We have a D.J over here who drops a record then dances to it!!

Brilliant...That's a music lover..and his name is PIP

Cracking fellah!!

Pip is one of the most enthusiastic DJs on the scene as well as one of the best. Love his style. Always with quality dancers! Danny Duggan is another dancer friendly DJ from across the Irish sea.

that reminds me dave . i was very close to catching you on the dance floor at your birthday bash but i wasn,t quick enough with the camera . im sure you read my mind as i reached for it ...

I think some people are shy aren't they that's why they don't get up and have a dance. Each to their own I guess.

The funniest in terms of "Entertainment Value" in a nice funny way - was some bloke down 100 club who would be dancing and doing everything else at the same time - i.e. - answer his mobile, text on his mobile, read his mobile, light up a fag (before the ban came in), smoke a fag, wave to his mate, talk to his other mate, scratch his leg and believe it or not..yes this is true - grab his comb from his pocket and comb his hair lol all whilst his legs still moving. Never seen anything like it. A real comedy moment!

Just a lighthearted Friday thread...

Was thinking last night about what a fantastic DJ Johnny Fingers is, yet i've never seen him dance. Got me to thinking about all the other fantastic DJs who don't dance, Butch is another one... I don't think that i've seen Mick H dance either.

I'm not having a go by any means, just wondered if there was a reason.

Karl Heard, Sean Chapman & Jumping Joan are all 'DJs what dance', how come some don't?

Discuss.

karl herd and joan dance to other peoples sets........cause they love the music :)

I have a female friend who has been listening to my records for the past couple of years and has fallen in love with the music. She has now been to a few events and gets up on the floor for a shimmy - and dances with a BIG smile on her face :)

Anyway, her style of dancing is not what you would typically see from the female dancers - but she enjoys herself on the floor non the less

At one event we were at this guy approaches her and says, "you need to learn how to dance 'properly', watch me and learn" :D

I'm sure the guy meant well however that sort of remark could possibly put some off of venturing out on the floor

Fortunatly she doesn't give a monkeys fig what others think - and her dancing hasn't changed any

Now that's what I'm talking about!

You got me thinking about when we went to the weekender in Seattle.

There was this guy there who didn't so much 'dance' as throw his arms around wildly and shake his head, and whatever else he could shake, as violently as he could.

We all thought he was fantastic, but I couldn't help thinking about how people over here would react to him at a venue.

Not a nice feeling I can tell you. :)

Anyway, the guy turned out to be a very well known record dealer in the States. What a star!

The same sort of thing happened to me circa 1975,

Had danced my heart out at the youth club for weeks thought I was the dogs bo**ocks,

The time came to go to a proper soul night, with real soulies,The venue was Blackbeat at Bolton,Russ and Richard were the DJ's,

I got in by the luck of the god's,I was 15 at the time and it was an over 18's do,

Anyway my record of the moment was "Time"---Edwin Starr,

Being what they called a DIVVY at the time,I asked my mates "Do you think they will have it",

Go and ask them,they say,So I do,

Twenty minutes later "Time" starts and up I jump,Cool as hell (Remember I was the dog's),

About 40 seconds in after my 3rd try at a leg kick,This girl turns round to me and says"give it a break kid people are trying to dance here"

The worst thing is about this,is I told my mates what she said NIGHTMARE,

All the way home"give us a break kid blah blah blah"

I met her at Wigan about 6 months later (cant remember her name)Was that you she said,I'm so sorry!!!

Just keep on dancing or listening its the only answer

Re Wigan DJs

I've seen richard Searling dancing to modern.

Dave Evison used to dance at Wigan.

Tony - Soul Sam - he danced to "I'll be around" by The Spinners when we were Djing in Spain......first time I'd ever seen it. not bad too for a guy drawing his pension.

Cliff - who are the people without any thythm then?

Not from a personal point of view (I'm not shy  ) but from a general point of view...I think some people might be a little intimidated by the dance floor...technically...the Northern scene has some of the best dancers out there...even the not so good dancers are far better than a lot of other scenes as far as having rhythm...so for someone who just enjoys the occasional boogie...to put yourself out there to be looked at by the chinstrokers at the side of the floor can be nothing other than daunting i'm sure!

Posted

I'm interested in those who used to dance, but have declared that they have "retired". The only times that I haven't been able to dance (having done my back in) at a soul night or nighter, I've felt quite uneasy.....

Anybody out there who's packed in dancing, but still out and about and loving the music - how easy was it? (I can't keep still  ) Did you find your music tastes and venue preferences changing? It'll come to us all........

I think shyness/physical disability (often not obvious) is a much-underestimated demotivator. How many dancers would we have if alchohol wasn't available?

I have admiration for anybody who gets out on the floor, regardless of ability, as long as they show consideration for other dancers.

There are exceptions, but I have more respect for DJs who do dance (if they can). Apart from 'leading from the front', I've seen a few comments on here about the brilliance of dodgy venues from DJs who stayed safely behind the turntables all night.

