Russ Vickers Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 Just found this thread belatedly........................promoting the Uptown Down South Soul Nights & Nighters was a fantastic experience & I am so pleased that you guys remember it fondly, its not until you see the play lists that you realise the quality of the sounds that were played. Good times, maybe when I return from the US I'll get the ball rolling again, its about time the South had another Nighter outside of the Smoke with some credibility........................what do you think, can it be done. Steve I'm just about to go on vacation for 3 weeks, but will PM you on my return, as I have nothing really from those nights & would dearly love to have some tapes to remind me. Cheers Russ

I've got some more somewhere, when I find them I'll post those up two! Cheers Steve
Stevecee Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) en years + later I found my tapes again so like the Yate one I posted earlier in another thread, here's part of the above playlist, more to follow over the next few weeks. I did find a note in the box to send copies to Russ, Eddie Hubbard, John Smith and few others, no idea if I actually did, if not hopefully this will make up for it! Edited March 9, 2017 by SteveCee
Guest son of stan Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Some great records there, but 'late 90s'? Really? Almost all of them are very well-known oldies from the 70s / 80s... Edited March 15, 2017 by son of stan

Almost all of them are very well-known oldies from the 70s / 80s... Yeah definately from late 90s, Dramatics, Pat Brown, Jeff Floyd & Aleshure were all 90s releases. I think the second upload was more of an oldies spot until Eddie Hubbard Djs, but its funny because on the 1st upload you can hear people talking about there is too much modern stuff and this wouldn't got played at Wigan! Glad you enjoyed them. Steve
Roburt Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 The word about those nights certainly got about. At the time, I was contacted by a young guy from Scandanavia who was attending a short course at Oxford University when they were running. He was a soul fan & asked if it would be possible for me to pick him up & take him along to the night being staged whilst he was in the UK. Being a northerner & friendly type, I did as he wished and he had a great time (he even bought a few rekkids). 2

Yes there was a buzz about them, I always felt that over the course of a night you could hear just about anything and the list of guest DJs was very strong and thats before we touch on the Niters held there and the live artist performances. There was even a short tv feature with Mark Randell, couldn't find it on youtube tho.

I remember vividly the night I realised that we may have something here.....at the bar & one guy on my left says 'Russ there's too much Modern' then guy on my right says 'Russ too much Northern', totally unaware of each other, I just had a rye smile to myself & thought, we must have this about right then & I think we did....just about lol. Best wishes Russ
