Guest Mark Holmes Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 So which northern record (ancient or modern) do you think has the best Horn Section, full on everything but the kitchen sink kind of Horn Section. If you can attach a soundfile or refosoul link go ahead. I think The Charisma Band - Ain't nothing like your love, is way up there (and the strings are excellent as well)
Ted Massey Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Executive 4 good think going - middle and end bst of the lot IMO
ImberBoy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Footnote, to me sen: As soon as I get sick and tired of oldies, hearing the same old fookin records, I get a blast of some thing like Jerry Cook's version of : I hurt on the other side" and it makes me want to smother my self in oldies and beautifully suffocate in that tremendous energy and passion that is soul! It's a great day today, St George's day, I am a proud Englishman, the sun is shining and our lass fancied a shag before going to work, which is nice.
Guest Matt Male Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Bobby Bland - Honey Child has amazing blasting horns.
Guest proudlove Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Play that fooker as loud as you can! Good shout, Steve

So going by this statement you had bit of a horn section yourself this morning?
Guest in town Mikey Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Maurice Williams - Being without you, has a great break. Little Ritchie - Just Another Heartache overall for me though.
Guest wigantojapan Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Maurice Williams - Being without you, has a great break. Little Ritchie - Just Another Heartache overall for me though. little ritchie how about saxie russell

shuggie61 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I'm a fan of slightly rubbish horn playing. Sometimes just behind the beat or out of unison. A particular record springs to mind - "Girl Watcher" by The O'Kaysions.
Guest imcomunhome Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Curtis Mayfield takes some beatin' ... Move on up towards your destination, though you may find, from time to time, complications ... (Give it to me horns)
Mark S Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I'm a fan of slightly rubbish horn playing. Sometimes just behind the beat or out of unison. A particular record springs to mind - "Girl Watcher" by The O'Kaysions. A good shout not rubbish subtle and slightly muted maybe . For me Thumb a ride and that sax break never fails to hit the spot .
ImberBoy Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Dean Parrish - Determination Lets go mental!!!!!

Guest nomad Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 How about The Majestics .....god I love that so much it hurts. Nomad
Jem Britttin Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Greater Experience "don't forget to remember" Apart from the horns being out of tune ....great record though
Liamgp Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Having just listened to it two minutes ago, I've decided it's 'Who you gonna love' by The Accents. Mind you, before that it was 'Look Away' by Garnet Mimms which has a sublime latin-style horn section. What'll it be in the next five minutes? (If my boss catches me with headphones on, the sack probably)
grant Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Executive 4 good think going - middle and end bst of the lot IMO
Suzannek Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Liz Verdi - You Let Him Get Away With if I think the sound of French Horns! Ooh I love horny records Suz x
Richard Bayley Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 So many of Dave Hamilton's productions seem to feature such crisp, loud horns - I guess Black Detroit must have had a hell of a lot of good school marching bands in the 60's! Three examples :- Little Ann - What Can I Do Tobi Lark - Challenge My Love Dotty & Millie - Talkin' Bout My Baby
shuggie61 Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 "A good shout not rubbish subtle and slightly muted maybe". Sorry Mark S but there's nothing subtle and slightly muted about "Girl Watcher". The horn section sound like a bunch of er, horny drunks. Have you heard the original "Boy Watcher" by Ginger Thompson? The horns play the same parts straight and timidly and it's not half as much fun. In my opinion...
Soul Shrews Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 (edited) Was playing Margie Joseph "One More Chance" earlier ................made me think of this thread Cheers Paul Edited April 25, 2009 by soul shrews

Jaco Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I've always liked (for some reason) the horns on Nicky C and the Chateaux - "Those good times", duff notes and all.
Dr Good Soul Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 How about FREDDIE SCOTT-----I'LL BE GONE Soz can't do sound clips Steve
Guest hatman Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Appreciations - Its better to cry always does it for me
Guest mel brat Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) ...our lass fancied a shag before going to work, which is nice. OMG. Too much info... too much info... Have to agree about Jerry Cook though. Stupendous, tremendous, searing, incendiary super SOUL music! re, Horn blasts n' brass, what about the fabulous intro to Rufus Wood's "Before 2001"? - or "So Is The Sun"? Loud and bountiful! Edited April 28, 2009 by mel brat
Guest mel brat Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) So going by this statement you had bit of a horn section yourself this morning? Sounds a bit nasty to me! - Bit like a sex change op... Edited April 28, 2009 by mel brat
Guest Eridu Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Carol Jones- Don't Destroy Me RAW Ghetto Brass Maybe not the best, but gritty, oh yes.
Kev Moore Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Carol Jones- Don't Destroy Me RAW Ghetto Brass Maybe not the best, but gritty, oh yes. On the same label Milton Harris 'You Should Have Told Me' I love it when the trumpet player hits the duff notes. Makes the record for me. Kev
Guest JJMMWGDuPree Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Tower of Power. Any track you like, the horns're gonna be better than any other horn section you've heard.