This old chestnut again. There's a variety of reasons as mentioned before, why people don't dance, mine is a combination of laziness, obesity, being sat behind boxes of sales. Each to his own & all that, but to make some bizarre link between D.J.'s that dance, and the quality of music played is unfounded. Butch and Andy Dyson are not currently known for hitting the dancefloor for Hours at a time, yet in many's Eyes are the best D.J.'s in the country. Surely, It's how the music takes you inwardly! Next we'll be having "Who's the biggest Soul fan - based on the number of patches you have sewed onto your clothing"

Des

This is a good point. Surely it's about the music too, not just about being a dance scene?.

peeeeez me off big time, and I still have not fully excepted the fact that i can no longer dance.

back and leg problem means that it cripples me if i do  bloody frustrating :shades:

last time i danced i ended up being signed off of work for a month and had to have a steriod epidural to help with the pain.

on a visit to Bridgwater, (a must if you haven't been.....or if you have) i was talking to Dr Pickles and a track came on that i hadn't heard before and it hooked me. I wanted to make my apologies and get on the floor but thought it would be too rude. good thing really as it would have probably meant another hospital vistit

on the up-side, i'm waiting to see a specialist at the hospital, so there is a chance i can have a little shimmy again:thumbup:

...and if I do....watch out girls.....cause I'm sex on legs

'Tis true.. seldom will ya see me make any sort of 'real' presence on the dance floor these days. I have enough problems just walking !! laugh.gif

I'm not about to profess 'rights & wrongs' etc.. There are none !! It is ALL down to how each individual chooses to derive their own, 'personal', satisfaction' as to how they then choose to express their emotions. Instead.. I'll just relay my PERSONAL slant on the 'topic', thus:

There is certainly no 'conscious' intention on my part NOT to dance - Not that I'd ever had reason to contemplate it previously - but I also feel confident it isn't a 'sub-conscious' thing, either.

On the 'odd'/'rare' occasion.. It IS (actually) possible to 'catch me in the act' !! Indeed.. at the inaugural night of the Groovesville Soul Club (Hitchin, Herts) - earlier this year - I had to severely reprimand Pete Hullat, - complaining most profusely to him - for being (ir)responsible for invoking a 'Marathon' dance session from me. I don't remember (now), the tunes concerned, but the combination of those three particular 45's DEMANDED I utilise the medium of the dance floor (on that occasion, at least) to release the emotions each of them stirred in me. I distinctly remember - almost half-way through the last of the three - how incredibly HEAVY my calf muscles felt. A feeling I usually begin to experience toward the end of a 'first' dance.. Never mind THREE dances in succession !! I guess that is part of the reason for lack of 'frequent' floor action on my behalf - the lack of sufficient muscle power in the legs. This, I think, gives credence to an opinion expressed above, in the thread.

I don't see that as the main reason, though, as to why I am (no longer..) 'viewed' as a 'non-dancer'. For one.. I usually can't remain in one place long enough to achieve a dance - I like to be on the move & flitting here, there, & everywhere (in case I MISS anything  ). Additionally, as opposed to the (taken for granted) definition of full-on dancing (usually involving 'athletic-like' limb movements - particularly of the legs) - I prefer to express the emotions that songs evoke in me in much less energetic ways. I suppose the obvious one being through my 'singing' along to the lyrics & mimicking the emotional intent (feeling a 'One-ness') implied by the vocals & lyrics of the records.

Another 'common' one (for me) is repetitive clapping to a particular part of a tune. Usually where a musical bridge takes place, or the last three or four bars of the record to fade-out. In-itself, a form of self-emotive 'emphasis' but (nonetheless) a 'personal expression' of the emotions felt - just as rhythmic (or not..) movement(s) of the limbs in tandem to the beat/tempo of music by 'The Dancers' is 'personal expression' Just different forms of expression being the only 'real' difference, methinks.

Put a different way: You could use the analogy of the varying ways to relay, say, a 'message': A Telephone ; Sending of an email ; a Postal Letter ; Telegram ; via a Messenger ; or in person.. ALL these 'different' methods are capable of achieving successful delivery - but different people use or prefer different methods !!

I know, that - quite 'automatically' (and without chance - or will - to prevent myself) my whole body can become 'hypnotised' by the 'spell' of a class tune. Suddenly finding myself committing acts like 'swaying' from side to side, maybe, or performing 'subtle' movements - be it just an arm (maybe both arms) - perhaps a periodic leg movement to one side, then back to it's original position. Or even just a wrist/hand movement.. All the aforementioned are ways 'I' will more commonly use in 'visually' expressing, MYSELF, to the music I love. This reinforces a sentiment mentioned earlier in the thread - where you DON'T have the control - and before you realise, you're up on the dance floor 'giving it some'.

