Guest in town Mikey Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 (edited) Wrong....it has to be Cheltenham and Gloucester!! I was going to say Stroud as most per head. Gloucestershire is the Northern Soul equivalent to London's have and have nots. In London 2 streets can see a world of difference between the well off, and the not so well off. Its quite amazing travelling on busses outside of the West End, and seeing quite how different areas can be. In Gloucestershire there is as strong a soul community as anywhere I'd wager. But while I grew up in a small town called Dursley, where there is a strong Northern Soul, and after that mod or scooterist tradition (Dave T will go back to the greasers and skins but thats WAAAAAAYYY before my time ). In fact most people know Paddy Smith patches on the rallys. Dursley Scooter Club boy. Yet the closest towns to us, Berkely and Wooton have or had few if any soul fans that I know of. There was a guy from Wooton...Shuey?? was it? (I did hear before Chink Pearce got into punk he was a soul boy? Maybe he is the guy who sold my dad Dickie Wonder on Golden Triangle, and Ronnie Forte - Whisky Talking for a £1 the pair) But apart from that very few. Yet in Dursley, back in the late 70s early 80s, I could probably name 80-100 regulars at soul nights and to a lesser degree niters. Edit. Webby, I cant believe the Exeter guys on here havent jumped on your first post either. I think as a pennance you should get yourself down there sir. Edited May 1, 2009 by in town Mikey
Theresa Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 most-a northern working class area e.g manchester "come ere while i shave your fukin ed" least-a southern middle class are e.g home counties "the bucket residence lady of the house speaking" I REST MY CASE AR KID Nah, 7% in my posh Surrey village are northern soulies, so that can't be right. Over in Croydon there are a surprising number of soulies, though it makes Shameless look like Surbiton in some parts of it, so that might explain it. Last time I looked Bexhill on Sea had no soul, but I'm fully prepared to be shouted down by the Zimmer frame contingent Hyacinth x
barney Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Wrong....it has to be Cheltenham and Gloucester!! int that a fookin building society
barney Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 have just spent the week in liverpool its a northern soul desert brill if you like the beatles hard to understand really as the heartland of northern soul imho is centered along the m62 corridor and with 1 or 2 notable exceptions the rest of the country just dont get it liverpool you would have thought would be a typical n/soul town somebody prove me wrong ,am back there next week please
