Guest Mrs Simsy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Just a lighthearted Friday thread... Was thinking last night about what a fantastic DJ Johnny Fingers is, yet i've never seen him dance. Got me to thinking about all the other fantastic DJs who don't dance, Butch is another one... I don't think that i've seen Mick H dance either. I'm not having a go by any means, just wondered if there was a reason. Karl Heard, Sean Chapman & Jumping Joan are all 'DJs what dance', how come some don't? Discuss.
pikeys dog Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Too fat, trick knees, no rhythm, sweat too much, too busy gassing at the bar.... and that's just me.
Guest Bearsy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 all the best djs are dancers cos they know what it takes to make someone dance each to thier own and anyway this scene is all about dancing just ask the dancers anyway this scene aint just about dancing just ask those that dont dance its all about the music

Jumpinjoan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Butch used to dance quite a lot years ago. And I have seen Mick H get down with his bad self too on occasion. But this is one of those questions you will never get an answer to. I sometimes think whether it's because some DJ's think themselves above dancing to other DJ's spots? Which is stupid because DJ's only put the records on the turntable, they didn't make them. That actually reminds me of someone's signature on here a while back (can't think whose for the life of me though) "DJ's are nothing but a dancer's labourer"... and how very true!
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Don't DJ so much anymore, but I've always danced - in fact, I feel that the first rule of DJ'ing for any potential spinner, when picking a record, should be "would you dance to this yourself if someone played it now"...

Very true, they are just the hired help. We should be keeping 20 of them to a house, and have a gangmaster to beat the cr*p out of them every time happy days style R&B gets played. On a more positive note, do you think it may be that when they do a gig for someone they try to take it seriously, so dont get mullered like the rest of us and throw some bad shapes? I have always wondered how people who clearly have a major passion for the the music they seek out and collect, can resist getting down. Just more disciplined than the rest of us maybe?

Don't get me wrong, there's nights when i don't dance because i'm too busy yabbering but like you say, when you have a major passion for the music & a certain song comes on that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up....how can you resist a boogie?

Karl and Joan never stop .I can take 15 minutes to finish a sentence, with dance "breaks" . Have seen Butch and Mick dance over the years... The fact that they're record dealers may be one of the major reasons they "don't" dance Would imagine that Fingers is rather ungainly on the dance floor so its probably for the best that he stays sat down gossiping Actually think I've seen most DJs dance - even if only occaisionally... The funniest being Shifty who didn't have single ounce of rythem or co-ordination and had to be very drunk to get on the dancefloor, and then his legs would go in all directions, with his arms flailing in the other and anyone within a 3m radius would get troddon on

We had a few friends of friends with us at one of Nick Browns nights in Leicester Square. I was chatting with some of them when the Martells ccame on. Mid sentence I just excused myself and had a little dance. Mary Ann explained that I wasnt being rude, its just what Mike does at soul nights. Anyway, I've danced next to Mr Chapman. He should be confined to the stage, with no parole
Guest Mark Holmes Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Did Levine, Searling and Winstanley ever dance? Was too busy dancing to police the other dancers. One thing I am eternally gratefull is that the music dictates whether you dance not your Auntie Agnes or "best friend" saying "come on get up have a dance...enjoy yourself"
Tabs Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 It was garv. I'm not really an anorak Only remeber that as he is a friend and that signature struck a oh so true chord. Simsy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 As thread title says 'people who don't dance' - not just DJ's.. I do know a few soulies that go to nights & nighters and don't dance. Never ceases to amaze me. It's a dance scene!
Dave Rimmer Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Bad knees stop me dancing. I still occasionally dance but suffer for it the next day. In fact people take photos when I dance because it is so occasionally.

Upthejunction Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I know, when i saw you dancing at Cleethorpes i fumbled for my camera! Would be pretty boring if none of us danced, don't think the dj's would like it either, be like a comedian who didn't get any laughs.
KevH Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 S'pose sometimes the dancefloor can look a little scary ,depending on your frame of mind.Like a deep wide ocean waiting to swallow you up .whoops, think those pro-plus are kicking in. What about that moment, when you're ready to go,next record,no problem, whatever it is,get on there,i'm having some of this...........then you miss it.The moment's gone........ aah well.......
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Did Levine, Searling and Winstanley ever dance? Was too busy dancing to police the other dancers. One thing I am eternally gratefull is that the music dictates whether you dance not your Auntie Agnes or "best friend" saying "come on get up have a dance...enjoy yourself" Ian used to dance, yes. I can remember him dancing 'Northern' to "You're Ready Now" at my then local venue, The Orsett Cock in Orsett, Essex, much to the amazement of the resident DJs Mike Franz and a not-yet-famous Chris Hill. And he was certainly dancing when I first used to come up to the Mecca, and before he started DJing there. Dunno about Richard or Russ, though. Possibly the former, unlikely the latter...
Guest Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 peeeeez me off big time, and I still have not fully excepted the fact that i can no longer dance. back and leg problem means that it cripples me if i do bloody frustrating last time i danced i ended up being signed off of work for a month and had to have a steriod epidural to help with the pain. on a visit to Bridgwater, (a must if you haven't been.....or if you have) i was talking to Dr Pickles and a track came on that i hadn't heard before and it hooked me. I wanted to make my apologies and get on the floor but thought it would be too rude. good thing really as it would have probably meant another hospital vistit on the up-side, i'm waiting to see a specialist at the hospital, so there is a chance i can have a little shimmy again
Md Records Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 This old chestnut again. There's a variety of reasons as mentioned before, why people don't dance, mine is a combination of laziness, obesity, being sat behind boxes of sales. Each to his own & all that, but to make some bizarre link between D.J.'s that dance, and the quality of music played is unfounded. Butch and Andy Dyson are not currently known for hitting the dancefloor for Hours at a time, yet in many's Eyes are the best D.J.'s in the country. Surely, It's how the music takes you inwardly! Next we'll be having "Who's the biggest Soul fan - based on the number of patches you have sewed onto your clothing" Des

