Mark Bicknell Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Interested to know if people on the rare soul scene are full on 365 days a year 24/7 when I say that I mean do you play records every day? is the scene and the music constantly in your thoughts? does it tend to take a front seat in your every day lives? although I don't attend that many venues these day's the music, records etc. is alway's there, it's like no matter how hard you try to do other things and interests the Northern thing never let's go, it's been said before that it get's in your blood, becomes very obsessive which I feel that people become very protective of it resulting in the politics, heated debates etc. I reckon we are all on this scene for life, the passion and love for the music has to be with us all forever....... nothing quite like it is there? Regards - Mark Bicknell.

I have my moments , usualy knackered from work (Monday/Tues) and weekend boozing but come wed/thursday start getting a bit twitchy (for Music ) and the missus loves playing stupid games on the PC , then I say I'll just pop a couple of records on , then 3 hours later (& a couple of bottles of Red) we end up having an embarrasing dance (not at the time!) then wake up in the morning and pick some of the records up (not in covers!!) and think did I really like that but I will never get bored or tired of it (and the Records !!!! ) Swifty
Guest Sharon Mckinstry Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Ooh, can feel the heated passionate debate starting already ! Think this is very much down to personality traits. I love soul music and enjoy going to venues etc when I can but enjoy lots of other stuff and dont want it to be my whole life . Not all my friends are soulies and it can be boring for them! My hubby on the other hand is what I`d refer to as a purist. He eats sleeps and s**ts soul . Got to be ovo only, refuses to go to anything thats not soul based and is obsessed with matrix numbers (or something like that). My attention span is do I like it and can I dance to it . This has caused many heated debates in my own home and I was almost divorced on the grounds of wiping one of his records on my sleeve . When I was in labour with my oldest child I had to wait for him compiling a wants list to somebody before we could leave for the hospital ! Just realised he might pick up on this. Better start a new thread, soul widows anyone
BrianB Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 This is me to a T. I listen to Northern and Motown every day without fail. At least an hour, sometimes 2 or 3. I read about it, study it, its my major passion after my family, and on a par with mountain/hill walking. I don't like any other type of music, or watch tv, I just don't listen to it, and am just not interested in it. A bit sad I suppose really?

Garswood Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Got to say, my wife is a soul widow, when we first met in 1990 we used to go bradford every fortnight without fail, but i,d be in the main room while she was downstairs in the funky room, i,d been into northern for about 10 years then and she had this idea that she'd get me "off" it and start to lead a normal life , ha ha.we even had barry may for our DJ, 19years later, she's still trying, there is not single day goes by where i am not searchin, buying, selling(not so much) soul music, and i just love it ..i,ve even been threatened with a divorce once, although i think she was joking ..have to say though the kids love it too, especially my daughter, and they all know not to touch dads vinyl. i only get out about once a month these days, sometimes on my own sometimes with my brother, none of my mates are into it and think i'm tapped paying this and that for a little peice of plastic and to be honest my missus thinks all records cost between £10-£20 , ooh is that bad, anyway soulie till the day i die.....northern soul, its my passion not a fashion....phil
Guest rasfoz Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Every day in someway my dear lady hates it with a passion but away i go upstairs to savour the sounds of soul , dont get out & about much theese days but nothing diminshes theres still nothing that comes close
Jim Elliott Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 No, it's always around in one form or another, to quote a well worn (rather fine) apt phrase 'it's a passion not a fashion'..........''They call me.. Mr Schemer'' Regards Jim
Sunnysoul Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Totally live and breathe Soul music, every second of every day ...
Dave Rimmer Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Got to say, my wife is a soul widow, All I can say is my wife's name on SS is Soul Widow
Guest Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 (edited) All I can say is my wife's name on SS is Soul Widow I have " knocked around " for 44 years , and have enjoyed / listened to " the " music in various forms for some 47 , my commitment is not the full 24 / 7 these days as it once was , bur I know there is not a day goes by without some " soulful " input or involvement such as SS , other internet media , reading , calling up or being called by friends , and listening to " the " music ........ I blame The Orlons . If I had never heard " The Wah-Watusi " , I might have been a " Normal Norman " Malc Burton Edited May 8, 2009 by Malc Burton
mischief Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Record wise everyday.. i'm always looking for some thing to buy.. always getting the buzz from buying new records... very rare I buy cd's.. going out i've cut down on... trouble is, I work harder now then ever before and my wife also works longer hours... some times we only see each other for a few hours a week... so come the weekend nice to spend quality time together... not rushing about...
gazman Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Every day, without fail. I can't rmember the last time I listned to the radio in the car. It is very much a passion. I used to buy and listen to other types of music but I find the older I get the more blinkered I get. I thought it would have been the other way round . gary
paup-ine Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Its always in my mind. My default when I get to the computer is to click on Explorer & Soul Source without even thinking about it, when I am supposed to be doing something else!! P
Guest Bearsy Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 thing i have a problem with is when someone is talking to you about normal things and im listening but im just not hearing cos i have a tune on my mind and you just stand there grinning and nodding pretending your actually taking notice and are interested in what they are saying then you have a terrets moment and spurt something out about the tune on your mind and you get a proper confused look back
Modernsoulsucks Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Collection hardly ever. Soul radio never unless happen to be in the car. Internet radio never. Clips I don't know on here or Ebay most days. CDs only in the car sometimes. As unemployed buying is out the window and I guess I only played my 45s when I got something new to me. A static collection is very boring. ROD
Garswood Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 All I can say is my wife's name on SS is Soul Widow dont think we're married to the same woman, but last night in bed i thought she shouted "dave", then i realised she said "behave"

I look for new (to me) records every day, listen to my Ipod or play vinyl / CDs every day, bore my partner with 'facts' all the time - she likes the music just not obsessive - still get very excited when new records arrive (!) through the door, always reading Manifesto or constantly flicking through Manships books etc and generally am pretty obsessed... DJing tonight, cant wait! Ste.
