Guest remus
I always felt like i fell between two stools in that i went to Wigan in the dying years 79-81 and then on to Stafford, Leicester, Hinckley, Morcambe, 100 club etc.. in the 80s. The scene in only a year between Wigan closing and stafford getting up and running felt very different straight away (memories are hazy) and it felt like travelling in time. Music was much more important and less people were dancing and just sitting listening to records or talking about them. I remember plenty of soul nights back then in very small venues where dancing was almost positively discouraged and you were there to talk records. Glad that's changed. One of the bad things about the 80s was a real sense that if you didn't know much you were an idiot. There was a real musical snobbery that was pretty nasty and i remember a few people famous on the scene for remorselessly taking the piss out of newcomers or people who didn't have a vast knowledge. That has definately changed, or maybe we've all just grown up a bit. It was definately a new era, at least it felt like it at the time, and in my opinion it changed the scene for the better. Anyone remember Benson's nightclub? Where was that again? Matt link There was a Bensons over Oxford way that used to hold a few Northern events! Simsy
Okay here is a list of some of the venues mentioned on the thread so far. (Apologies for any inaccuracies or dupes) In no particular order; 100 Club Leighton Buzzard St Ives Peterborough Loughborough Leicester Stafford Blackburn Sheffield Morecambe Hinckley Coventry Whitchurch Keele Abraham Moss Newcastle Darlington Burnley Warrington Rotherham Clifton Hall Sheffield Romeo & Juliets Rock City (Notts) KGB (Sheffield) Turn-Ups (Sheffield) Fusion (Chesterfield) Winter Gardens (Cleethorpes) Bensons (Bradford) Parr Hall (Warrington) Tiffanys (Wigan/Sheffield etc) Fife Aberdeen Music Hall Arbroath Smokeys Glenrothes Leven Edinburgh Queens Hall Kelsey Kerridge Wigan Casino The '81 Soul Club Leighton Buzzard Clifton Hall Queens Hall Bradford Carousel Manchester Civic Hall Brighouse Droylesden Wirrina Empress Ballroom (Mexborough) Bubbles (Leicester) Drill Hall (Lincoln) Assembly Rooms (Derby) Barnsley - Port Cullis Londoner Tracky Club Redbrook Hotel (Rotherham) Windmill Assembly Rooms Canklow w m clu Shotts Allenton Miners Welfare Mansfield Swan all-nighters Chesterfield "Winding Wheel" TAC Yarmouth weekenders Trotters soul nights Mansfield Tudor Barn Warsop Southport weekenders Fleetwood Barrow Thorne Canal Tavern Dunstable So there we go there are sixty five (or thereabouts) different venues listed above. So I think this helps to remove the myths both urban and rural that the eighties was a weak spot in the scenes history. Perhaps from now on folk will be mindful that there was a lot going on during this decade and many a soulie had many a killer frikkin time back then. PS, this is only a so far list, so if anyone knows of any other soul nights/all-nighters - regular do's etc from the 1980's that they can add, please feel free. Rob Wigley
Rock City was a good venue and being local (mansfield) didn't find it that threatening. Also saw Jnr Walker there. the Palais was still going strong as well in Nottingham tracky Club in Barnsley (chalky & Graham importing sounds from 100 club) with derek grenhoff playing The Magnetics and Bub doing the oldies Take 2 Sheffield All nighters (Alan millington)were great Newbury soul club, upstairs venue, not the football club, Ian clark on the decks great !! The twisted Wheel re-opened 1987 The Cricketers all nighter in Wigan Sloski's (however you spell it) Manchester somewhere near the Apollo all-nighters run by the Morecombe lad carlton Inn Morecombe saw Phillip mitchell there Leeds all nighter around 1987/88 mansfield leisure centre all nighters I'll think of more ---my brain hurts ! Steve G
Rock City was also evening do's, sort of 8-2. Whilst mentioning Peterborough, we mustn't forget Papa Luigis moddun evenings mid 80's which Nick Gilbert and myself organised. Plus there were loads of little do's round Stamford way - Mick Cooper, Russ etc. organised these. St Ives also enjoyed a brief revival, though I tended to concerntrate in the modern methodology at this point, and remember the northern room as being pretty basic. Fleet and Wirrina were on at various times through the decade, with various promotors and once at the same time  . Always felt the Fleet was the more "cozy" of the two venues. That being said I was actually DJing when there was the bomb scare at the Wirrina - I can tell you when everyone came back inside you could have filled the dancefloor playing trad jazz everyone was so "up for it"! Fun times. Chrisseo - no prob with people having time off for kids, we've all been there, and that's not the point I was saying. Instead the point was that some people think the scene died in the 80's while everyone was away - this thread shows that it didn't die, far from it infact, it was vibrant, and perhaps more underground. But there again after Casino Classics etc that was no bad thing..... Link to comment Social source share

Guest
I can't comment about the venues back then as I'm too young but there's a lot of learned from the attitudes of that time. The 80s scene had a lot going for it and many of todays top DJs and collectors came out of it. The characters/passion/committment (call it what you will) of that time certainly appeals to me. Taking a different tack for a moment, also there seems to be a lot of undeserved 'cred' surrounding the 80s. Most of it is justified, but people seem to be more ready to forget the crap that was played. Often folks namedrop Stafford in a very subjective way (I must continue to emphasise that I can only talk from the playlists I've read about lol). Certainly I think Stafford was as much about an ethos and progressive attitude as it was about specific sounds. If something didn't work, it went to the back of the box and people were more hungry for new stuff than today.Today, I see and hear people discuss the oldies brigade with sneering contempt and yet, somehow, looking back to the 80s is ok as it was "the golden period." The here and now is the most important scene of them all. I bang on about this all the time like the bore I am - but the creeping nostalgia in all aspects of the scene leaves me cold! Hammy link Hi Hammy, I agree with you, I remember at the time, a lot of people didnt like Stafford, but I always did, to me it was a turning point that said that you can listen to 'modern and oldies' together. Of course, nowadays, every loves Stafford!! Link to comment Social source share

Guest Byrney
BDK - Rock City was a moddun secret. Not just Modern Steve I'm glad to say. The venue was run by Jonathon Woodliffe and it ran one week Modern, one week up front 60s; with Rob Marriot, Gary Rushbrooke (I think) Jim Wensiora Djing and I think Kitch did some spots back in the day. amusing as upstairs had a heavy rock night on, with the odd one coming down to head bang to JD Bryant. 50p a pint, but luckily I knew the lad behind the bar from the matches - 50p for a round of 4 pints Link to comment Social source share
Neiljon31
dom polski club at Bedford, 2 or 3 modern nighters there run by Mick Godfrey. Rock City modern nights were sometimes pretty quiet but were always good, had regulars from Derby coming over, Notts folk and Kevin and Gordon who came nearly every fortnight from Glasgow. Also 'soul frank' from Southampton who got everywhere by train as he worked for BR, always used to wear his BR STAFF t -shirt. Adam did the earlier ones with Arthur and Sam, Robin and Graeme Ellis also did them regularly. At the nighters it was modern downstairs with 60's etc upstairs, Tom Jackson from Scotland played at one or both nighters. Think Dave Raistrick ran the soul nights, Jonathon was manager at Rock City at the time. Link to comment Social source share