My first visit to Middleton - the Willingham Suite, it was - I remember being located, (rooted, almost) close to the decks as Carl & Maria provided the musical entertainment. I can remember Maria introducing (one of my all time faves - Flash McKinley) 'I'll Rescue You' and, before you could bat an eyelid, I was so 'completely overcome' by this slab of class Soul music that the desire to express myself via 'proper dancing' was totally automatic. A desire executed with such speed I found myself 'on the floor' (doing my 'move to the groove') without even realising I'd covered the distance, from where I spectated, to that of what I'd claimed as 'my floor space' for the duration (located toward the rear of the dance floor) where I haplessly imitated dance moves !! ph34r.gif

Another viewpoint or observation: When I'm behind the decks - in charge of the music management for a set - again, I just cannot help how my 'person' reacts to the tunes I offer up.. For that hour I may be in command of the turntables, but my body is at the mercy of Quality Soul Music. The music dictates exactly how my body reacts and exactly what it does - whether discreet or prolific - any bodily movement is far beyond my control (not that I ever want to control it.. ).

I'll finish my little 'slant' on this topic by stating that I, Honestly, know of NOT ONE PERSON that DIDN'T begin their 'Soul Scene Career' by serving a 'Dancers' Apprenticeship'. Only as the years progress(ed) do/did individuals find their personal 'calling'. With me, it now includes the passion for presenting the music to help sate 'The Dancers' OWN calling. I progressed into various different aspects of our beloved scene.. Areas of interest particular to what 'Rocks MY Boat' - which includes the privilege of 'Disciple' duties - aiming to be a 'Good' servant of our 'Church' and help spread 'The Gospel' by delivering 'Sermons' to abet the 'Spiritual Satisfaction' & gratification of each & every 'Congregation'. To send them onward with 'Inner-Peace' & a contentment.. An appreciative, satisfied understanding of the messages delivered during the 'Service'. Whilst, at the same time, ALWAYS remaining a devout servant myself - striving to learn the lessons of the 'Good Word' from the 'Sermons' presented by other Disciples of Soul. Constantly 'Soul-Searching' & praying for some 'Divine Enlightenment' & 'Spiritual Guidance' toward coming up with 'Toons' to spin that will 'Rock the Boat(S)' of 'The Dancers' !!

That old saying : 'To Each Their Own'.. Is sounding more, & MORE, 'CLICHE' - like the cliche it is - with every passing word.. :)

Fingers..

We were all dancers long before any of us were deejay's. Isn't that what got us into the scene from the outset? I know i still spend most of my nights on the dancefloor and can't wait to return once my spot is over. I sometimes wonder if big ego's keep some of the deejay's from dancing. Oh well i hope i have'nt opened a can of worms with that one as no offence is made to past or present deejay's on the scene. Stay soulful and keep dancing. Tony T BONE. OZ. K.T.F.

It was a mistake to list some DJs specifically. The thread was meant to be about people who go out week in week out but don't get on the floor. It just struck me that there's these great DJs who have the floors packed but they don't strut their stuff themselves! thumbsup.gif

Great DJ's don't dance.... Hmmm I beg to differ :wicked: .

I have to say apart from being 1 of my top 3 favourite DJ's,

Neil Jones always dances and with the same passion as he has when he's behind the decks playing the tunes,

And "oh my days" He does it very very well :thumbsup::boxing:

I've known plenty of non-dancers over the years, either through shyness or just because they were involved in other activities, some legit, others not so legit. I think it depends on how you feel, if the music is moving you etc; I've spent whole nights in lounges, but also long periods on the stages and in the corridors of venues. Nattering was as much a part of the night as trawling through records boxes and hitting the floor. Ficklefingers, that font is almost painful to read mate. :-)

Butch used to dance...Ive seen Mick dance aswell. Guy, Keb, Karl Rhodes, Ion, Marco, James, Heiki, Bob C, ...there are a few that do and plenty that dont. Ive never understood how a dj catering for dancers, doesn't dance!! If the tune doesn't move him, why is it expected to move us?! But, each to his own

peeeeez me off big time, and I still have not fully excepted the fact that i can no longer dance.

back and leg problem means that it cripples me if i do :( bloody frustrating

last time i danced i ended up being signed off of work for a month and had to have a steriod epidural to help with the pain.

on a visit to Bridgwater, (a must if you haven't been.....or if you have) i was talking to Dr Pickles and a track came on that i hadn't heard before and it hooked me. I wanted to make my apologies and get on the floor but thought it would be too rude. good thing really as it would have probably meant another hospital vistit :D

on the up-side, i'm waiting to see a specialist at the hospital, so there is a chance i can have a little shimmy again

And the result this time for not excepting the fact..........

The pictures don't really show the bruises, but you get the idea :(

The music hooked me on Saturday night and I just had to have a little wiggle

A few painful twinges in the back but I thought, "What he heck, this might be my last chance of having a boogie" so I swung my pants for most of the night :D

When I got back to my mates house I paid the price when my back twinged & and my legs gave way...AT THE TOP OF HIS STAIRS

Over I went, from the top of the stairs all the way to the bottom, ending in a crumpled heap - letting out a pathetic, whimpering laugh...you know the one, where you should be crying in pain but do that silly laugh instead?

As we say in Dorset, "That'll learn ya":thumbsup::thumbsup:
