Mace Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again I have it from high authority that this is not an R&B record, but a Northern Soul record. Ray Agee apparently woke up one fine sunny morning and decided he would hoppity skip to the recording studios and make his first and last Northern Soul record (before this scene of ours had even evolved). So please do not include this in your dirty lists of R&B records. It is not one and should never be tainted or labelled as such...

Geoff Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Geoff, I think you mean Betty James "I'm A Little Mixed Up" on Cee-Jay & Chess. ATB, Craig Cheers Craig, I had a feeling I was wrong when I wrote that post, but I'm at work without reference material of any kind. Great record that, good b side too. It was played in the main room at Walls Of Heartache Martin by your good self, of course there is only one room there, does that count?
Jaco Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 What about stuff like: Clovers - "One more time" Johnny Copeland - "Just one more time" Candy Reid - "Give me love" Wouldn't know whether or not this stuff is played in the main room, but still good nevertheless.

I was also told this Mace way back oh and the same for Hayes Cotton often remarks like this come from people who want their cake and eat it to, don't like R'n'B unless it's the big ticket variety then it's move the goal posts time and it's Northern lol stamp collectors the lot of em' lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Ged Parker Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Just ask if any of the 60's US tunes that get played in the 'main' room had charted which chart would they have been in? Say's it all really.

Was just offering an alternative point of view. After all they are both hammered to death in main rooms as the thread suggested. Seems I'm not the only one either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Kelly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angie_Stone Was also at a night recently that featured amongst others DJ'ing Joe Dutton, Ted Coulsone & Hoss & have still got the cotton wool that I removed from my ears to prove it

Guest Matt Male Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Aren't they all RnB tracks anyway? just some, we say, are Northern soul. You know what after i'd contributed i went downstairs, made a cup of coffee and thought to myself 'why did i put sub-genre...?' You're 100% right mate, twenty five odd years ago these were all played in the main room as northern soul alongside everything else, no one even mentioned R&B.

Cunnie Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 it wasn't you who should be ashamed it's modern R&B Nah don't tar them all with the same brush Davie, good & bad in all genres. Suggest you have a listen to Ray Charles's last album that he cut before he passed away called Genius & Friends. Sort of brings together the best of old & new R&B & features Ray duetting with people like Leela James, John Legend, Mary J Blige, Gladys Knight & the above mentioned Angie Stone. Just a shame Atlantic didn't think it was worthy of a UK release though Having a nightmare with my pc or I would post a couple of tracks in refosoul for you to have a listen to.
