Cheers. Two more eighties venues needed for 100. Will edit them in when and if we get there.

Criteria: Between 01/1/1980 - 31/12/89. A regular (at least more than a few) soul night or allnighter within the UK.

The EXIT CENTRE was a one-off while they secured the YMCA venue.

There were also quite a few all-dayers at the TAMDHU in Bannockburn.

Also in the very early 80's there were a series of excellent all-dayers at the TRANMARE HOTEL in TRANENT outside Edinburgh

Regular soul nights, 6TS used to do the Phoenix in Cavendish Square back of Oxford circus.

Masses of one or two off pub venues. Tony Smith's Carved Red Lion on Essex Rd ran for a while and there wre a million mod revival soul nights we used to go along to occassionally

you've listed a couple twice, swan manfield is one

Jaspers for York not Jesters as i said

plus

Highwaymans Holt all-dyers (Mainly Modern) Snaith out Selby way

Romeo & Juliets Hull All dayers -saw Jesse James live there

Seventh Heaven Doncaster bank holiday dayers

Posted

Probably won't qualify for the list as i only think it was on twice, still worth a mention though.

(apologies if someone's already mentioned it.)

But does anyone remember an all niter Guy Hennigan put on at the

RAZZMATAZZ CLUB in Brierly Hill ?

The venue was absolutely tiny and there were mirrors everywhere!

I think everyone must've banged into at least one before realising!!

And if you were able to have a dance without falling off the dance floor ..... YOU WERE A GOD!

Northern soul in the 80's - absolutely fantastic!!

Been a lot of talk about the 80's being a low point on the northern scene and last week a comment of "during the eighties when the scene was on it's knees" was posted and I thought that was a bit OTT.

I got into Northern 1982/83 and there seemed to be a fair choice of venues that were reasonably well attended. During the early/mid and late eighties we went to, 100 Club, Leighton Buzzard, St Ives, Peterborough, Loughborough, Leicester and Stafford amongst others.

I appreciate although the eighties were by no means a high point of the scene's history compared with the seventies heyday or the early ninetees resurgence. However all the talk that northern soul all but died out during the eighties, is I think an inaccurate overstatement and is unfair on the promoters of the venues of that time.

I'm sure there are other eighties venue's I have missed that we didn't go to. Not sure whether this 'eighties was dead' feeling is a general consensus, or were there folk that went out, danced and like me had a good time back then?

Me and my mate Reg got into it then as young mods and I loved it to say the least and have stayed with it ever since, despite having an anti Northern boyfriend for a while but I still went places and just lied to him! Suffice it to say, that whether it was poor in the overall scheme of things, it was bloody brilliant for those of us who hadn't been around for what passed before. I appreciate that nothing is ever as good as when you first got into it and I say similar now but it's still good now.

There's a clip from The Old Grey WHistle Test on You Tube and it shows us all going to a niter at Tony's New Empress Ballroom in Blackburn in the mid 80's and me and my mate Reg were there walking up the stairs with our mod gear on, carrying a suit bag each with our spare clothes in at one of our first niters, not knowing that soulies carried a bag not a bloody suit holder! and we walked up acting like we'd done it loads of times and then danced like little mod girls and watched all the brilliant dancers spinning and stomping and gliding and were mesmerised. We copied and studied them and realised we'd found our way in life....

How good a post is that :D

I was there that night when Debbie Troops and the crew were setting up. They did quite a few interviews which remained in the can including one with Ion, Kitch and Dean Anderson, with me behind the camera man trying to put them off. Wonder if they're still sitting on a shelf somewhere.

Low point, you must be joking, the mid 80,s thru early 90,s was incredible, we weren't saddled with this pathetic nostalgia friends re-united bollox that is sweeping the nation now

Kev

Totally agree Kev - the Up North weekenders were bursting with great Soul tunes and visiting artists like Sam Dees , Mary Love , Charles Walker and many more. And living in London there was some fantastic Soul nights mainly for some reason in the Farringdon area and EC district and also Dingwalls - not forgetting the 100 club and walking into the toilet to see Tony Middleton getting ready to go on stage isn't easily forgotten.I bought some great Soul records during this period from places like Record Corner by singers like Rufus Hunter , Debbie S, Billy Always , Willie Hobbs , Sandra Wright and a recall a real open attitude to tempo and an emphasis on good Soul music.

Cheers

A man of taste Manus, thats for sure, yeah, remember that period being more underground, most people around then really into soul music, it wasn't hip or trendy, the music was the draw, loads and loads of great mid-tempo stuff getting played, great days

Dayers were still on at the Ritz in the 80's, Berlins had nights on and went to dayers at a wine bar type place off the top end of King Street in Manchester too, name escapes me.

I used to go to Berlin to listen to Colin Curtis back then, but it was more jazz/latin/funk by then to be honest there, if my memory serves, which it frequently doesn't. Got heavily in to jazz/funk 81 onward, Cassanellis in Standish, Studio in Nantwich, Jazz Defectors and funk/soul dayers at the Ritz in Manchester etc, it didn't last.

Should have stayed on the Northern Scene me thinks now.