Jumpinjoan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I wonder if there is anyone on the scene who has never danced, not even once?
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Me too....I find it quite amazing that I know lots of people who do not grace the dance floor, some are DJ's but most are not, in general it's possibly because they can't (or think they can't) or just don't want to....me, I can't keep off the darn thing! Roger Williams Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I feel that the first rule of DJ'ing for any potential spinner, when picking a record, should be "would you dance to this yourself if someone played it now"... As good DJ'ing advice as you'll get, that should be the opening paragraph in the 'How to DJ' books. I've always smiled when I've seen DJ's dancing to the 'right' or 'in the know' records - they wouldn't be seen dead, dancing to 'run of the mill' stuff everyone knows, but as soon as a DJ comes on with a rarity they're after, they're up dancing with this 'I know this and you lot don't' look on their faces. I do a bit of DJing but I prefer to embarrass myself behind the decks rather than in front of them.

Simsy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I wonder if at the back of folks minds there is an age where one sort of voluntarily retires from dancing? .. Shouldn't be? But will you still be stepping about (if there's a scene) when you're 75? Would you bother to go to do's still if you were a dancer and now aren't?
Jumpinjoan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Would you bother to go to do's still if you were a dancer and now aren't? I'd like to think so. But I would definitely be tripping up any dancers that happened to pass me on their way to the dance floor
Mark B Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I dont dance much now as i can only really have one or two dances mainly my knee wont allow it, also unfit i wish i could dance a bit more as it would help in keeping fit. mark

Guest Mark Holmes Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I wonder which venue will have an Oldies Room...A Modern Room...and a Assistive Walking Devices (AWD) Room? Maybe Rimmer the Zimmer will be the first ever DJ in that room
Guest nomad Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I wonder if there is anyone on the scene who has never danced, not even once? Harpo for one. He calls it dancing but Im not so sure Dare say Im gonna get slapped for this Nomad
Harry Crosby Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 If any of you guys have seen the film THE JERK, when steve martin tries dancing along with his adoptive black family, well thats why i don`t dance, i start off ok, then everything no matter what tempo looks like i`m dancing to THE GEMS-I`LL BE THERE, at least one of my friends had the guts to tell me one night, whilst i was dancing to FRANK DELL
Pat Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Bad knees stop me dancing. I still occasionally dance but suffer for it the next day. In fact people take photos when I dance because it is so occasionally. I still dash to the dancefloor but Alan has the same problem as Dave . He had to give up dancing about 4 years ago as he can't walk the next day if he does . Pat
ImberBoy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I caught Dave Rimmer out side Middelton, I thought he was mucking about at first but he was well in the groove! ">
The Tempest Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Bollocks DJ'S don't dance !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Having served my apprenticeship on the wee cold dancefloors of scotland in the 80's - every bloody dj danced , probably to keep warm !!!!!!!!!! Keb Darge , Colin Law , Andy Dennison , Jock o ' Connor , Alan + Steve Walls , Acky , - all those dj's danced before AND after their spots !! regardless of times , Nuff said ,
Guest marge Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 It was a mistake to list some DJs specifically. The thread was meant to be about people who go out week in week out but don't get on the floor. It just struck me that there's these great DJs who have the floors packed but they don't strut their stuff themselves! Didn't read your initial post as meaning that Dj's that don't dance don't make the best DJ's, given that you opened the thread with: "Was thinking last night about what a fantastic DJ Johnny Fingers is, yet i've never seen him dance" And yes, when I've heard him he's a fantastic DJ, so there was no implication, as I read your post, that spinners can't dance! DJ's who dance - Keb Darge - not mentioned so far on this thread???? and I've seen Sean Chapman get on the floor and get back in time to cue the next record. Ian Levine was seen dancing at the last Crossfire
Mark S Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 At a do a few months ago and my wife said to me " A man of your stature shouldnt dance " so I ignored her and hit the floor a minute later I am on my arse a man of my stature shouldnt dance, bollocks ,
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 are you gonna count me in this. loads of people know i go out in Peterborough and never dance or should i say little. But my choice i like to listen to the music and as much as a lot of the same tunes not sure if you would dance to a record you know it's good but not good enough to dance to especially if you hear it loads of times. but when i hear certain records i can't not help but get to dance

No disrespect to any DJs but some folk have them up on pedestals at the end of the day they are just people with good record collections, well most of them anyway.
