rock steady is another topic which cannot be beated by any reggae song in this world. by the way, Trevor & The Maytones - Every Day Is Like A Holiday from claudio´s list is for me one of the boringst songs under the sun and a wast in vinyl, but also that one found some fans.
claudio Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Well Glendevon Special is indeed rather Rocksteady than Reggae but it doesn't really matter to me... but Belly Lick, Reggae Girl or Been So Long????? You can't say Rocksteady as a genre can't be beaten by any Reggae tunes... There are hundreds of great tracks after 75(I know Pete doens't like anything after 71 or so ) which have the same power(Jr Gong, Nicodemus, Super Cat etc.etc.) as Ska/Rocksteady tunes. Trevor & The Maytones boring? The A Side is great (Have you time) and imho the B side is even better. It has everything a good track needs: Plenty of bass, good rhythm and singing. By the way 95% of all Torpedo records are just utter crap and the Hot Rod all stars were probably the most untalented band in the world. Same for bands like The Setters, Hippy Boys or The Corporation... After all it's just a matter of taste.

All of them are reggae - fast, early reggae - they're as different from rocksteady as rocksteady is to ska! But "It's Alright" is rocksteady.

I can´t agree with you Pete, but I have to accept it because your ears are far older than mine and probably also more sensitive
Pete S Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I can´t agree with you Pete, but I have to accept it because your ears are far older than mine and probably also more sensitive Plus I obviously know what I'm talking about and you don't, must be because I've been listening to it for 40 years...

Same for bands like The Setters, Hippy Boys or The Corporation... You can not say they were untalented, otherwise they would had one hit after the other..just hear todays radio and you will hear all that untalented crap and i don´t think the times has changed since the 60´s in the music business I doesn´t like the most output of that bands either, but in general is it not the worst basic to have no or less talent. without so called "un- or less talented" bands a rare or northern soul scene wouldn´t exist today and a skinhead reggae scene either.
Andreas Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 Plus I obviously know what I'm talking about and you don't, must be because I've been listening to it for 40 years... maybe you are now TOO old to talk about it Pete
Pete S Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 maybe you are now TOO old to talk about it Pete Just stop making yourself look stupid and go and find one person who thinks that you know the difference between rocksteady and reggae because you evidently don't, or better still, ask Tony Rounce or Toad or D The Drug if they think that I Am Losing You or Been So Long oh and Reggae Girl (er, the clue is in the title) are not actually reggae at all but are in fact...rocksteady!

Guest billy joe Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 the rudies "brixton rocket" on uk fab is a killer, fast organ driven instrumental. been recently sold on ebay for a uncredibely highest price!!!!!!!
Guest Lord GrabAndFlee Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Don't take me TOO seriously here, but I think the fine line between rocksteady to reggae should be defined by the exact date and time Lynn Taitt packed it up and moved to Canada! Of course this will prove to very very historically inaccurate, as both styles were being recorded at the same time; I just like to marvel at the contributions made by Lynn Taitt to Jamaican popular music in the 60s and give him as much credit as possible...
ZapatootheTiger Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 I just like to marvel at the contributions made by Lynn Taitt to Jamaican popular music in the 60s and give him as much credit as possible... Spot on, Lord. ...and let's not forget that not only did he play on thousands of sessions (unmistakeably, but often un-credited), but also graced the UK Pop charts at least once via Johnny Nash's HOLD ME TIGHT B) B) I wonder how Lyn Tait (or even JA music) would have developed had he stayed back-a-yard?
Guest Carlos007 Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 "Belly Lick" is for me a real rubbish tune!..but Claudio is the typical only jamaican prod. "mental-limited boy", if it's a jamaican production no matter if it's rubbish, claudio will says: Great Tuneee!! I know perfectly this people... Relax Andreas, I like Jamaican and British reggae, this one is a cool song =) You should ignore commentaries of limited people, They will never change, and will continue listening "Belly Lick" though the lyric is so stupid. Long life to British Ska & Reggae! Regards
