Just a lighthearted Friday thread...

Was thinking last night about what a fantastic DJ Johnny Fingers is, yet i've never seen him dance. Got me to thinking about all the other fantastic DJs who don't dance, Butch is another one... I don't think that i've seen Mick H dance either.

I'm not having a go by any means, just wondered if there was a reason.

Karl Heard, Sean Chapman & Jumping Joan are all 'DJs what dance', how come some don't?

Butch used to dance quite a lot years ago. And I have seen Mick H get down with his bad self too on occasion.

But this is one of those questions you will never get an answer to.

I sometimes think whether it's because some DJ's think themselves above dancing to other DJ's spots?

Which is stupid because DJ's only put the records on the turntable, they didn't make them.

That actually reminds me of someone's signature on here a while back (can't think whose for the life of me though)

Don't DJ so much anymore, but I've always danced - in fact, I feel that the first rule of DJ'ing for any potential spinner, when picking a record, should be "would you dance to this yourself if someone played it now"...

We should be keeping 20 of them to a house, and have a gangmaster to beat the cr*p out of them every time happy days style R&B gets played.

On a more positive note, do you think it may be that when they do a gig for someone they try to take it seriously, so dont get mullered like the rest of us and throw some bad shapes?

I have always wondered how people who clearly have a major passion for the the music they seek out and collect, can resist getting down. Just more disciplined than the rest of us maybe?

The fact that they're record dealers may be one of the major reasons they "don't" dance

Would imagine that Fingers is rather ungainly on the dance floor so its probably for the best that he stays sat down gossiping

Actually think I've seen most DJs dance - even if only occaisionally... The funniest being Shifty who didn't have single ounce of rythem or co-ordination and had to be very drunk to get on the dancefloor, and then his legs would go in all directions, with his arms flailing in the other and anyone within a 3m radius would get troddon on

Don't get me wrong, there's nights when i don't dance because i'm too busy yabbering but like you say, when you have a major passion for the music & a certain song comes on that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up....how can you resist a boogie?

We had a few friends of friends with us at one of Nick Browns nights in Leicester Square. I was chatting with some of them when the Martells ccame on. Mid sentence I just excused myself and had a little dance. Mary Ann explained that I wasnt being rude, its just what Mike does at soul nights.

Anyway, I've danced next to Mr Chapman. He should be confined to the stage, with no parole

Ian used to dance, yes.

I can remember him dancing 'Northern' to "You're Ready Now" at my then local venue, The Orsett Cock in Orsett, Essex, much to the amazement of the resident DJs Mike Franz and a not-yet-famous Chris Hill.

And he was certainly dancing when I first used to come up to the Mecca, and before he started DJing there.

Dunno about Richard or Russ, though. Possibly the former, unlikely the latter...

peeeeez me off big time, and I still have not fully excepted the fact that i can no longer dance.

back and leg problem means that it cripples me if i do bloody frustrating

last time i danced i ended up being signed off of work for a month and had to have a steriod epidural to help with the pain.

on a visit to Bridgwater, (a must if you haven't been.....or if you have) i was talking to Dr Pickles and a track came on that i hadn't heard before and it hooked me. I wanted to make my apologies and get on the floor but thought it would be too rude. good thing really as it would have probably meant another hospital vistit

on the up-side, i'm waiting to see a specialist at the hospital, so there is a chance i can have a little shimmy again

Each to his own & all that, but to make some bizarre link between D.J.'s that dance, and the quality of music played is unfounded. Butch and Andy Dyson are not currently known for hitting the dancefloor for Hours at a time, yet in many's Eyes are the best D.J.'s in the country. Surely, It's how the music takes you inwardly! Next we'll be having "Who's the biggest Soul fan - based on the number of patches you have sewed onto your clothing"

As good DJ'ing advice as you'll get, that should be the opening paragraph in the 'How to DJ' books.

I've always smiled when I've seen DJ's dancing to the 'right' or 'in the know' records - they wouldn't be seen dead, dancing to 'run of the mill' stuff everyone knows, but as soon as a DJ comes on with a rarity they're after, they're up dancing with this 'I know this and you lot don't' look on their faces.

I do a bit of DJing but I prefer to embarrass myself behind the decks rather than in front of them.

I dont dance much now as i can only really have one or two dances mainly my knee wont allow it, also unfit i wish i could dance a bit more as it would help in keeping fit.

And yes, when I've heard him he's a fantastic DJ, so there was no implication, as I read your post, that spinners can't dance!

Two of the best things Ive ever heard on this site. No disrespect to any DJs but some folk have them up on pedestals at the end of the day they are just people with good record collections, well most of them anyway.
